Last year, when Australian twin filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou—best known previously for their YouTube channel “RackaRacka”— released their debut feature horror film “Talk to Me,” it not only managed to rake in an impressive $92 million against a budget of $4.5 million, but it also garnered rave reviews and announced the arrival of two bold new voices that would surely reinvigorate the genre.

We know for sure that Danny and Michael Philippou, the sibling directing duo behind the Australian horror film Talk to Me (read our review at This Link, watch our interview with the directors in the embed above) are going to be making a sequel to that movie. The film not only racked up over $90 million at the global box office, it also earned praise from the likes of Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, Jordan Peele, George Miller, and Ari Aster… so it was no surprise when A24 announced they had given a greenlight to the a follow-up, titled Talk 2 Me. But while the sequel moves ahead, one person who still doesn’t know if they’re going to be involved with it is Talk to Me star Sophie Wilde.
Talk to Me marked the feature directorial debut of the Philippou brothers, who have a following of over 6 million subscribers on their YouTube channel RackaRacka.

The teens in “Talk to Me” might be trapped in the spirit world, but the Australian horror movie’s franchise potential is alive and thriving. A24 has ordered a sequel to Danny and Michael Philippou’s feature directorial debut, the production company announced Tuesday.
The news comes just less than two weeks after “Talk to Me” had its theatrical release in the United States on July 28. In addition to announcing the sequel, A24 shared the film’s title card, revealing that, in the great tradition of “2 Fast 2 Furious” and “Scre4m,” the film will be titled “Talk 2 Me.”

A few days ago, we shared a snippet of a Hollywood Reporter interview with Danny and Michael Philippou, the directors of the Australian horror film Talk to Me (read our review at This Link, watch our interview with the directors in the embed above), in which they said they wouldn’t be able to resist making a sequel if they are given the opportunity. Now The Hollywood Reporter has revealed an even more exciting bit of news: the Philippou brothers have already filmed a prequel to Talk to Me!
Talk to Me features a character named Duckett, played by Sunny Johnson – and when The Hollywood Reporter directly asked the Philippous if they have been talked about making a Duckett prequel, Danny answered, “We actually shot an entire Duckett prequel already. It’s told entirely through the perspective of mobile phones and social media, so maybe down the line we can release that.

The box office success of the A24-distributed Talk to Me is extremely good news for brothers Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou, whose popular YouTube channel “RackaRacka” is now paving the way for a successful career as feature filmmakers. What’s next for the Philippou brothers? Well, it sounds like it may be something they already shot.
In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter about all things Talk to Me this week, the brothers reveal that they’ve already filmed some kind of prequel to the events of Talk to Me.
More specifically, they shot something that fleshes out the story of Duckett, a previous victim of the film’s supernatural hand whose horrifying fate was revealed in the opening scene.

From high jinks on YouTube to the high-brow slate of A24, Danny and Michael Philippou’s origin story is about as 2023 as it gets.
The twin Australian brothers began making homemade horror movies at the age of nine, and in 2013, they took things a step further by creating their YouTube channel, RackaRacka, which now sports nearly 7 million subscribers. The Philippous’ videos featured the usual antics of those who grew up on WWE, Jackass and genre movies, but they always contained a number of flourishes that pointed to the brothers’ greater aspirations as filmmakers.
Eventually, the brothers Philippou were inspired by their friend Daley Pearson’s short film about possession as a means to get high, and out of that, Talk to Me was born. Having worked on local Australian movie sets such as The Babadook (2014), the twins made use of their connections at Causeway Films and approached founders Kristina Ceyton and Samantha Jennings.

“Talk to Me” is, unquestionably, the horror movie of the year. A fast, funny, very scary campfire story about a group of Australian teens who treat a cursed hand that opens a doorway to the spirit realm like a common party drug. (“One more time!”)
What makes the movie even more impressive is that it was directed by twin brothers Danny and Michael Philippou, known mostly for their YouTube channel RackaRacka (with nearly 7 million subscribers), full of prankish, impish content that still exhibits a technical knowledge and playful willingness to experiment. (A video simply titled “DC vs Marvel (Avengers Battle)” has 74 million views.)
The Philippou brothers went from YouTube to having their movie released by A24. A24 is also, of course, putting out a limited-edition line of merchandise. And you know what? They seem thrilled.
TheWrap spoke to the Philippou boys on the day that “Talk to Me” hit theaters and they were overjoyed.

[This story contains spoilers for A24’s Talk to Me]
Talk to Me, the Australian horror film that racked up a $10 million box office haul this weekend, ends on a particularly disturbing note.
The protagonist Mia (Sophie Wilde) is now one of the spirits she summoned via an eerie embalmed hand, stuck in a purgatory of her own making, conjured by another group of people who now possess the spooky item that drove her to madness.
The directors, twins Danny and Michael Philippou, want to leave a lot up for interpretation when it comes to their movie, which was picked up by A24 out of Sundance. But would they continue exploring the universe they created in a sequel? Possibly.
“Part of me is like, ‘Yeah, maybe it is done,'” Danny tells The Hollywood Reporter. “The other part of me is like, ‘Oh, my God. Give me a sequel, please.’ I’ve got these set pieces that I’m like,...

With their incredibly atmospheric and compelling debut feature Talk to Me, a fairly gory supernatural title out of Australia, twin brother filmmakers Danny & Michael Philippou have set themselves up as the next great A24 success story.
Directed by the duo from Danny’s script written with Bill Hinzman, Talk to Me tells the story of Mia (Sophie Wilde), a teenager grappling with the loss of her mother who gets in over the head, to say the least, when she and her friends begin playing a malevolent party game as a kind of way of getting high. As they sit around a table and whip out their smartphones to record, Mia grips a mysterious ceramic hand, says some magic words and finds her body taken over by an unknown spirit. There was initially interest in making the film at a major U.S. studio. But when the brothers sensed that their vision would be compromised,...

