30 for 30: The Last Days of Knight (2018)
**** (out of 4)
Here's yet another wonderful entry in ESPN's 30 for 30 series with this one here being directed and narrated by Robert Abbott. Abbott was the CNN reporter who broke the story about why certain players were leaving Indiana University including Neil Reed. It would turn out that Reed and Knight had a physical altercation that would lead to the downfall of the legendary coach.
As an avid sports fan it's always great to see a new episode of this series. It's even better when you remember the events that the documentary is cover as you can bring your own prospective into it. I've always said that Knight was my favorite basketball coach and I still remember the anger that I felt when he was fired from Indiana. As shown in the film, there was a major outrage and I was right there with them. This documentary shows how Reed pretty much became a victim twice.
This was an exceptionally good documentary that does a fantastic job at explaining why Knight is one of the greatest coaches in the history of the sport but it also does a great job at explaining what happened during the final months at Indiana. The documentary doesn't feature too many interviews and I'm curious if that's because people simply don't want to speak on the subject or if Knight still holds enough power to where people don't want to cross him.
I do wish that there had been more interviews but it's understandable why there isn't. With that being said, the story didn't end when Knight was fired and the film turns rather depressing when we see and hear what happened to Reed. I won't spoil anything here for those who don't know the story but looking back at my own reactions to the story, I can't help but feel really bad and I'm sure others who were attacking him and threatening him will feel even worse.
