Sony Pictures Classics announced t0day it has acquired Björn Runge’s new drama “The Wife” which debuted at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month. At first glance this might not seem like acquisition news worthy of your attention, except for the fact the film earned rave reviews for Glenn Close, an actress still waiting for that final, Oscar close up.
A six-time Academy Award winner, the fact Close has never won or been honored with a lifetime achievement award has had many wondering when the legendary actress will get her due.

Another year, and another Emmy Awards have wrapped up, and pundits are still reflecting on how it all shook out. The big winners of the night — “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Big Little Lies” — shared a common thread, beyond giving dramatic voice to women in leading roles. Both Hulu and HBO‘s series rolled out traditionally, with week by week episodes, instead of following the Netflix and Amazon format of dumping all the episodes at once.

Another year of Tiff came to a close this weekend, and by all accounts it was another resounding success. A few final premieres lit up Toronto, and the highly coveted (and often highly predictive for further awards contention) People’s Choice awards were announced. Ellen Page and Kate Mara were in attendance for the premiere of My Days of Mercy, which tells the story of two women on opposite sides of a criminal case who fall in love. While Tiff was inevitably coming to a close, Halifax native Ellen Page made sure to step out during Canada's biggest film festival. The closing night film of Tiff was C'est la vie, a French film about the staff's role...

Yet another puzzle picture, that came out on DVD back with the first wave of Wac films in 2010. An expensive romance with Albert Finney and Yvette Mimieux, it was filmed in Europe, co-written by Ray Bradbury and bears the music of Michel Legrand, including an exceedingly well known pop song. Yet it sat on a shelf for three years, only to make a humiliating world debut on TV — on CBS’s Late Nite Movie. It was clearly one of those Productions From Hell, where nothing went right.

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
A Cure for Wellness (Gore Verbinski)
The asylum-based film is a fairly interesting mini-genre to deconstruct. These movies almost always deal with perceptions of reality, questions of the self, and an innate fear of those in positions of power who operate in worlds of the ethereal. The question of the protagonist’s madness is almost always central, and the uncertainty over whether their paranoia is unfounded or justified is...

Mubi is showing Shengze Zhu's Another Year (2016) as part of a collaboration with the Film Society of Lincoln Center for their Art of the Real festival. The film is playing April 30 - May 30, 2017 in most countries around the world. How does a person change little by little throughout a year? And how is one’s life shaped by the trivial things and subtle moments that one experiences? It could be the person who sits beside you on the train, or an advertisement that you see on your way to the grocery store… The idea of making Another Year is to examine the accumulated power of mundane happenings, and to reveal how the mundane could appear mysterious and beautiful with the passage of time.I first met this three-generation family in the summer of 2012 in Wuhan, China. Wuhan is my hometown, and is the capital city of Hubei Province, as...

Last April, Patton Oswalt's wife, true crime writer Michelle McNamara, tragically passed away in her sleep due to a lethal combination of prescription drugs and an undiagnosed heart condition. Since her shocking death, the 48-year-old Emmy Award-winning comedian has been candid about everything from what it's like to raise their 8-year-old daughter, Alice, as a single dad to how he's really coping with life as a widower. With April 21 marking exactly one year since Michelle's passing, Patton decided to pen a touching tribute to his late wife on Facebook that will resonate with anyone who's ever loved and lost. "It's awful, but it's not fatal," he began, before describing the day his wife died. "I came back from dropping Alice off at school. I'd let Michelle sleep in. Got our daughter dressed and ready for school - lunch packed, class folder in her backpack. I stopped on the way...

After the announcement that production kicked off on Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel Day-Lewis‘ There Will Be Blood reunion, things have been fairly quiet from the London set. Another year, another live action remake of a classic Disney animation, but this feels like the big one. The one they’ve been building towards since Tim Burton brought his vision of Alice in Wonderland to the big screen. 1991’s Beauty and the Beast is beloved the world over, has had a countless number of re-releases on both the big screen and home media since it’s release, and those who grew up with it are the perfect age now to bring their own families to see this new, updated version. So, how does it fare? Well, thankfully Disney and director Bill Condon (Dreamgirls, Twilight: Breaking Dawn - Parts 1 & 2) found the perfect approach to this remake: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. While I don’t think I need to lay out the plot of Beauty and the Beast for you, it’s a tale as old...

I can’t believe I’m about to type these words: I don’t think I want Gilmore Girls to return.
This weekend’s news that Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos has begun “very preliminary” talks with (presumably) Warner Bros. for a second revival that would (presumably) pick up where last fall’s A Year in the Life miniseries left off initially filled me with excitement. As you know, I lapped up Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino’s four-part continuation like a blue whale coming off a 30-day fast. And, yes, it left me wanting more.

It’s happening again. Maybe.
In the wake of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life‘s runaway success, Netflix has begun exploring the possibility of a second revival. The streamer’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos reportedly told UK’s Press Association that “very preliminary” talks are underway with (presumably) Warner Bros. for more episodes.
“We hope [it happens],” he said. “We obviously loved the success of the show [and] fans loved how well it was done; it delivered what they hoped. The worst thing is to wait a couple of years for your favorite show to come back and for it to disappoint you,...

