Back in 1999, Joshua Leonard made his acting debut in the now-iconic found-footage film “The Blair Witch Project.” In the last 25 years he’s directed five of his own films and starred in dozens of others, but is still fighting to be taken seriously in Hollywood.
At last week’s CinemaCon, Lionsgate and Blumhouse announced the development of a”The Blair Witch Project” reboot. Leonard’s face was on the press release — but in an April 12 social media post, he said he knew nothing about the project.
“This is My face on a press release for a film being made by two major studios — both I’ve worked for, both I respect,” Leonard wrote on Facebook. “The Weird Part is that I didn’t know anything about it until a friend sent me a ‘congrats’ screenshot yesterday. My frustration is compounded b/c I’ve been trying to get @lionsgate to...

Director and cinematographer Steven Soderbergh doesn’t care about the camera. He cares more about the story. And indeed, he shot another successful feature (Presence) on a prosumer camera (Sony a9 III).
Sony Alpha 9 III Soderbergh: Unconventional director and cinematographer
Director and cinematographer Steven Soderbergh loves to be the first to try new cameras even on high-end feature film productions. His early films were primarily filmed on Super 8 and 16 mm film formats. In the middle of his career, he was not afraid to utilize new cameras even in their production phase. For instance, Contagion (2011) which is one of the most-watched movies in the Covid era, was shot on the Red One Mx. Before that, Soderbergh filmed all of The Girlfriend Experience (2009) on a Red One camera, which has retailed for $4000 for that time. Furthermore, Soderbergh filmed the entirety of Unsane (2018) on an iPhone 7 Plus with its 4K digital camera using the app FiLMiC Pro.

'Historical horror' is not a term that's been especially popularized, but it's most effective when describing the delicious combination of historical events and fictional horror. This subgenre has been quietly enjoying a great run during the last decade or so: not only have there been several movies that brilliantly mix detail-heavy period settings with creepy goings-on but there have been a number of TV shows delving into historical horror with much success, such as Showtime's "Penny Dreadful."
Latest on the scene is AMC's "The Terror," a series that so far has been able to vary its period setting, themes, and even tone thanks to being anthologized season to season. After the first season, which was based on author Dan Simmons' novel "The Terror" (hence the series' name), the second season went on to tell an original tale set in and around the Japanese internment camps in America during WWII.

Indie distributor Neon has snapped up Steven Soderbergh’s latest film, the supernatural thriller Presence, at the Sundance Film Festival.
A director who’s long experimented with genres and filmmaking styles, Steven Soderbergh’s latest film, the supernatural thriller Presence, sounds as formally unconventional as his 2018 iPhone-shot thriller, Unsane. It’s shot entirely in one location – a surburban house – and reportedly filmed entirely from the perspective of a ghost stalking an increasingly unsettled family.
It’s an experimental concept that has evidently paid off, with its debut at the Sundance film festival joined by some positive reviews, with even the less glowing ones conceding that it’s an intriguing technical exercise. The aura surrounding the film – no doubt helped by Steven Soderbergh’s reputation – is such that independent production/distribution company Neon has now acquired the film.

Following part one of our 2024 preview, we’re counting down our 50 most-anticipated films of the year.
50. The Actor (Duke Johnson)
Duke Johnson, one half of the directing duo behind Anomalisa, makes his solo directorial (and live-action) debut with The Actor. For being based on the posthumously published novel from Donald E. Westlake, a synopsis points towards an amnesia thriller with André Holland as a New York City actor beaten and stranded in 1950s Ohio. Gemma Chan and Toby Jones co-star. As a state native I’m intrigued how they shot Budapest for small-town Ohio––the two don’t exactly scream perfect matches, but I won’t doubt the movie magic before I see it. Anomalisa was a wholly original stop-motion feature; we’re intrigued how Johnson continues that creativity in the live-action realm. – Caleb H.

After helping to pioneer Italy’s budding giallo genre throughout the 1970s with influential titles like The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, The Cat o’ Nine Tails, Four Flies on Grey Velvet, and Deep Red, Dario Argento took a brief sabbatical from the lurid thrillers to explore supernatural elements in Suspiria and Inferno. When the latter failed at the box office, he made a triumphant return to gialli in 1982 with Tenebrae (sometimes spelled Tenebre; originally released in the US as Unsane).
While his American contemporaries were trying to come up with inventive instruments of death to propel slasher films, Argento was designing more lavish ways to film his kill scenes. Suspiria remains his crowning achievement, but Tenebrae finds the filmmaker bringing his honed visual panache to the giallo sandbox in which he made a name for himself. The result stands not only as one of Argento’s strongest efforts but also a landmark giallo work.

