Sofia Vergara and Netflix are at the center of a new lawsuit filed by late Griselda Blanco’s children over upcoming limited true crime series “Griselda.”
Lead star and executive producer Vergara is named in the suit that alleges the series uses Blanco’s family’s images and likenesses without proper authorization. TMZ first reported the legal filing. IndieWire has reached out to Vergara’s representatives and Netflix for comment.
Vergara responded to the pending legal claim in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, saying of playing Blanco, “I’m trying to understand her from the beginning. I started from being fascinated by her, because she achieved many things that it was impossible for a woman to achieve, even though they were horrific.”
“Griselda” creator Eric Newman added, “It’s not my first rodeo. The Escobar family made similar claims [for the TV series ‘Narcos’]. We had a very specific story we wanted to tell. I believe we told it,...

The Godmother is the story of Eunice Carter, the first black woman to become a prosecutor in America. Eunice was the woman responsible for bringing Lucky Luciano, one of American history’s most notorious mobsters, to justice. Like many black women who changed the course of history, her story has largely been forgotten – until now. This is a different kind of mobster story.

“The Mother” remains Netflix’s biggest opening weekend of 2023 with 83.71 million hours viewed since its premiere. One of the shining moments in the Netflix action thriller is the largescale hallway fight The Mother (Jennifer Lopez) embarks on in the Mexican compound of baddie Hector (Gael Garcia Bernal). To the tune of Massive Attack’s “Angel,” Lopez goes from room to room, offing bad guys while trying to rescue her daughter.

I sent the song to the second unit director and stunt coordinator with the storyboards and I’m like, ‘This is the song.'” That meant that the trip hop band would have to allow Caro to use the song which,...

Along with Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith Thomas is producing for Nuyorican Productions, as well as Green, Benny Medina and Roy Lee and Miri Yoon for Vertigo Entertainment.
As Variety reported in December, Lopez is teaming with Netflix for another film, an adaptation of the bestselling book “The Cipher.” She will also produce and star in the movie, centering on an FBI agent who finds herself drawn into a serial killer’s strategically designed cat-and-mouse chase.

Jennifer Lopez’s latest movies have at least one thing in common: They’re all directed by women. The slate includes 2019’s “Hustlers,” directed by Lorene Scafaria, which grossed $157 million worldwide; next year’s “Marry Me” (from Kat Coiro), in which Lopez plays a pop star navigating a bad breakup with her famous fiancé (Maluma); and the upcoming drug-lord drama “The Godmother” (Reed Morano), in which Lopez portrays the title character.
In addition to starring in all these movies, Lopez produced them through her company, Nuyorican Prods., which she runs with Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, her former agent (who famously negotiated Lopez’s then-record-breaking $9 million salary for a Latina actress on 2001’s “The Wedding Planner”).
In a Zoom conversation for Variety’s Power of Women issue, presented by Lifetime, CEO Lopez and company president Goldsmith-Thomas spoke about their work as producers, starting with 2002’s “Maid in Manhattan.”

Jennifer Lopez and Armie Hammer will tie the knot in Lionsgate’s action-comedy “Shotgun Wedding.”
The film finds Lopez as Darcy and Hammer as Tom, a couple who gathers their families together for a destination wedding. Things start to go south, however, after the two get cold feet. But that’s not the worst thing about the wedding from hell — the ceremony goes completely off the rails when the entire party is taken hostage.
According to the official, pun-filled press release: “‘Til Death Do Us Part’ takes on a whole new meaning in this hilarious, adrenaline-fueled adventure as Darcy and Tom must save their loved ones — if they don’t kill each other first.”
Jason Moore will direct from a screenplay by Mark Hammer and Liz Meriwether. The film will be produced by Mandeville’s Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman, who previously teamed with Lionsgate on the sleeper hit “Wonder.

Jennifer Lopez and Armie Hammer will march down the aisle for an action comedy at Lionsgate called “Shotgun Wedding,” the studio announced Tuesday.
Ryan Reynolds was originally reported to be starring in “Shotgun Wedding,” but he’ll remain on as an executive producer for the film that’s directed by Jason Moore.
Lopez and Hammer will play a couple hosting a destination wedding with their lovable but opinionated families, only for the couple to get cold feet and for the entire wedding party to be taken hostage, forcing the couple to save their loved ones before they get at each other’s throats. Mark Hammer and Liz Meriwether wrote the screenplay.
Mandeville’s Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman are producing “Shotgun Wedding,” and they’ll be joined by Lopez, who will produce through her Nuyorican Productions with Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina.

Amazon Studios has set “The Handmaid’s Tale” director Reed Morano to direct and “Being John Malkovich” screenwriter Charlie Kaufman to write a feature film adaptation of “The Memory Police,” a 1994 sci-fi novel by author Yōko Ogawa, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Morano will also produce the adaptation of “The Memory Police,” which was just last year translated into English after first publishing in Japan over 25 years earlier. The book was also a finalist for the International Booker Prize and the National Book Award.

Only a select few actually remember the things that have disappeared and live in fear of the Memory Police, who work to make sure that things that have been erased, such as hats,...

Jennifer Lopez is back in the spotlight — and owning it. In the last year, the Boricua megastar turned 50, hosted “Saturday Night Live,” and received some of the best reviews (and box office grosses) of her acting career for her role as a stripper-turned-scammer in “Hustlers.” Now she’s set to headline the halftime show (with Shakira) at this Sunday’s Super Bowl Liv.
“The Super Bowl is as big as it gets,” a Hollywood publicist said. “She has got a track record, that is for sure.”
“Was ‘Hustlers’ her biggest moment this year? Or was it wearing an even skimpier version of that iconic Versace dress at age 50?” one Hollywood agent told TheWrap, referring to her appearance at the Versace show at Milan Fashion Week last September. “She’s the rare star that does it all, so sometimes that means she’s concentrating more on her music or stage show than say,...

Jennifer Lopez is a singer, dancer, actor and producer — and now she’s looking to add director to her resume.
The “Hustlers” star tells me she’s thinking of making her feature film directorial debut with “The Godmother,” a biopic about the late Miami cocaine queen Griselda Blanco. Lopez is already producing and set to star as Blanco in the movie, which follows her reign in the Medellín Cartel during the 1970s and ‘80s.
“That’s one that I’m really thinking about maybe directing,” Lopez says during an appearance on Thursday’s episode of “The Big Ticket,” Variety and iHeart’s movie podcast. “But again, I would need to have so much time to do that. It’s going to be a timing thing. I would have to clear, really clear decks. I could. And it’s just when the right time for that is.”
