... it needs tons of work. I wanted to like it as I am a big Run fan, I'm also an 80s rapper and happened to look just like him. they need acting coaches badly, and some more polished writers... given the time to develop it can be a solid Netflix watch, for right now it's good for families with kids who are young enough to not tell when the acting is poor. but as an adult it was more background noise while I looked on my cell phone.

good writing but bad acting

There are much worse things on TV

Stumbled upon this show browsing the myriad of shows available on Netflix last night and am about halfway through the series. Sure it's not laugh out loud funny, it's not terribly clever but the characters are likeable and it is a pleasant watch with the odd giggle moment popping up here and there. Though it is more of an atmospheric show (something inoffensive playing in the background rather than centre focus) I will stick with the series all the way through... I mean after all, there is a LOT of rubbish and Overwhelming multimedia being broadcast into our homes on a consistent basis and it's nice to just relax and watch something that's not overstimulating.
Awful awful acting

I managed to get through a few episodes. The acting is so awful, in particular the mum. It's such a shame as the eldest daughter was pretty good in scream.
This is not cute or funny it's just bad. It reminds me of the to bad to laugh at nick programmes. Could be my age but if your older than 12 just skip it.
Rollercoaster of acting

A mildly good concept executed in the worst way possible.

The show started out as good as it could have but then devolved into a caricature of the worst 70s and 80s black sitcoms.
The father being out of touch was a good place to start, but Joseph Simmons who is the legendary Run of Run DMC is a terrible actor. I'll even by the prodigy daughter (if they had someone who was actually smart write the part) but the rest of it was garbage.
Justine Simmons, who is the real life wife of Reverend Run, since it is "her turn" to go out and work quickly starts channelling a caricature of Jackée Harry's 227 character Sondra.
Bad acting and bad writing happens but when it's the fall of one of my favorite rappers it takes on a deeper sadness.

An OK show that's fun for the family to watch together.

Is it a breakout comedy hit? No. But it does have its moments and is definitely something that a family can sit down and watch together which is it's main target audience. There are by far worse shows on and it's good to have something that is considered for kids but doesn't walk the line with profanity and sexual suggested material. Acting starts off shaky but gets better as the season moves on. Watch and judge for yourself, especially if watching with the fam.
Just bad..

This show is probably the worse show i have ever seen, The show by itself is not really fun to watch and these "jokes" are just a pain in the back and not funny to me i don't recommend watching this show, Netflix.. do better with these types of shows.
Good with potential to get better

I really enjoyed the first season. Justine Simmons' acting was not great, but she is such a genuinely likeable person in real life that it made me root for her to get better with each episode. Rev Run's acting was better than I expected. The children were pros and it showed. I loved that I enjoyed it alone, but I could also watch with the whole family. I hope they give them another season to live up to their full potential.
Great show but needs work

Warning: Spoilers
I enjoy this show because there is no profanity, drug use, and sexual content, which is hard to find in most shows today. It is easy to watch and enjoy. Justine and Run's acting is TERRIBLE. I think they should executively produce behind the scenes and be replaced by two other people who can act. The kids are great. They really make the show. I got teary eyed during the scene when Skyler became candid with the interviewers for the private school she later attended.
Kinda Boring

Binged it this afternoon and now I'm sad that it's over. Great family dynamic! Rev Run and Justine bring the magic that made us love them on their reality show to life in their fictional characters. The kids are all super talented. Can't wait for Season 2
Family Friendly
rachdatsme1 September 2018
The show is very family friendly and fun, meaning at some points, the humor may just come off as shallow -- to a more serious audience I mean. Personally the pilot didn't hook me, but I continued on (because I myself prefer shows below the 30 minute mark) and eventually I found myself having to finish it.
I enjoyed the season, and found myself getting attached to the characters personalities after a few episodes. Audience just needs to be a bit open to some seemingly forced humor and cringe worthy side comments.
Overall, family friendly, nothing raunchy (like most shows or movies that fall under "comedy") and very light. Easy to follow as well.

This show came out perfect timing. I've been craving to watch something just simple and good feeling. Too many intense shows out right now and I just wanted something to relax and still multi-task to. Kinda reminds me of "my wife and kids". Parts are a little cheesey and main set is living room. If you don't like that, just forewarning but all-in-all it's a good family show to relax to.
Great family show

It's a great family show! Which is nice to have these days because so many shows now you can't sit and watch as a family. Ready for the next season to come out! I wish The episodes were longer! We binged the whole season in two days lol! But all in all a wonderful show!
Great Family Show

When a reality show wants to get creative...
atbsigma20 August 2018
I watched the show and called it 'All about the Simmons' because I couldn't separate the reality show personas of Rev Run or Justine from their characters in this series. I saw it as a creative extension of those reality shows, bringing along some young actors and actresses for the ride. And I think that is what makes the series work for me.
Fans of the reality series will recognize the small differences in the Simmons' house. Haven't looked up yet whether or not the series was mostly filmed at the Simmon's estate itself or in recreated versions of that estate.
