There’s been a lot of good found-footage films coming out recently, such as Tahoe Joe 2 and Woods Witch. Now there’s The Glenarma Tapes, an Irish film that begins by telling us that seven people went missing in the woods around Glenarma one night in 2020. One was later found near death and in a coma. Two years later, the police found the footage we’re about to see…
The footage starts innocently enough, as we watch Gordy (Warren McCook; Hope Street) go through his day as a student at Mid Ulster College of Art. His friend Jimmy is making a day-in-the-life type film for his class project. He’s certainly an interesting subject, going from making insightful comments about Romeo and Juliet to...

Malcolm Gaskill’s book Hellish Nell: The Curious Case of Britain’s Last Witch Trial is getting a movie adaptation, with Deadline reporting that Aislinn Clarke (The Devil’s Doorway) will direct the upcoming Hellish Nell for Studiocanal and The Picture Company.
Deadline details, “Hellish Nell is a chilling horror-thriller based on the real-life medium Helen Duncan, the last UK citizen convicted and imprisoned for witchcraft. The movie follows Helen’s harrowing journey as her innate powers change her life and those closest to her. ”
Chris Basler wrote the screenplay, an adaptation of Gaskill’s book. The Picture Company partners Alex Heineman & Andrew Rona will produce through their deal with Studiocanal.
Here’s the official synopsis for the book, first published in 2001: “One of the last criminal trials using the 1735 Witchcraft Act was, improbably, in London in 1944. The accused was Helen Duncan, a middle-aged Scotswoman. This is her extraordinary story.

Exclusive: New Europe Film Sales has boarded international sales on Northern Irish director Aislinn Clarke’s second feature Fréwaka ahead of the AFM, where it will unveil first footage.
The Irish and English-language production follows Clarke’s 2018 found footage horror The Devil’s Doorway, which was acquired by IFC for the U.S.
Billed as the first ever Irish-language horror, Fréwaka revolves around care worker Shoo, who is haunted by a personal tragedy.
Shoo is sent to a remote village to care for an agoraphobic woman, who fears both the neighbors and the Na Sídhe – sinister folkloric entities she believes abducted her decades before.
As the pair develop a deep connection, Shoo becomes consumed by the old woman’s paranoia, rituals, and superstitions, eventually confronting the horrors from her own past.
The title originates from the Irish word “fréamhacha”, meaning roots that are entwined underground.

Westerns are populated with cowboys, gunslingers, bandits, Native American, horses, cows and buffalos. But the genre is much more complex than shoot-‘em-ups. In fact, the best Westerns are Shakespearean in nature exploring such universal subjects as love, hate, revenge, greed, power and good versus evil. One of the most popular sub-genres is the “ranch” Western where the patriarch or matriarch — remember Barbara Stanwyck in “The Big Valley”– governs with a strict and often violent hand. They act like they are above the law and often take legal matters into their own hand. They are often widowers or widows and have sons who run the spectrum from hero to villain.
Jane Campion’s highly acclaimed Netflix Oscar-contender “The Power of the Dog” falls into this sub-genre. Set in Montana in 1925, the story revolves around the charismatic but sadistic Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch) who relishes being the master of a cattle rancher.

When not making tons of money collaborating with James Stewart, Anthony Mann directed some really grim westerns. This mini-epic spells out the ugly real-life Code of The West: seizing land and establishing private empires. Walter Huston’s T.C. Jeffords maintains his sprawling fiefdom through economic tyranny (he prints his own money and expects banks to accept it) — and by simple violence, murdering the people that have lived on ‘his’ land for generations. Barbara Stanwyck is the feisty heir who wages generational war on her piratical father. It’s the darkest and most subversive of Huac-era ‘noir’ westerns.

Mid-way through October make your way to the Mayhem Film Festival in Nottingham for some of the best genre cinema the year has had to offer. Today the festival announced five more additions to this year's fest. Found footage film The Devil's Doorway, fever dream horror Mandy, survival thriller What Keeps You Alive, horror anthology Nightmare Cinema and Japanese zombie horror One Cut of the Dead are now part of the program. They join the previously announced Field Guide to Evil, Anna and the Apocalypse and Japanese sci-fi flick Inuyashiki. I've seen three of the new additions. Mandy is an easy sell. I know every talks about Nicolas Cage in this, but Linus Roache is equally, if not more amazing in...

I'm a sucker for found-footage film's and I'm especially digging the premise of this upcoming feature from IFC films called The Devil's Doorway. The film takes place at a women's home in Northern Ireland, where all sorts of women said to be living immoral lives in the eyes of the Catholic Church. Two priests travel to the home to document a miracle of a Virgin Mary statue weeping blood, and then things get weird. The film premieres on VOD July 13, so check out the synopsis (via Slashfilm) and trailer below and make sure to make a note of that if you're interested!

Northern Ireland, 1960: Father Thomas Riley (Lalor Roddy) and Father John Thornton (Ciaran Flynn) are dispatched by the Vatican to investigate reports of a miracle—a statue of the Virgin Mary weeping blood—at a remote Catholic asylum for “immoral” women.

Writer/director Aislinn Clarke has worked in theatre and made a couple of short films but her debut feature is bound to get her some attention; The Devil's Doorway looks downright great.
Lalor Roddy and Ciaran Flynn star as Father Thomas and Father John respectively, a pair of priests who are sent by the Vatican to investigate a miraculous event at an Irish house for "fallen women." What they find there isn't anything like a miracle but rather a complete nightmare complete with ritualistic abuse, tyrannical nuns and perhaps even a bout or two of demonic possession.
The movie unfolds in 1960 and Clarke shoots in 16mm, giving The Devil's Doorway a found-footage kind of vibe but thankfully, it doesn't seem to rely too much on the handheld camera approach.

"The Devil doesn't have to hide. He roams freely amongst us..." IFC Midnight has debuted an official trailer for an Irish horror film titled The Devil's Doorway, which played at the Seattle Film Festival earlier this summer. The film is the feature directorial debut of Aislinn Clarke, and tells the story of two priests who uncover something horrific. In 1960, Father Riley and Father Thornton are sent to investigate a miracle in an Irish home for unwed mothers only to discover that one of the residents is possessed by the devil. The cast of The Devil's Doorway includes Lalor Roddy, Ciaran Flynn, Helena Bereen, and Lauren Coe. The grainy 8mm cinematography style is spooky, but I'm not sure there's anything more to this film than any other possession / exorcism horror before it. If this kind of horror is your thing, then take a look below. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster...