The extremely successful John Wick universe is expanding! Brand-new TV prequel series The Continental lands on Peacock in the US and Prime Video in the UK this September with a mission to take the world of John Wick beyond the ultra-violent adventures of Mr. Wick himself, but they’ll still need guns – lots of guns.
Unfortunately, John Wick star Keanu Reeves does not appear in The Continental, but there are lots of new and familiar characters checking into both the notorious New York hotel and the intricate lore of the franchise in this big budget streaming TV series. If you need to know more about those characters and the actors behind the roles, we’re here to help.

Heist movies are the best movies. This is an irrefutable fact. Stories about a group of people coming together and devising a plan to steal money, jewels, art, or anything of value from a secure location give you everything you could want. They're about interpersonal relationships, people being good at their jobs, sticking it to the powerful, and they're always filled with delightful complications and twists. In terms of big screen entertainments, they truly are the ideal genre, and no one is better at making them than Steven Soderbergh.
Of course, the crowning jewel of his heist oeuvre is the "Ocean's" trilogy, a star-studded triptych of top-shelf Hollywood entertainment that I could watch at any time. I even rewatched "Ocean's Eleven" two days before I even knew I would be writing this. Those films don't make up the entirety of the heist section of his filmography, though. He came back...

"I can't do it alone, I need you!" Paramount Movies + MGM have debuted an official trailer for an indie dark comedy / survival thriller titled Unseen, not to be confused with Steven Soderbergh's psychological thriller Unsane. This is launching directly on VOD for streaming at home in March. Here's the extra wild pitch for this movie: two women form an unlikely connection when Sam, a gas station clerk, receives a misdialed call from Emily, who is running from her murderous ex-boyfriend in the woods. Having lost her glasses in her escape, Emily must rely on Sam’s eyes using the video call and camera in order to survive and make it home. Unseen stars Midori Francis, Jolene Purdy, Missi Pyle, and Michael Patrick Lane, along with a few others. This is an interesting concept that seems especially fake as a movie. I prefer the radical poster (also seen below) more than the trailer,...

The trio joins an ensemble led by Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum, which also includes the previously announced Jim Rash, Ray Romano, Anna Garcia, Donald Elise Watkins and Noah Robbins.

We’ve ranked final girls and villainesses. We’ve remembered Fay Wray and honored Jamie Lee Curtis. We’ve ruminated on director Mary Lambert’s “Pet Sematary,” celebrated star Jess Weixler kicking the hell out of “Teeth,” and considered the limitations imposed by so-called sanity in “Carrie,” “Unsane,” and more psychological fright fests.
We’ve waxed poetic about our favorite horror movies and pestered genre goddesses of all kinds to do same with Kristen Connolly (“The Cabin in the Woods”), Leigh Janiak (“Fear Street”), Thora Birch (“Hocus Pocus”), Barbara Crampton (“Re-Animator”), Milly Shapiro (“Hereditary”), Essie Davis (“The Babadook”), and more weighing in. Heck, Cassandra Peterson — yes, the Elvira — even sat us down for a whole conversation picking apart what sets her Halloween-loving heart aflutter, in an interview that also explores the LGBTQ underpinnings of countless scary movies.

“House of Psychotic Women” levitates above the niche sub-genre of autobiography through cinema. Layers of knowledge, confession, and imagination mingle to produce a narrative that invites re-reading and re-interpretation. On one level, it is a memoir of personal trauma expressed through horror heroines everywhere from classic horror to giallo to exploitation to more arthouse fare like Robert Altman’s “Images.” Yet author Kier-La Janisse’s book — intriguingly subtitled “An Autobiographical Topography of Female Neurosis in Horror and Exploitation Films” — reaches beyond both autobiography and cinema to conjure a space where collective female neurosis is a sane response to insane circumstances.
First published in 2012, the book has now been reissued for its tenth anniversary, complete with an updated list of films the Canadian author, critic, and horror expert examines. All of them, of course, about “psychotic women.” “I privileged films that were not about psycho-killer women, I privileged films that were...

