Larry is delighted his novel has been accepted for publication but dismayed by his family's apathy as Margo is more interested in the sexy priest and Gerry is obsessed with adding to his menagerie. To make amends Louisa organizes a public reading but it is poorly attended though good reviews in the English press are the cause for a party, where everybody gets drunk on Leslie's home-made kumquat liquor. However Larry's latest manuscript is destroyed during the festivities and he decides to move to his own flat, leaving a despondent Louisa to be consoled by Hugh Jarvis.
