Sticks and Stones: Romano’s Lovable Directorial Debut
Ray Romano’s first foray into acting-directing, Somewhere in Queens, is an uproarious family drama more akin to Little Miss Sunshine than Everybody Loves Raymond. At first, this winsome romp feels familiar, even cutesy—a raucous Italian-American household, bumbling father, protective mother, soft-spoken son, college hoop dreams at odds with the family business—but the film’s surprisingly touching sensitivity shoots for the moon and scores.
Sitcom fans will be pleased to find Romano’s creative stamp all over Queens, but this well-acted ensemble is more heart than formula; it functions (and dysfunctions) when pieces collide in a delightful pileup of human errors.…...

‘Stranger Things 3,’ ‘The Witcher,’ ‘When They See Us’ Among Netflix’s Most Popular TV Shows in 2019
“Stranger Things 3,” “The Witcher” and “The Umbrella Academy” were among the most popular series offered on Netflix in 2019, the streaming giant has confirmed.
Netflix has issued a series of top 10 “most popular” lists for its content in various genres, breaking down the movies, series, nonfiction programs, documentaries, comedy specials, kids and family and international releases that were among the most viewed in the U.S. market.
Netflix released rankings, but did not disclose actual viewership stats, in keeping with its longstanding policy. According to a Netflix spokeswoman, the rankings were determined not by total number of viewers, but by counting the total number of households to stream an individual title for at least two minutes during the first 28 days of its release. For those titles that have not yet been available for 28 days, the company used projections based on the early data to estimate a 28-day viewership number, a process...

As the debate among comedians rages on over whether sensitivity and political correctness are hurting stand-up comedy, Gary Gulman says the real people who are getting too sensitive are comedians themselves.
“Audiences may be sensitive, but no one is more sensitive than a comedian,” Gulman said in an interview with TheWrap. “I spend my day overreacting to petty injustices, and my evenings railing — outraged — to strangers for a loss, most nights, a financial loss. I make less money than I spend on Uber and Lyft every night to share my anger with the audiences.”
Gulman weighed in on the topic as he’s promoting his new HBO stand-up special “The Great Depresh,” in which he reveals that for his entire life he found himself unable to speak his mind when it came to admitting he was struggling with severe depression.

Sarah Silverman weighed in on the current state of comedy and so-called cancel culture from the Emmys red carpet on Sunday.
“There’s definitely pressure,” Silverman told red carpet host Kelly Osbourne in response to a question about being a comedian with the recent emphasis on political correctness. “There’s a kind of righteousness porn going on.”
The comedian, whose Hulu talk show “I Love You, America” aimed to bridge political and social divides, went on to say clarify that “there’s nuance” to a world where comedians are scrutinized for the things they say on and off stage. “There’s good and there’s bad.”

‘Leaving Neverland’ Director Calls Dave Chappelle’s Jokes About Michael Jackson Accusers ‘Revolting’
Dan Reed, who won an Emmy Saturday night for “Leaving Neverland,” said he was “physically sick” when he heard Dave Chappelle’s jokes about not believing Michael Jackson’s accusers.
“You can make comedy out of so many other things. Why not do something brave instead of crapping on a victim of child rape?” Reed said backstage Saturday after his Emmy win for Documentary or Non-Fiction Special at the Creative Arts Emmys.
Reed, who usually makes films about war, said he was trying to move away from such dark subject matter when he sat down to interview Wade Robson and James Safechuck, two men who say Jackson molested them when they were boys. Reed shared their stories in his HBO documentary.

Caitlyn Jenner became the first trans person ever to take the stage at a Comedy Central Roast, when she showed up to razz Alec Baldwin Saturday night. Despite the milestone, roasters like “Will and Grace” star Sean Hayes didn’t hold back at ribbing Jenner for her transition and a whole lot more.
“You’ve got some balls, girl,” Hayes joked in the opening moments of taping at the Saban Theatre in Los Angeles.
Jenner told the audience she knew what she was getting into just being at the roast, but explained that her decision to join was to inspire “future generations of transgender people.”
“I’m a person trying to figure out my life, just like everyone else,” Jenner said. “All I want is for future generations of transgender people to know that if I can find the courage to be ridiculed, you can handle anything… except Adam Carolla’s podcast.

In the opening moments of his new talk show “Good Talk,” comedian Anthony Jeselnik jokes that he’s “pretty much pure evil, straight from hell.”
His last stand-up special, “Fire in the Maternity Ward,” included jokes about dropping babies, a neighbor with Alzheimer’s and the idea that “any trimester is good” for an abortion. It drew far more positive press than the mixed reaction to Dave Chappelle’s recent “Sticks and Stones.”
Why? Jeselnik explained.
“Chappelle is perceived as a moral center in this country. He has a very nuanced take on race. He has a very nuanced take on a lot of things. So when he attacks the trans community or talks about ‘I don’t believe the victims who say they got molested,’ I think people truly get upset,” Jeselnik told TheWrap.

Dave Chappelle doesn’t waste any time wading into controversy in his latest Netflix comedy special: the comedian doubts the Michael Jackson accusers, talks Kevin Hart’s Oscars controversy, discusses Louis C.K. and R. Kelly’s sexual misconduct allegations and makes fun of trans people in “Sticks and Stones,” which dropped Monday.
“I don’t believe these motherf—ers,” says Chappelle of Jimmy Safechuck and Wade Robson, the two men who accused Michael Jackson of sexual abuse. Of the documentary “Leaving Neverland” that details their allegations: “Don’t watch it. It’s f–ing gross.” Although Chappelle says he doesn’t believe the accusers, he imagines a scenario where Jackson is guilty. “I mean, it’s Michael Jackson.