“Nope.” That’s the maddening morsel of a clue writer-director Jordan Peele gave audiences before unleashing his third horror flick into theaters on July 22: “Nope.”
Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun, Brandon Perea, and Michael Wincott star in this science fiction horror outing set against the legacies of horse ranchers in Hollywood (we think). Although Peele’s latest project has been somewhat vague in its rollout, he’s not the first horror auteur to make their monosyllabic mark with a title that’s doggedly vexing and slyly sinister. Dating back to the earliest days of the movies, films such as “Noseferatu,” “Dracula,” “Freaks,” “Maniac,” “Bedlam,” “Godzilla,” “Rodan,” and more have kept things scary and succinct with titles that practically demand audiences venture into theaters to uncover the terrors behind these single word hints.

Kimi (2021)There’s a vital undercurrent to recent mainstream American cinema in the form of Steven Soderbergh’s tireless, unassuming productivity.Soderbergh is no stranger to success—either critical or commercial—nor to the upper echelons of studio filmmaking, and yet in the early 2010s he made a shift to a more unassuming way of working. The trigger was a larger, long-gestating seachange across the cinema landscape. The major American studios increasingly turned away from producing a variety of movies, of various sizes, types and expectations, and made fewer films but with ballooning costs and so little leeway for artistic risk. While put out by this great shake-up, Soderbergh embraced another: the medium’s mass digitization. His response has been to stay away from blockbuster projects but also to avoid making work that would obviously comply with the grinds and ploys known as “festival circuit” or “award season,” even if...

A new Steven Soderbergh movie is on the horizon, but it’s being released a little under the radar. The filmmaker behind “Ocean’s Eleven,” “Magic Mike” and “Traffic” tackles the thriller genre with a story set during the Covid-19 pandemic in “Kimi,” which serves as a performance vehicle for Zoë Kravitz. The film marks the first collaboration between Soderbergh and “Panic Room” and “Spider-Man” writer David Koepp, and is already drawing notice for being a lean, mean thriller that compels from beginning to end.

The barrier for entry into filmmaking is lower than it’s ever been thanks to your iPhone and a few key accessories. And iPhone cinematography isn’t relegated to indie directors — Steven Soderbergh shot his films “Unsane” and “High Flying Bird” on an iPhone and even told IndieWire in 2018 that he would likely keep doing it.

While the other streaming services set up recurring franchises, Hulu has opted to get a bit more experimental with its original offerings in August 2021.
Hulu’s list of new releases this month is highlighted by three original series concepts with promise. Reservation Dogs premieres on August 9. Co-created by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), this story will follow four indigenous teenagers in Oklahoma as they stave off boredom and adulthood. Next up is Nine Perfect Strangers on August 18. This miniseries, based on a book of the same name, is produced by David E. Kelley and features staggering cast of Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy, Luke Evans, Samara Weaving, and more.
Only Murders in the Building is likely the biggest thing to look forward to in August though. Premiering on August 31, this comedy stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez as three true crime-obsessed friends who stumble into a true crime of their own.

The story of Paddington's arrival in London is told from the beginning and features plenty of moments youngsters will remember from the books, including lots of glorious slapstick and the perfectly suited voice talent of Ben Whishaw. Hugh Grant might go on to take the glorious villainy crown in the sequel, but Nicole Kidman's evil taxidermist is a close second. Have marmalade sandwiches on standby for snacking. Abby Quinn will star in an upcoming Blumhouse and Epix movie set in Nashville opposite Shiloh Fernandez and Joshua Leonard. They join the previously announced Alexxis Lemire and Katey Sagal in the film, which has the working title of “Tattered Hearts.”
The movie centers on a promising up-and-coming country duo who seek out the secluded mansion of their idol (Sagal), a former country music star and “Music City” royalty turned recluse. What starts out as a friendly visit devolves into a twisted series of horrors forcing the friends to confront the lengths they will go to realize
their dreams. Brea Grant (“12 Hour Shift”) is directing from a script by Rachel Koller Croft.

As his fans will attest, Steven Soderbergh is a filmmaking machine. Since his return from “retirement” in 2016, the director immediately resumed his torrid production rate. Starting with 2017’s “Logan Lucky,” Soderbergh has made five films in the last five years, including 2018’s “Unsane” and “Let Them All Talk” for HBO Max last December. On top of that, he also made an experimental TV show for HBO, “Mosaic,” that came out in two forms: a six-episode limited series and a mobile app where viewers interacted with the plot’s trajectory.

