A fitting send-off to one of the greats
jovan-sumarac9513 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The eponymous Veep finale did not disappoint! It was a perfect balance of laugh out loud comedy and very dark satire which the show has done wonderfully over the years. It was certainly a love letter to the long term fans of the show and there were hilarious references to catch if you're one of them. I liked how they satisfyingly wrapped up many of the storylines not just from this season, but ones that were started earlier as well. One of Veep's greatest strengths was always it's great cast and they've done a fantastic job in this last hour. Chlumsky was unnerving as Amy, Laurie hysterical as Tom James, and Kevin Dunn just pitch-perfect as the jaded, wounded, alcoholic Ben. There were also wonderful moments for Gary Cole as Kent decided to eff the numbers and Clea Duvall's Marjorie finally lost it with Selina. But some of the best acting came from the people in perhaps the central relationship on this show. Tony Hale was just terrific as Gary, especially when he realizes what Selina was going to do to him in order to become POTUS. He's also subtle, but breaks your heart in the end, when he finally brings Selina the Dubonnet. But this was always the Julia Louis-Dreyfus show, and boy she did not disappoint. Whether throwing acid insults at Jonah or Amy, throwing chairs in her office or genuinely crying at Ben's bed in hospital she nails every scene. But the best moments come towards the end, when she tries and fails to give Gary heads up about the FBI. She tries to tell him but she just can't, and that's maybe the only time we see anything like sorrow and remorse for the things she's done. So she gives him a hug and off she goes, to be the politician and accept the nomination. It's been talked about a lot, but Dreyfus truly is phenomenal in what is surely the role of a lifetime. Can't wait for that final Emmy. The Gary storyline is one that is the most horribly satisfying. After ruining the last remains of a relationship with her daughter & her family, Selina truly hits rock bottom when she sacrifices Gary and she knows that. Fittingly, it's only then that she gets what she wanted. The last thing I have to add is that I liked the little references at the end (the level of incompetence...), the return of Sue was very classy and that Tom Hanks joke was perfect for the end and totally in Veep spirit. It is truly one of the greatest comedies ever to air and I will miss it terribly.

Veep's Greatest Episode
CulvertonSmith13 May 2019
Wow, that was honestly one of the best series finales I've ever seen. This episode twisted and turned in ways that I didn't expect, yet made so much sense. The way this story closes left me with a couple of moments that really punched me in the gut. While there is good comedy to be found in this one, this episode went darker than Veep has gone before and was pulled off spectacularly.

One of the greatest endings I've ever seen
sellersjv17 May 2019
Veep's final episode is truly a great feat of writing, directing and acting. The show gave us an almost perfect ending, that encapsulated all the things I loved about the show and yet managed to surprise me. Because Veep showed us in its last moments it had been a tragedy all along, and we've just been laughing about it.

A Masterclass in Comedy Finales
jameym63013 May 2019
Selina Meyer at her best (worst) in the series finale just feels right. Every moment was well-crafted and perfectly performed. This is how you wrap up a genius comedy the right way!

Couldn't have asked for a better bittersweet end

If I have to thank HBO for a great show it's not GOT, it's not Westworld and it's not Six feet Under.... It's the Veep. I'm gonna say it, Veep finale topped Seinfeld finale for me and that's coming from someone whose been an addict to Seinfeld. Thankyou everyone for making this show. This finale was as good as TV is ever going to get near a perfect score.

WOW An amazing end
dodds-j16 May 2019
The finale of this amazing series was so much more than I could've ever asked for. By far the funniest episode of the entire series. So many stories coming together at the end brilliantly. Selina's narcissism was more outraged and hilarious than ever. All sitcoms should look to this show for inspiration. In my opinion this is the greatest finale of any show ever.

A good and solid finale but tone not my cup of tea
grayner-213 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Yes, I get it. This show was pretty much about awful people and the people who try to be decent (like Catherine) usually lose out. I get that this is an unfliching look at the inner workings of politics, much of which is absolutely true. I get that current political realities have shaped the tone and intensity of the show. Most of all, I understand Selena Myer is a horrible person and, given the chance, her awfulness could come fully to fruition.

