You can pretty much bet that whenever the Dardenne brothers show up with a new film in Cannes, it will walk away with some sort of prize. That has been the case since 1999 when their first competition film, Rosetta, swooped in at the last minute and won the Palme d’Or and Best Actress. They won a second Palme in 2005 for The Child, the Grand Jury Prize in 2011 for Kid with a Bike, Screenplay in 2008 for Lorna’s Silence and Director in 2019 for Young Ahmed. No matter what the jury, the Dardennes continue to impress, yet none of their films has brought them an Oscar nomination. Their 2011 pic Two Days, One Night did get a surprise Best Actress nomination for Marion Cotillard, but that has been it.

After 14 years at IFC Films, longtime exec Lisa Schwartz is exiting the independent film distributor at the end of the year.
As co-president, Schwartz guided IFC Films’ business strategy, distribution and strategic partnerships. Most recently, she led IFC Films’ foray into streaming by creating and successfully launching the IFC Films Unlimited streaming channel, which is seeing subscriber growth driven by a library of award-winning, acclaimed films from the IFC Films, Sundance Selects and IFC Midnight distribution labels. Those titles include The Trip, Two Days, One Night, 45 Years and The Babadook.
Schwartz was promoted to the role of co-president of IFC Films and Sundance Selects in February 2016 from her role as EVP Distribution, Operations and Business Development for Sundance Selects and IFC Films.

I become invested in the struggles of Sandra in Two Days, One Night in a way I rarely do with other protagonists.
The Dardenne’s unadorned style combined with the rawness of Marion Cotillard’s performance convince me completely of the reality of what’s unfolding, and I monitor Sandra like a friend for whom I am gravely concerned, inspecting every downward glance for hints of an impending crack up. When she teeters on the brink of a deep abyss after the film’s brutal first act, I can intuit that she is probably one more setback away from surrendering to her darkest impulses. The film doesn't need to say so...

With so many folks out there looking for ways to keep themselves entertained at home right now, perhaps this new batch of home media releases might have something to offer you this week. If you missed it in theaters last year, the controversial Black Christmas remake hits both Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday, and Scream Factory has put together a fourth volume in their Universal Horror Collection series, which looks like a must-own for all classic genre fans out there.
Also headed to Blu this week is The Nines, which is one of my favorite underseen films from Ryan Reynolds, as well as Cannibal Apocalypse, featuring John Saxon. We also have Glenn Danzig’s Verotika coming out on Tuesday and if you need something to keep the kiddos busy, Jumanji: The Next Level should do the trick.
Other releases for March 17th include Uncaged, By Day’s End, Witch Hunters,...

Tagline: "You'll Be Dying to Play this Game." 47 Hours is an indie horror movie from director Patrick Johnson (The Crushed). The film focuses on a strange internet game, that is uploaded to two girls' phones. Once downloaded, the game forces the two girls to play a supernatural game. There are no shortage of murderous app' horror movies. But, this latest one has been compared more to "13 Reasons Why" and "Stranger Things," by the filmmakers. Starring Annie Hamilton (Desolate), Allie Marie Evans, Luke Shelton and others, this title has already had its World Premiere earlier this month and Artist View Entertainment will show the film, through a wider release, later this year. The film's early details are hosted here. Producer Andrew Stevens has talked about the film, this year. He introduces the film as "a post millennial, female-driven, psychological thriller with horror elements (B Movie Nation)." Stevens also mentions...