Alex Wheatle (Steve McQueen)
Alex Wheatle, the fourth entry in Steve McQueen’s Small Axe anthology, offers a modest take on the process of unlearning cultural attitudes and biases through the eyes of a naïve teenager. In 1980, Alex Wheatle moves to a social services hostel in Brixton after spending his childhood in a group home, where he was subject to constant abuse from his white peers and caretaker. In Brixton, however, Wheatle finds himself immersed in the Black British community, from which he was displaced growing up in all-white Surrey, where he slowly but surely assimilates the patois, fashion, and most importantly, music of his culture. He quickly witnesses...

Steven Soderbergh is a film-process savant, pushing himself constantly, creating new ways to make and share his art. Whether it be experimenting with the means of distribution (Logan Lucky), using smartphones for the entirety of production, or creating a miniseries in which the viewer could help solve the mystery (Mosaic) through an app on their phone, he’s obsessed with new technology pervading our lives and how that affects the medium in which he so comfortably operates. With a thinly outlined script (courtesy Deborah Eisenberg), completely improvised, and shot in two weeks aboard a boat headed for the UK, Let Them All Talk is a welcome entry in the auteur’s continued experimental canon.

Exclusive: We hear that Matt Damon will be making an unbilled cameo in Steven Soderbergh’s latest HBO Max crime thriller No Sudden Move.
This reps the ninth time that the Oscar winning Damon has worked with the Oscar winning filmmaker following the Ocean‘s trilogy, Contagion, The Informant, Behind the Candelabra, Unsane and Che Part 2. While Damon is traditionally starring in Soderbergh’s features, it’s not uncommon for him to take on smaller roles which was the case in Unsane and Che Part 2. I hear Damon will be shooting No Sudden Move for two days in Detroit, and he joins the already announced huge ensemble cast that includes Don Cheadle, Benicio Del Toro, David Harbour, Amy Seimetz, Jon Hamm, Ray Liotta, Kieran Culkin, Brendan Fraser, Noah Jupe, Bill Duke, Frankie Shaw and Julia Fox.

Picturehouse Entertainment has acquires U.K. distribution rights from FilmNation Entertainment for Justin Simien’s “Bad Hair,” which will be released in British movie theaters on Nov. 27.
The film received its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this year, following in the footsteps of Simien’s directorial debut “Dear White People” in 2014.
A satirical horror movie set in 1989, “Bad Hair” follows an ambitious young woman (Elle Lorraine) who gets a weave in order to succeed in the image-obsessed world of music television. However, her flourishing career comes at great cost when she realizes that her new hair may have a mind of its own.
In addition to Elle Lorraine’s breakout leading role, the ensemble cast includes Vanessa Williams (“Soul Food”), Lena Waithe (“Master of None”), Laverne Cox (“Orange Is the New Black”), Jay Pharoah, Kelly Rowland, Blair Underwood (“Set It Off”), James Van Der Beek (“Dawson’s Creek”), Chanté Adams (“The Photograph”) and Usher.

Here’s something different: Damien Chazelle, the acclaimed director behind “Whiplash” and “La La Land,” has released a short film shot entirely in vertical display on an iPhone.
Titled “The Stunt Double,” the short film stars Tom McComas as the eponymous stunt double — McComas is a professional stunt performer whose credits range from “The Dark Knight” and “Euphoria” to “Sonic the Hedgehog” — whose life flashes before his eyes during an especially outlandish scene. The film opens with McComas performing in some sort of action movie where he flees from a gun-toting duo by jumping off of a tall building. When his parachute fails, McComas closes his eyes and reminisces about the various films he’s performed stunts in.
Chazelle’s film then flashes through McComas’ character’s career, which includes work on projects ranging from a film that riffs on “Indiana Jones” to a romantic feature. Most of the fictional movies also star Preeti Desai,...

A couple of years ago, Claire Foy was poised to become yet another major A-list actor with three big-time projects being released in the span of one year. Coming off her Emmy-winning turn as Queen Elizabeth in “The Crown,” Foy was seen in films, “Unsane,” “First Man,” and “The Girl in the Spider’s Web.” While the first two films were well-received and her acting was lauded, it’s ‘Spider’s Web’ that seemingly derailed her upward trajectory.