Having said all of this, I freakly found the tone of the final episode to be so dark and cynical that I found it more disturbing than funny. Yes, Selena cheats literally everyone, puts idiot Jonah a hear beat away from the presidency, even screws over her own daughter and sells out on her one accomplishment - freeing Tibet - all to have power. But the show always had a bit of light and optimism about it - that somehow things would be ok despite the efforts of the idiots and the ruthless. Here, the picture painted is pretty bleak about the future. However, it does seem that 5 presidential terms later, the good (or better) people seem to have won - Kemi serves 2 terms, Richard Splett, perhaps not the smartest but with principles, solves the Middle East crisis. Selena gets the punishments she so justly deserves - a presidency devoid of substance because she has sold her soul and a death and presidency that are a footnote in history, mainly for the horrible things she did.

Maybe it's just me but it seemed that the last episode of Veep became like a non-violent Breaking Bad. That's not to say it wasn't good or the acting wasn't great but to me it just left a bitter taste in my mouth. I'm not naive to have expected a happy ending and everyone suddenly becoming super nice but maybe a bright moment or two? It just ended so dark.

Fitting finale

Warning: Spoilers
I almost joined Ben in the hospital from laughing so much.

You know they took the swearing, belittling, and berating over the top when the CC didn't even translate the whole sentence. Because it was too much.

A finale all others should strive to be
adam_mortimer1415 May 2019
This had it all, everything the series has been built to be, but amplified. It made me laugh and feel more than the series has so far. It's a shame not all shows can end on such a high. At least one ending HBO show will be remembered fondly this summer!

Thank you Veep.

Simply beautiful.

At least it's a real end.
ecopolst13 May 2019
The final epsidoe of Veep is solid work. Loose threads are gathered, the fates of all involved are resolved and its funny at times. The episode feels a bit rushed but that goes for the whole final season. Lots of anecdotes connect events in this episodes to earlier Veep episodes but you have to be a fan with a good memory to catch them. Refreshingly current writing so typical throughout all episodes of the final season is toned down. Focus instead seems to be on finality and tying it all together.

Dreyfus does a good acting job and among the other actors nobody stands out as worthless. It's not really a very funny episode but it serves its purpose. This series is now history. It's been fun!

Horrible final episode. Just clarified what a cow Selina really was.
swainra-180-46273227 May 2019
I always thought Selina would do anything to get one over her rivals but her treatment of Gary in this final episode was just beyond appalling. Her crocodile tears as she goes on stage do not have any redeeming value for me. I liked the series but the finale just made me dislike the entire thing to be honest.

A Comedy Finale For The Ages
Jeremy_Urquhart15 May 2019
It's hard to imagine Veep going out much better than this. Everybody brought their A-game, there was a new joke seemingly every 15 seconds or less, there was a surprising amount of poignancy to certain moments, and the legendary Julia Louis-Dreyfuss all but cemented her 7th consecutive Emmy in an amazing performance.

Finales for any show are difficult, but for TV comedies I feel it's even more so. There are shows I've loved and laughed at for years, but struggle to ultimately remember how they ended. Then there are decent, satisfying finales, like for The Office (US) and Parks And Rec, that were perhaps a little too clean and potentially overly sentimental. Scrubs had a fantastic finale... that was ruined when the show came back for a 9th, low-quality, disappointing final season.

But Veep, in its final episode, gives you everything you'd want and then some. I hadn't really felt that its 7th season came across as a climactic one until this episode, which really tied everything together beautifully. I know I'm keeping the details vague, but it's really for the best to go into Veep's final episode knowing as little as possible, both in regards to its best jokes and its overall plot.

I'll miss this show immensely but I look forward to rewatching it one day and once more laughing at horrible people saying and doing horrible things to each other but also being so very funny in the process.

Brilliant, jaw dropping and hilarious!
dwbell14 May 2019
What a brilliant way for this show to end. Armando Iannucci has written one of the best series endings ever, with the story being tied up in an unexpected but entirely logical way. Julia Louis-Dreyfus' performance is a career-best. The rest of the cast are superb all around. Perfect.

