The new-model Fox network is loading up on 10 new scripted series for the 2019-20 season, most of which will be held for midseason as the network adjusts to its heightened focus on live sports.
Fox’s volume of new scripted series has doubled from the 2018-19 season, a clear statement from the network that it aims to remain a player in traditional primetime comedies and drama. But as promised, the network’s fall and winter lineup is also heavy on live sports, from “Thursday Night Football” to the WWE’s “Smackdown Live” taking over Fridays.
“We wanted to let the creative community know that Fox is not only open for business but we feel like we’re stronger than ever,” said Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier in outlining the 2019-20 schedule to reporters. Fox is set to formally present its new primetime lineup to advertisers today at New York’s Beacon Theater at 4 p.

Fox has greenlit a second installment of “9-1-1” starring Rob Lowe, Variety has learned.
The new entry in the budding franchise is titled “9-1-1: Lone Star.” It follows a sophisticated New York cop (Lowe) who, along with his son, re-locates to Austin, Texas, and must try to balance saving those who are at their most vulnerable with solving the problems in his own life.
Sources say Lowe stands to make more than $200,000 per episode for his role on the show, which is slated to premiere during the 2019-2020 season. The series hails from “9-1-1” co-creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear.
“The beauty of having a hit drama like ‘9-1-1’ from the genius minds of Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear is it allows you to explore thrilling stories as told through an array of distinctive characters,” said Michael Thorn, president of entertainment...

Exclusive: One of the series regular roles Tate Taylor’s drama Filthy Rich, which was picked up to series by Fox last night, has been recast. The part was played in the pilot by David Denman.
According to sources, the producers are going to the original vision for the character which had been altered when Denman was cast.
Recastings are unfortunate but inevitable byproduct of the networks’ pilot season model when 70+ pilots are being cast simultaneously, racing against a deadline while competing for talent with the other broadcasters as well as cable and streaming networks. So far this upfront, there have been recastings on four newly picked up series
The soapy Filthy Rich, which is being eyed as a companion for hip-hop family drama Empire, hails from The Help writer-director Taylor, Imagine Television and 20th Century Fox TV, with Kim Cattrall starring and producing.
It is a southern Gothic family drama in which wealth, power and religion collide – with outrageously soapy results. When the patriarch of a mega-rich Southern family, famed for creating a wildly successful Christian television network, dies in a plane crash, his wife and family are stunned to learn that he fathered three illegitimate children, all of whom are written into his will, threatening their family name and fortune.
The role, which will be recast, is Reverend Paul Luke Thomas, the beloved, popular, influential and ambitious minister at the Sunshine Network.
Aubrey Dollar, Corey Cott, Benjamin Aguilar, Mark L. Young, Melia Kreiling, Steve Harris and Olivia Macklin also star.
Outcast alum Denman will next be seen starring opposite Elizabeth Banks in Sony feature Brightburn.

The New Fox is piling on the drama.
The broadcaster has issued its fifth order for a drama series, this time for “Filthy Rich,” a southern Gothic family drama which hails from “Girl on the Train” and “The Help” director Tate Taylor.
It’s understood that Fox had been keen to pick up the project earlier this week, however, Taylor’s schedule proved a stumbling block. The director is due to shoot a movie this summer which would have prevented him from overseeing the writers room.
The new one-hour drama centers around the aftermath of a plane crash which kills the patriarch of a mega-rich Southern family, famed for creating a wildly successful Christian television network. After his death, his wife and family are stunned to learn that he fathered three illegitimate children, all of whom are written into his will, threatening their family name and fortune.

Fox has ordered its fifth drama series for the 2019-20 season. The network has picked up Filthy Rich, a soapy drama from The Help writer-director Tate Taylor, Imagine Television and 20th Century Fox TV, with Kim Cattrall to star and produce.
Filthy Rich, which is being eyed as a companion for hip-hop family drama Empire, was one of five Fox drama pilots which generated strong buzz consistently throughout the pilot process. The other four, Prodigal Son, NeXt, Deputy and Untitled Annie Wiseman/Jason Katims, were picked up to series on Thursday.
As we reported at the time, the reason Filthy Rich, which co-stars Gerald McRaney, was not picked up to series with its peers was that details were still being worked out. They had to do with writer/director/exec producer’s Taylor availability as his film schedule may not allow for the series to be ready for fall.

