In 1928 Evelyn Waugh satirised the drunken toffs of Oxford University stripping down a lowly theology student and now he is expelled. The toffs could afford to buy their way out by paying the fines. Jack Whitehall is the naive Paul Pennyfeather finding himself in a pickle after his indecent exposure and sent to teach at a public school in Llanabba, Wales where he meets a bunch of assorted misfits and they are the teachers.

David Suchet is the inadequate headmaster Dr Fagan with two masculine daughters, Douglas Hodge is the drunken, gay wooden legged Grimes who always ends up in the soup, Stephen Graham is the thuggish porter Philbrick, Vincent Franklin is the wig-wearing Prendergast. Despite being inadequately qualified to teach the subjects, Pennyfeather gets down to it with gusto.

He also takes an instant liking to Eva Longoria's Margot Beste- Chetwynde, mother to one of the pupils.

James Woods, the creator of the sitcom Rev has adapted Waugh's novel in a straightforward way but highlighting the absurdities of the characters and their situation. When one of the boy's gets accidentally shot in the foot during sports day we see blood gushing out and Dr Fagan asking for cake to give him.
