Welcome to another look back at the biggest hits of 2023. Today, we’ll look through the documentaries and docu-series that picked up the most points in the Netflix top 10s throughout the year.
This list is compiled with data from FlixPatrol, which tracks the daily top 10s in over 90 countries globally. Their data provides a daily snapshot of what’s trending in the TV and movie list by providing points to each title that features. Although we love their data, it’s neither perfect nor an exact measurement of viewership. Netflix does provide its own data on this front, but it doesn’t allow us to paint a big picture of what was watched most in 2023 as it stands.
Because documentaries feature in the movie lists and docu-series feature in the TV list, we’ll split them separately. We’ll have a look at the documentaries and docu-series to do best globally first,...

Exclusive: Hat Trick Productions, the storied British production company behind Derry Girls and Have I Got News For You, is courting sale talks.
Co-founded by Jimmy Mulville in 1986, Hat Trick has been a bastion of truly independent UK producers but is now entertaining interest from groups including All3Media and Fremantle.
The company has not formally declared it is up for sale and has not engaged the services of an M&a broker, but Deadline hears that it has recently held promising conversations with potential suitors.
Mulville has toyed with the idea of selling in the past, most recently in 2018, when he compared the process to a real estate agent valuing a house. Four years on, sources said there had been a flurry of interest in Hat Trick amid the success of shows including bomb squad drama Trigger Point.

The series: "Inside the World's Toughest Prisons"
Where you can stream it: Netflix
The pitch: Host Raphael Rowe knows a thing or two about life behind bars. After being convicted and sentenced to life in prison in the U.K. for a murder he didn't commit, he decided to start researching law and criminal justice. After 12 long years, he was able to prove his innocence, and shortly after he began working with the BBC's Channel 5 to create documentaries about crime, justice, and prison reform. Now, he travels the globe and goes inside of the world's toughest prisons to show the human side of some of society's most inhumane places. He spends a full week living with the most hardened criminals on their terms as a fellow prisoner, sharing their experiences with the world and reminding viewers that inmates are people.
There are plenty of exploitative reality shows about prisons out there,...

Ryan Murphy’s Jeffrey Dahmer series “Monster” is breaking new records. In its second week on the Netflix Top 10 chart, the series has become Netflix’s ninth most popular English-language TV show of all time.
Netflix measures overall popularity by counting hours viewed in a title’s first 28 days on the streamer. After 12 days alone, “Monster” has been viewed for 496.1 million hours — and it still has 16 more days to climb even higher on the chart. According to Netflix’s figures, at least 56 million households have consumed all 10 episodes (approximately 8.8 hours total) of the limited series thus far.
This is the Evan Peters-led series’ second week as No. 1 on the English-language TV chart. Between Sept. 26 and Oct. 2, it was viewed for 299.84 million hours, making it the second most watched English-language series in a week ever. Season 4 of “Stranger Things” is the only Netflix title to beat “Monster” in that regard.

It’s been a typically busy week for Netflix, who added some great new content to keep us all in catch-up mode as we continue to mostly be stuck at home. Particular highlights include the Nicolas Cage-fronted History of Swear Words, high-profile original film Pieces of a Woman, and French drama Lupin. What, then, are some of the television shows, movies, and other material that have been made available on the platform over the last few days?
Well, on the series side of things, A History of Swear Words is a documentary wherein Cage plays the host, and each episode deals with a different word, tracing its history and various cultural contexts. We also received Lupin, which updates the French thief and master of disguise for the present day, as well as new seasons of reality shows. Netflix is adding a bunch of great new titles today. This Friday, January 8th, the streaming service has made seven fresh movies and TV shows available and what’s more, they’re all originals. There’s new family content, documentaries, international titles, anime and pretty much something to cover all bases. There’s nothing quite as big as yesterday’s Pieces of a Woman – the awards-worthy indie drama – but these newbies are still worth checking out.

The first month of a new year is a good time to make a new impression. And that’s just what Netflix seems set on doing with its list of new releases for January 2021.
The streamer is coming out strong with a third season of Cobra Kai, formerly of YouTube Premium. The next installment in Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence’s story is set to arrive…eventually. Netflix has not unveiled a released date yet but it will be during this month. While Cobra Kai is the highlight among Netflix’ original series, it’s not the only one by a long shot. Last year’s fun Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous returns for a second season on Jan. 22 and it will be accompanied by Fate: The Winx Saga. Also, if you’re a fan of things that will one day be .gif’ed to death, the Nicolas Cage-hosted History of Swear Words drops on Jan.

January is usually referred to as the theatrical industry’s dumping ground, where projects destined to fail are shoved out into the world to die a slow and painful death at the box office. Obviously, next month could see almost every new release face a similar fate as business is still showing no signs of recovery, but Netflix are looking to buck the trend and rehabilitate January’s reputation as a safe haven for fresh content, and the streaming service have some major original movies and TV shows on the horizon.
The most exciting without a doubt is History of Swear Words, which sees Nicolas Cage hosting a six-episode series that delves into the origins and multiple uses of profanity. Anyone who doesn’t have their curiosity immediately piqued by the idea of Hollywood’s most manic and memeable actor fronting a show where the episodes are titled “F*ck...