To really understand this clever sassy robust film you must understand money. With almost zilch knowledge of how it works I could still sense a deep sense of mirthless laughter in the way the king of quirky direction Steven Soderberg plays around with the grim reality of global money laundering.
In that joyless laughter of this cleverer-than-you-think film, there is a message. Using the financial resources of the middle-class to make the rich richer, is not a laughing matter. But he, what can we do about it in a world that functions on inequality and injustice?
Soderberg's whimsical film on global money laundering could leave you confused about which side it is talking from. But then you realise which side this film is really on. It pitches its tone of savagely satirised rebuke against financial hoaxes at us, the gullible public that surrenders its lifetime's resources to institutions which, we hope against hope,...

Steven Soderbergh is renowned for his experimental style and perennial disdain for mainstream film norms. For that reason, it came as no surprise when he shot his disturbing psychological thriller “Unsane” entirely using an iPhone 7 Plus in 4K. Trailblazing in the sense it proves feature films can be made on a relatively low budget – around the $1.5 million mark – Unsane has the director’s filthy fingerprints all over it.

Steven Soderbergh will continue to explore innovative distribution methods for his next project, “Let Them All Talk,” which has just landed at the upcoming HBO Max. The rom-com-sounding project — like “Wine Country” for film snobs? — seems suspiciously out of Soderbergh’s wheelhouse, and maybe that’s why it sounds so refreshing.
“Let Them All Talk” reunites Soderbergh with Meryl Streep, who stars in his 2019 film “The Laundromat,” which Netflix will take to the Venice and Toronto film festivals. “Let Them All Talk” will tell the story of an acclaimed author who takes a journey of self-discovery with old friends, bringing her nephew, played by Lucas Hedges, along for the trip. Hedges soon finds himself romantically involved with a fledgling literary agent, played by Gemma Chan. Candice Bergen and Dianne Wiest also star. The screenplay was penned by short story author and Deborah Eisenberg, who received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2009.

Steven Soderbergh wasn’t the first filmmaker to shoot an entire movie on an iPhone, but with his latest film “High Flying Bird” he’s proved yet again that it’s totally possible to have a professional, beautiful looking movie filmed with something that fits in your pocket. Here are some other feature films and a few shorts that have made use of Apple’s flagship smartphone.
“High Flying Bird” (2019)
Soderbergh shot “High Flying Bird” on an iPhone 8, which is now capable of filming in 4K resolution. The wealthy and bright realms of power atop expensive restaurants and skyscrapers for high-powered agents is far different than the mood Soderbergh was chasing on “Unsane,” but the film even has a sequence in which the action of a one-on-one basketball match isn’t captured on camera but by teenagers on, what else, their phones.

Harry Potter, High Flying Bird, the Pentagon, and more in today's daily Link Tank!
The American solar industry has rapidly expanded over past eight years.
"The American solar industry has seen rapid growth over the past eight years, a report released Tuesday shows. The Solar Foundation’s annual jobs census shows a slight decline in employment over the past year, but the overall trend points to a much larger industry aided by plummeting prices."
Read more at Inverse.
Here's the argument for rebooting the Harry Potter franchise.
"As a Potterhead, the Harry Potter movies occupy a very complicated place in my heart. I can watch Prisoner of Azkaban whenever it comes on, and the first two movies do certainly hold a certain amount of nostalgia over me. But my eyes truly glaze over at Half-Blood Prince and Order of the Phoenix, because they are drier than Merlin’s beard.

Photo: NetflixTeam sports don’t get more movie-ready than basketball. The triple drama of the team, the player, and the ball; movement in the horizontal and vertical; sweat and surface; the sound of paddling thwacks and clipped squeaks of shoe rubber on sugar maple. So it takes a mindset like Steven Soderbergh’s to make a film about the pro basketball in which the sport itself is never played. Sure, the same basic description applies to What Men Want—which, oddly, also features the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Karl-Anthony Towns. But Soderbergh’s interest has always been in the game within the game—the backroom play, the heist at the casino, fraud in business and finance—and the way money changes hands, whether it’s in the cash room or the board room. He has mastered the art of turning the movement of multi-million-dollar sums into metaphors. Still, High Flying Bird, the...