On the press tour for Talk to Me, Danny Philippou’s car accident as a teenager has risen to a level so apocryphal that he assumes I’m already aware of the incident. At 16, he suffered an episode of irrepressible shakiness while hospitalized for his injuries, and it took the touch of his sister’s hand to bring him out of shock and back to reality.
That experience is just one of many that feed directly into Talk to Me, the film he directed with his twin brother, Michael. Like many a great directorial debut, the work feels like a release of everything the 30-year-old filmmakers have been waiting to share with the world. In their freshman feature, suburban Australian teenagers in search of freedom and fun turn to the new frontier spiritual possession through a ritual involving an embalmed hand.

Oh, the lengths you would go when you’re young, curious and perpetually hungry for a unique high you haven’t felt before. Just ask the teenagers at the heart of Australian twin brothers Danny and Michael Philippou’s plucky debut feature, “Talk to Me,” an accomplished horror film with scares and ideas, however meandering and adrift.

There is a big stigma around filmmakers on YouTube. There have been several movies centered on or about YouTubers, and the vast majority have been comedies -- following the success of 2008's "Ryan and Sean's Not So Excellent Adventure" -- and yet, none of them had the level of acclaim or attention from filmmakers like Jordan Peele and Steven Spielberg until "Talk to Me" made its world premiere at Sundance earlier this year. The movie is directed and co-written by Australian filmmakers Danny & Michael Philippou, known from their YouTube channel RackaRacka, where the two make wild action and horror-centric videos with tons of rather impressive visual effects and stunts.

Supernatural shocker Talk to Me marks the feature debut of twin filmmaking duo Danny and Michael Philippou, the creative minds behind the controversial YouTube channel RackaRacka, a showcase for intense action horror comedy videos with a substantial subscriber base. The channel’s penchant for graphic violence and extreme pranks stirred up controversy in the past, including a run-in with authorities, which also extends to their debut. Talk to Me delivers an intense, nightmarish horror movie that’ll leave you breathless.

Chicago – True unforgettable scares in a horror film are few and far between, despite many attempts. The unsettling air of the new film “Talk to Me” is lingering, as created by two Australian brothers and YouTube sensations, Danny & Michael Philippou. Their channel RackaRacka gave them the opportunity to make their debut film.
Australian teens Mia (Sophie Wilde), brother/sister Riley (Joe Bird) and Jade (Alexandra Jensen) gather with other friends to participate in a bizarre “lights out” ritual. A plastered mummy hand is grasped by an individual as they intone “talk to me,” and when a spirit appears they entreat them to enter their bodies. Remarkably, it works differently for Mia, Jade and especially Riley, with unintended consequences. When the effects prove not to wear off, trouble from the inhabitants of the afterlife soon follow. The film was co-directed by Danny (also co-writer) and Michael Philippou in their feature film debut.

RackaRacka film-makers Michael and Danny Philippou let rip in their feature debut about suburban teens and an occult craze
The Philippou brothers, Michael and Danny, are young film-makers from Adelaide who started as production runners on Australian horror classic The Babadook and achieved a cult following for their film spoofs on YouTube under the handle RackaRacka; now with their debut feature they’ve let rip with a blast of wild punk energy and gleeful anarchy with this terrific scary movie. The opening party scene on its own has more voltage than a lot of horror movies, or any kind of movie. If the Sex Pistols ever directed a version of The Monkey’s Paw, it might look like this: a chilling adventure under which there is, however, an undertow of pathos, its title an ironic twist on the emotional pain involved in not talking about your feelings.

RackaRacka‘s debut feature film is now the No. 1 top-rated horror movie of 2023 on Rotten Tomatoes.
For Og YouTube viewers, “RackaRacka” should ring a bell, but for those who aren’t familiar, it’s a longtime prank channel run by Australian twins Danny and Michael Philippou. Their boisterous, high-production, VFX-filled, and sometimes YouTube Tos-violating (and/or lawbreaking) videos have brought the brothers nearly 7 million subscribers.
Earlier this year, the Philippous announced they’d signed a distribution deal with A24 for their first feature-length film, Talk to Me. The movie follows a group of young friends lured in by something they saw on social media: a ritual to summon spirits. Of course no one takes it too seriously–but then the good ol’ horror movie twist comes in when main character Mia (Sophie Wilde) begins hearing from her dead mother.
Danny co-wrote the script with Bill Hinzman based on a concept from Daley Pearson.

Who would have thought that a small indie Australian film that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival would become one of the year's most anticipated horror movies? We certainly didn't, but therein lies the beauty of "Talk to Me," A24's upcoming acquisition that has taken the horror community by storm. Danny and Michael Philippou's genre-bending debut finally has a trailer, and you're gonna want to be sitting down for it.
It can be difficult to combine classic horror tropes with modern sensibilities. However, the way that "Talk to Me" is approaching this combination seems to be pretty interesting. While social media and the "kids these days" mentality is present throughout, it seems to be only one part of a larger, terrifying tale. It is a truth universally acknowledged that those who play stupid games win stupid prizes. Or in the more modern parlance, if you fuck around, you find out. In spite of these colloquialisms, and many just like them, anyone who was ever young has played these games and fucked around much. Whether it’s by way of drinking from a keg at a party, passing around a vice that was of a more illegal vintage, or simply driving over the speed limit, we have a tendency in our youth to do stupid things for the thrill, especially if a pal is urging us to always take things further.
