Season Two Review
Personally, I'm another one in the camp that preferred this season over the first - mostly because I prefer mysteries and this had more of that than the first.
Detective Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman) fresh from the publicity surrounding the season one case is asked to consult on a case by Heather Novak (Natalie Paul) daughter of his childhood friend and police officer in the Pacific North West town where Ambrose grew up. The case involves Julian Walker (Elisha Henig) a 12 year old boy who appears to have inexplicably poisoned his parents at a motel on their way to Niagara Falls. The case brings the police into contact with a local commune, which have in the past had a reputation for unconventional therapy sessions. The case, and the commune, provide obstacles to the investigation throughout, but they may force Harry to the childhood trauma that still haunts him.
Again, I think perhaps I preferred this season over the first because it fell into more of the conventions of the genre than that last one did. Harry felt more like a Detective this time, and less like a man who intuitively knows what the right answer is and goes for it. Reveals and plot twists run through the whole season, and not just saved up for one at the end. Not every twist is particularly inspired though, for example, the one from the finale is telegraphed way too early in the season.
I think another reason this season has the edge is that, although Jessica Biel was excellent in the first season, Carrie Coon is another level to play off both Pullman and alongside Henig. The way her performance hides her characters motivations and thoughts, keeping you guessing that she might be an evil mastermind whilst also engendering sympathy for her and fear for her relationship with Julian is masterfully done.
I like the character of Harry Ambrose, and would watch a third season.
