Among the well-known avenues of support for scriptwriting in the film industry, such as the Sundance Screenwriter’s Labs and Cannes’ The Residence, stands France’s Le Groupe Ouest, offering mentored assistance at the script development stage. Cineuropa revealed the eight filmmakers selected for Le Groupe Ouest’s 2024 writer residency, comprising two sophomore features and six debut projects. The coastal setting of Brittany likely contributes to shaping future works, as evidenced by the consistently high-quality output from past participants, some of whom have gone on to present critically acclaimed films at top-tier festivals. Ray Hildebrand, the singer-songwriter whose duet “Hey Paula” with his friend Jill Jackson under the names Paul & Paula became a million-selling No. 1 hit in 1963, died August 18 of dementia complications at his home in Overland Park, Kansas. He was 82.
His death was announced to The New York Times by his son-in-law Larry Serling.
The song, a tender ballad in which two young lovers trade verses pledging their affections and desire to marry, was something of a 1950s-style teen pop doo-wop holdover that captured a radio-listening audience just before the Beatles-led British Invasion took over the airwaves. The song remains a staple of Golden Oldies fare, and has been used as an era-signifying backdrop in period movies from National Lampoon’s Animal House to modern-day TV series like Halt and Catch Fire. Watch a 1964 performance of the song below.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Wednesday’s episode of “The Masked Singer”
Only one contestant was sent home on “The Masked Singer” this week, as opposed to the usual two that have started saying their goodbyes with the new format of the show. And under the mask this week was a veritable hip-hop icon.
It was New York Night on the show for week three, and to ring in the theme, the episode kicked off with a performance from judge Robin Thicke. He got the show rolling with a performance of “Living in New York City” from his album Paula, which eventually resulted in host Nick Cannon and the rest of the judging panelists joining him on stage.
New York Night also brought the appearance of a few special guests, which TheWrap exclusively revealed Wednesday morning. Both the countess herself, LuAnn de Lesseps, and the Long Island Medium Theresa Caputo, appeared on the episode,...

U.K. network Channel 4 has commissioned a new documentary from Curious Films about TV host and author Paula Yates, who died following a heroin overdose at the age of 41 in 2000.
The two-part doc, titled simply “Paula,” will explore the “life and legacy” of the wildchild presenter, whose relationships with Boomtown Rats’ vocalist Bob Geldof and rockstar Michael Hutchence dominated the headlines in the late 1990s. Yates and Geldof’s daughter, model Peaches Geldof, also died of a heroin overdose at the age of 25 in 2014.
The doc promises to “reveal the real Paula Yates behind the tabloid-driven narrative, drawing on an extraordinary set of never-before-heard interviews, the words of some of those who knew her best and a wealth of archive to tell her story in her own words.”
Yates was a Channel 4 staple during her prime, fronting shows including “The Tube” and “The Big Breakfast” for which she interviewed...

The poroject is based on the classic Siegfried Lenz’s novel.
Wild Bunch has boarded German director Christian Schwochow’s adaptation of Siegfried Lenz’s classic novel The German Lesson (Deutschstunde) which begins shooting in North Rhine-Westphalia in March.
Schwochow, who has oscillated between TV and feature productions throughout his career, is at the Berlinale this year with his buzzed-about high-finance thriller TV series Bad Banks (pictured) which premieres in the festival’s TV sidebar.
One of the classic novels of post-Second World War German literature, The German Lesson explores human behaviour under a dictatorship through the tale of a young man who defies his police officer father to save the expressionist paintings of a neighbour from destruction during the Nazi reign.
Network Movie Film is producing alongside Senator Film with the support of Zdf. The picture sees Schwochow collaborate again with his mother Heide Schwochow who wrote the screenplays for three of his previous feature films: November...
