The big Summer holiday weekend is finally upon us, so it’s getaway time. Ah, but what if you’re still a bit leery of travel, what with that “variant’ sweeping through several states? Well, there’s always the movies, though that loud, dim-witted auto-atrocity is still taking up a lot of multiplex space. This new release offers another type of getaway, one of location and time. It can be a bit confusing, but this feature is somehow old and new. And we won’t need Doc Brown’s DeLorean to immerse ourselves in the ozone of long ago NYC, 52 years ago to be exact. That sizzling Summer was the time of the Harlem Cultural Festival, spread out over several Sundays. Iconic pop culture entertainers performed before delighted audiences for free. Unfortunately, another music fest, about a hundred miles away in upstate New York, got all the media attention. Luckily it was all recorded,...

IFC Films is acquiring the North American rights to the documentary “Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck in Time” with plans for a release in the summer of 2021.
The deal was announced Wednesday to coincide with Vonnegut’s 98th birthday. IFC also released a teaser video for “Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck in Time,” containing a voicemail left by Vonnegut himself to the co-director of the film, Robert B. Weide.
“When I first approached Vonnegut to authorize this film in 1982, I envisioned a fairly conventional author documentary,” Weide said. “As the decades rolled by, fate stepped in, and what I wound up with was far from conventional. As my friendship with my literary idol grew, full disclosure was called for, and Don Argott came on to document the meta element of this story, as I continued to focus on Vonnegut’s biography. Nearly 15 years after his death, John DeLorean’s life story still feels tailor-made for the movies. He rose and fell, and then did it again. He married and remarried, and then did it again. He made huge mistakes, miraculously escaped punishment, and then — well, you get the idea.
So perhaps the problem is that there’s too much material here? “Driven” is the second film this summer to address DeLorean’s life, and the second one to feel overwhelmed by its subject. In the more ambitious “Framing John DeLorean,” documentarians Sheena Joyce and Don Argott addressed their subject head-on, mixing various styles and genres in an attempt to understand him.
Here, director Nick Hamm (“The Journey”) and writer Colin Bateman skirt the edges of his experience, as if they’re too intimidated to approach it directly. So we get a relatively amusing dramedy, but one in which DeLorean remains a...

Chicago – The story of auto impresario John DeLorean is definitely one of truth is stranger than fiction, but also has a basis in “what ifs?” The fascinating new documentary of his life tells that story, breaking down the vagueness of how a former General Motors superstar got involved in a drug deal to save his own car company. As always, a situation like that has more loopholes.

After declaring himself “so done” with playing Saturday Night Live‘s Donald Trump, Alec Baldwin is leaving open the possibility of extending his ersatz presidency.
In a recent USA Today profile, Baldwin said of playing Trump, “I’m so done with that. I can’t imagine I would do it again.” As he explained, “My wife [Hilaria] and I had a son a year ago, and since he was born, I’ve worked minimally because I wanted to be there for my wife and kids…. Welcome back to the weekly box office report! Each and every Sunday, you can expect a look at what made the most money in theaters, as well as just how all of the new releases fared. This week, a pair of new releases entered the marketplace, led by a pair of sequels. One was an animated sequel in The Secret Life of Pets 2, while the other was a franchise capper in X-Men: Dark Phoenix. How did they all do? Let us take a look right now at just that… Taking the top spot was The Secret Life of Pets 2, though much like last week, this sequel took in only a fraction of what the last installment did. With $47.1 million, it’s a huge come down from the $104 million or so that the prior engagement began with. While there still could be a third one in this series, it...

In 1965 at age 40, Cheverlot boss John DeLorean became the youngest division head in General Motors history. He was an automotive engineer who created cars like the Pontiac Gto, but DeLorean had the looks and lifestyle of a movie star.
“John was a legendary automotive designer who had great success at Gm,” Alec Baldwin, who plays DeLorean in the new film Framing John DeLorean, tells People in this week’s issue. “John made his name in the business, and that business was like a movie. You release something and if it’s a hit, you’re the king for the time being.

Alec Baldwin says he likely won’t be playing Donald Trump on NBC’s Saturday Night Live anymore. “I’m so done with that,” the actor told USA Today yesterday.
In an interview to promote the hybrid feature-documentary Framing John DeLorean, in which he plays the notorious car designer (opening in New York and on-demand today), Baldwin was asked whether he’ll return to SNL when the late-night sketch comedy show returns in the fall.
“I can’t imagine I would do it again,” Baldwin said. “I just can’t. They should find somebody who wants to do it. They’re all my dear friends and I love going there, but the other thing is that I’m going to go to work this fall in a way I haven’t done in a while. A curious experiment that may be best suited to the freedom of a festival setting, “Framing John DeLorean” aims to finally crack the mystery of its titular subject. As we learn early on, the erstwhile car magnate has inspired several filmmakers over many years, but few of them have, until now, gotten their projects off the ground.
Directors Sheena M. Joyce and Don Argott are not just up-front about the difficulty DeLorean’s personality poses; they turn his opacity into prime motivation. This ambitious approach is, unfortunately, more intriguing than effective. That may be because, as the filmmakers freely admit, DeLorean appears impossible to know. They do make an unusually concerted effort though, approaching him from no less than three separate angles.
At first it appears that we’re watching a traditional documentary, in which various colleagues and relatives share their observations alongside well-sourced footage. We learn about the workaholic...

Emilio Estevez puts his money where his mouth is: More than two decades ago, after headlining some of the most era-defining youth-culture hits of the 1980s — “The Outsiders,” “The Breakfast Club,” “St. Elmo’s Fire” — he left the studios behind and rebranded himself an independent filmmaker.
“My accountant curses that choice — still,” Estevez said. “Like, ‘How we gonna? … You’re 20 years in arrears.’ He doesn’t really sound like that, but it sounds like that to me. I finally just said, ‘I’m not gonna participate in the types of films other people want me to make. Alec Baldwin’s future on “Saturday Night Live” impersonating Donald Trump may be more unclear than that of the actual Trump presidency. Speaking to IndieWire to promote his new film with director Emilio Estevez, “The Public,” the conversation pivoted to his portrayal of the President.
“We’re not doing a David Fincher movie here, or a Soderbergh movie, where we’re gonna etch some finely rendered impersonation of Trump,” Baldwin said, when asked about how his impression has changed in the more than two years he’s been playing Trump. “I made him as two-dimensional as I believe he deserves to be made. And we’ve certainly vulgarized it from time to time, beyond certain limitations. But it’s essentially us repeating back what he says, and just holding up a mirror to what he says and does.”

In the new film “Framing John DeLorean,” Alec Baldwin plays the beleaguered car manufacturer who invented the “Back to the Future” car and gambled everything in pursuit of the American dream.