Fox today made the bulk of its new series pickups, ordering four dramas — Prodigal Son, starring Tom Payne and Michael Sheen; neXt, starring John Slattery police drama Deputy, headlined by Stephen Dorff; the Annie Weisman/Jason Katims sister drama; based on an Australian format — and comedy Outmatched (fka Geniuses).
That leaves two more drama pilots and three comedy ones. While I hear Fox is yet to give official passes, most of the remaining pilots are not going forward at the network.
In best shape is soapy family drama Filthy Rich, headlined by Kim Cattrall, which is considered a lock as a possible companion to Empire, with details currently being worked out. Now standing as its own entity, Fox can do what it pleases when it comes to new series pickups.
Four new dramas, a live-action comedy, and an animated comedy currently please Fox. Let's take a looks at the dramas!
A serial killer drama titled Prodigal Son, an AI drama called Next, a police drama titled Deputy, and an adaptation of Australian drama Sisters have all gotten series orders.
Considered a good companion piece to the recently renewed Empire, sudser Filthy Rich starring Kim Cattrall is still in contention and deals are underway.
Deptuty comes from Will Beall and eOne and Fox Entertainment studios. Deputy stars Stephen Dorff and is a modern cop drama that blends the spirit of a classic Western with a modern-day attitude and gritty authenticity.

Fox just made its first new series pickups, ordering four of its six drama pilots to series. That includes cop/serial killer drama Prodigal Son, starring Tom Payne and Michael Sheen; John Slattery’s AI drama neXt; police drama Deputy, headlined by Stephen Dorff; and the Annie Weisman/Jason Katims sister drama; based on an Australian format.
The drama competition at Fox had been fierce virtually from the start with five of the six pilots emerging as solid contenders. The fifth in the group — soapy family drama Filthy Rich, headlined by Kim Cattrall, which is considered a suitable companion to Empire — remains in contention with deals being worked out.
The mass pickup of new drama series at Fox, which only ordered two new hourlong shows last year, is not good news for the network’s bubble dramas, Lethal Weapon, The Passage and Star.
Fox Orders Live-Action Comedy Series ‘Outmatched’ and Animated ‘The Great North’
I hear Fox’s sixth drama pilot, Tom Kapinos’ Lovestruck, is not going forward at the network. But the show, whose first season takes place over the course of single night at a wedding, reportedly had tested well and has been well received within 20th Century Fox TV, which is expected to shop it elsewhere, similarly to its 2018 Fox pilot Mixtape, which was picked up to series by Netflix.
Of the newly picked-up Fox dramas, one, neXt (plus Filthy Rich), comes from Fox’s former corporate sibling 20th Century Fox TV. The others come from other studios, Warner Bros. TV (Prodigal Son), Universal TV (Weisman/Katims) and eOne (Deputy), underlining the now-independent network’s commitment to work with all suppliers. All are co-productions with Fox Entertainment. The Fox drama lineup also includes top acting talent with Sheen, Slattery and Dorff.
The pickup of Prodigal Son makes it 3-for-3 for Berlanti Prods., with all three of the company’s broadcast pilots this season going to series, including the CW’s Batwoman and Katy Keene.
Prodigal Son passed one of the biggest tests for a pilot – recasting its lead, with Payne replacing originally cast Finn Jones after the pilot read. Payne and Sheen, who plays his father, proved a formidable duo, drawing praise for their acting — especially Sheen who has a showcase role as a notorious serial killer.
2019 Fox Pilots and Series Orders
Police drama Deputy has been praised for Dorff’s acting and the directing work of Bright helmer David Ayer. eOne secured Dorff in what might be the biggest talent deal so far this broadcast pilot season. Dorff will reportedly be paid north of $200,000 an episode. If the show goes to a second season, Dorff would become an executive producer. In conjunction with his casting in Deputy, Dorff made a feature script development deal with eOne to develop and star in a movie, which would be produced by Ayer and Chris Long’s Cedar Park Entertainment.
The four dramas join two comedies picked up to series today by Fox, Outmatched (fka Geniuses) and animated half-hour The Great North. and previously ordered straight-to-series animated comedies Bless the Harts and Duncanville.