Two things I would have changed:
moorejw-524155 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
1. I would have given Marjorie an earth-shattering, heart-breaking, sailor-mouthed, devastatingly brilliant monologue that makes even Selina speechless when she and Catherine confront her for the same-sex marriage bill. NOT ONLY would this have perfectly balanced the dynamic between both her and Selina, it would have given a cheeky reference to the fact that Catherine's life partner has some more characteristics of her own mother, (besides looking a lot like her),

2. I would have found a way for the entire nomination event to go COLOSSALLY wrong and have Richard somehow become the President instead of Selina. I think it would have been one of the most hilariously ironic ways to end it, and it would have made sense with how fast he went up in his career, which was basically being promoted every few days to the next highest position just by being Richard.

Other than that, I am constantly astounded at the perfection of writing in this show. All of these Emmies are well-deserved. What an excellent way to tie up this masterpiece.

Veep - 707
bobcobb30116 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
And that is a wrap on a Top 10 All-Time sitcom.

They resolved things with the nomination and run too quickly though. I wish we saw the run to the White House and not just have her immediately win.

It was funny, it was depressing, but it was a finale we will probably remember. That's the sign of a good one.

To the bitter end . . .
Mr-Fusion20 April 2020
This whole season has had a go-for-broke vibe with every supporting and background character making a last-minute appearance. I've nothing wrong with that because it makes this feel like the final sendoff that if it. Truth be told, I was desperately hoping for more Peter MacNicol and I was not disappointed.

Selina completes her arc from cursed also-ran to somewhat of a supervillain in her quest for the oval office. I didn't think this show could actually get anymore acidic in its final season, but I was proven wrong many times over. And yet, there's an optimistic note that the writers choose to end on.

This is one hell of a finish.

And There's Nothing Anyone Can Do to Stop Me
matthewjmiles16 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Well, it has all come to a conclusive end, the story is wrapped up, the characters and subplots have been addressed and resolved in turn - we even get to see all the leads in advanced age prosthetics in the style of 'Six Feet Under'. However, I don't think its the question of whether they provided a satisfying end - they did, I think its whether this entire season was ultimately welcome. Something felt a little off going into the first episode of this season... I don't know what it was exactly, some of the characters started to feel 'flanderized', especially Gary and Kent, who were previously two of my favourite characters. The uncertainty of the future reflects in the story, as I believe was realised in the penultimate season finale, I noted that if Selina was to run again, it would be a decision made with delusion, and everyone to go along with her would be similarly fooling themselves. It's no secret that Selina isn't the best of people, and after everything with her mental state and her losing battle against the progressive facets of the new generation, I was hoping for a positive ending when Selina realises her out of her depth she is and either retires or takes another rejuvenating trip to the 'spa'. Anything otherwise would be a misguided justification for the endless amount of unsavory things that she has done or advocated over her career, and would be a particularly negative ending for the world in which Veep exists and for all those watching who wanted to see Selina get her comeuppance.

While the actual content of the finale was good, most of the jokes were solid and the character interactions made sense, I don't know if I can say the same for this season as a whole. Certainly the earlier episodes had some weak moments, which made me think it was overstaying its welcome a little, and if they were going to go beyond to an eighth season, I would have had major doubts about its potential. They did, to their credit, go all out on the finale, however, with various impressive set-pieces and twists in the tale to shake things up. I'm happy that for Selina to get what she wanted, she had to reach her lowest point yet by reaching out and teaming up with Jonah. Moreover, I think it's kind of anti-climactic for it to be a battle primarily between Selina and Senator Talbot, respectively representing being stuck in the past and embracing the future, and then they have Selina serve just one term and Talbot takes over for years afterwards anyway? Plus they kill her in the flash-forward after the six month increment and we don't see her again at all when they jump again, she's just dead, and we don't even see the fallout of her dealing with another presidency, or how she even felt about herself and her life in the aftermath of her victory. The final moments of Veep are looking back on Selina like she had a lot of memories and actions to be cherished, or that she was even a paragon, but from everything we know of Selina I felt that was a disservice to the tongue-in-cheek approach that Ianucci first conceived for her.

On the whole, I still think Veep is a great show, and I will definitely be including the final season in any future rewatch, but I can't help but wish there had been more consequences for the characters after seeing them all become pretty unlikeable in this last season. However, it was a perfect choice to end the final scene with Mike messing something up.

In my opinion, I was disgusted with the finale. She pretty much did whatever she had to do to get the presidency and not caring who she hurt. Sorry but I wanted to strangle her.