With the network screenings wrapping up, we are heading into the final stage of pilot season when network executives take the pilots that had screened the best/tested the highest and see which of them fit into their schedules for next season. With ABC’s order Thursday of Black-ish‘s young Rainbow-centered prequel Mixed-ish kicking off the new series pickups, here is our final pilot buzz list.
The field of leading ABC drama contenders has narrowed down a bit. Staying strong after the screenings are early standouts Pi drama Stumptown starring Cobie Smulders, the soapy, John Mayer song-inspired Heart of Life, the new NYPD Blue and the untitled Hank Steinberg /50 Cent legal drama. NY Undercover also has supporters; I hear its fate might be tied to that of bubble drama The Rookie as ABC is unlikely to go for three cop dramas in these two and NYPD Blue. I...

With the WGA-Ata war fully raging, diversity discussions at the forefront of the industry and numerous new rivals entering the original-content game, there is arguably more pressure than ever on the broadcast networks to make the right call when it comes to pilot pickups.
Here’s what Variety’s insiders are saying about this season’s offerings.
ABC
On the comedy front, three female-led pilots look to charge ahead at ABC.
An untitled Hannah Simone project has enjoyed support within ABC from the start. Simone’s “Greatest American Hero” pilot at ABC last year was ultimately passed over, but she still has many supporters at the network.
Another hot prospect comes from writer Jessica Gao, fresh off an Emmy win for her work on “Rick and Morty.” Hopes for the untitled pilot are bolstered not only by Gao’s recent success but also by Brian Grazer serving as exec producer.

It’s late April. Normally at this time TV business’ attention is focused almost squarely on the broadcast pilot season as it is heading into its final stages — network pilot screenings followed by new series pickups. But this is not a normal time. With the WGA-Ata standoff completely dominating the Hollywood conversation following the mass firing of agents by writers, it has been hard for anyone to focus on pilot season. Here is what I hear is hot at the networks. Keep in mind that the information is still incomplete as not all pilots have been delivered to the networks. We will have a fuller picture at the end of next week when most of the pilots will have screened.

It’s April, and Deadline is launching its annual Pilot Panic feature where we track buzz on the broadcast pilots as they go through production and and testing. We are late out of the gate this year, but that’s understandable — it’s been an extraordinary time of upheaval in the business, with 13,000 writers on Friday told by the WGA to fire their agents after the guild and the Ata could not reach a new franchise agreement.
The 2019 broadcast pilot season has been completely overshadowed by the WGA-ata battle. Still, handicapping broadcast pilots is a Deadline tradition, so let’s get to it. As usual, the first story is very sketchy and preliminary as many pilots are still in production and very few have been delivered. Here is a list of some pilots that are getting strong early buzz based on a combination of auspices, script, table read, taping or dailies.

Imagine Television is developing “Mindscaping,” a 24-episode science fiction series written by Oscar Yang. The series is the first Chinese-language series developed by Imagine Television, part of Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Entertainment group, for a Chinese audience.
The show is pitched as an original sci-fi action series, which sees a man unwittingly brought into the city’s dark underbelly after a friend is wrongly accused of a crime. He uncovers a crime syndicate that uses mind-control to amass its power.
Endeavor China is co-financing the project with Imagine Television Studios, and will be handling sales. The deal was announced in Hong Kong at the FilMart film and TV rights market.
Imagine chairmen Grazer and Howard and Imagine Television chairman Francie Calfo are set as executive producers. Janice Chua (“Crazy Rich Asians”) will oversee the project for Imagine. Trey Callaway and veteran television producer Lillah McCarthy serve as story consultants.

Written by Beall and directed by Ayer, Deputy centers on Deputy Bill Hollister (Dorff), a career lawman who’s very comfortable kicking down doors and utterly lost in a staff meeting. But when the L.A. County sheriff drops dead, Bill becomes acting sheriff, in charge of 10,000 sworn deputies policing a modern Wild West.
Goines will play Deputy Rachel Quinn. Practical, meticulous and a workaholic, this clever detective pieces together details overlooked by others, and does so quickly.
Kaur is Deputy Breanna Bishop. Smartly dressed and sarcastic, this “quietly badass” driver is in charge of newly appointed Sheriff Hollister’s security detail.