Berlin Independent Film Festival Announce 2017 Winners http://www.berlinfest.com/festival-2/festival-2017/ Another year, another Biff. 2017's edition no. 8 afforded Director Jim Devaux & Deputy Director Claudine Biswas-MacKenzie the opportunity to exhibit boundary crossing short films, innovative feature presentations alongside music videos and courageous documentary filmmaking from around the globe. Berlin Independent Film Festival is an international filmmaking shindig which takes place annually at the Babylon. It has steadily grown into a respected screenwriting and filmmaking competition in central Berlin each February. Biff is above all a place to exhibit genre-busting work to an international audience, who flock to Berlin for the Berlinale and its European Film Market. The two film festivals remain entirely unconnected. English and German language films play in original versions, whereas...

The world of film-related books has been dominated by Star Wars for the last two years, and that’s not a bad thing. With insightful authors like Pablo Hidalgo and gorgeous efforts like Star Wars: Galactic Maps, there has never been a better time to be force-crazed. This month is no exception, but you’ll also find new releases about Hitchcock, the Marx Brothers, and even two involving X-Files prequels. Let’s start with a book that took on new relevance just weeks after its release.
The Princess Diarist by Carrie Fisher (Blue Rider Press)
Carrie Fisher’s The Princess Diarist, a hilarious and touching look at her life as Star Wars icon Princess Leia, was a must-read even before the sudden, shocking passing of its author in December. It is even more poignant now. While the book earned pre-release buzz over its revelation of an on-set affair with Harrison Ford,...

After learning of her son’s death in battle she takes under her wing a young Russian Pow who escaped a German Prison camp despite her family’s concerns. Singer/songwriter, and ex-Boyzone member, Ronan Keating plays her brother Harold Gould. If you're a major movie geek then you'll be excited to hear that Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Thomas Anderson have started production on a new film! That means Day-Lewis is probably going to get another Best Actor win at the Oscars. The two talents previously worked together on There Will Be Blood, which was a masterpiece.
The title of the movie has yet to be revealed, but according to the press release, "Anderson will once again explore a distinctive milieu of the 20th century. The new movie is a drama set in the couture world of 1950s London. The story illuminates the life behind the curtain of an uncompromising dressmaker commissioned by royalty and high society."
Joining Day-Lewis is Lesley Manville, who was a BAFTA Award nominee for Best Actress for Another Year, and Vicky Krieps, whose films include A Most Wanted Man and Hanna.

Production has begun in the U.K. on writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson’s untitled new film. Three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis is joined in the cast by Lesley Manville, who was a BAFTA Award nominee for Best Actress for Another Year, and Vicky Krieps, whose films include A Most Wanted Man and Focus Features’ Hanna.
Focus holds worldwide rights to the film, and will distribute the film in the U.S. later this year with Universal Pictures handling international distribution.
The film’s producers are JoAnne Sellar, Megan Ellison, through her Annapurna Pictures, and Paul Thomas Anderson. The executive producers are Peter Heslop, Adam Somner, and Daniel Lupi. Chelsea Barnard and Jillian Longnecker are overseeing production for Annapurna.
Continuing their creative collaboration following 2007’s There Will Be Blood, which earned Mr. Day-Lewis the Best Actor Academy Award, Mr. Anderson will once again explore a distinctive milieu of the 20th century.

At long last, Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel Day-Lewis‘ There Will Be Blood reteam — which is set in the 1950s fashion industry in London — began production over the last few days, but aside from some photographic proof, Focus Features have been silent regarding the additional cast and crew. With a working title of Phantom Thread, a few readers have done some digging and we’ve got a few more members to add to the ensemble.
First up, taking a page from Mike Leigh’s handbook, Lesley Manville (Secrets & Lies, Another Year) and Richard Graham (Vera Drake, Titanic) have both joined the film, as noted on talent agency pages. Another year, another chance to do better. Amid reports that she has entered rehab for the fifth time in nine years, Heather Locklear issued a statement to E! Locklear, of course, has a long history of battling drug and alcohol abuse. In March 2008, the actress' doctor called 911 and claimed she was suicidal. [“Gilmore Girls” fans have been waiting to hear the “final four words” for almost a decade, but it turns out not everyone was ready for them. Below, IndieWire TV Critic Ben Travers (a casual fan), Senior Film Critic David Ehrlich (a “Gilmore Girls” lifer), and TV Editor Liz Shannon Miller (who only recently binged the series) interpret the extreme feelings experienced in those final seconds and try to find an answer as to how we can all move forward, together. Be warned: the discussion contains spoilers for “A Year in the Life,” up through those final four words, and for more on the ending, be sure to read Senior Editor Hanh Nguyen’s report on what’s next.]

To me, the reveal of Rory’s pregnancy felt like a classic cliffhanger ending setting up more narrative to come. And because so much coverage (including our own) led us to believe Netflix’s revival was here to provide the proper ending to a series denied one during its initial run, such a major last-second reveal could easily be seen as misleading to fans who were tuning in for some closure. Another year, another Call of Duty. This time around, in accordance with Activision’s three-tier development cycle, it is Infinity Ward that takes point at the helm for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, a new sub-brand within the juggernaut franchise that takes the blistering action into the far-future.
Don’t let the sci-fi tenets fool you, though; Infinite Warfare is very much steeped in the Call of Duty DNA. Not only does the single-player campaign feature A-list talent – Game of Thrones star Kit Harington and even Ufc champ Conor McGregor star – but the multiplayer component is as rich and varied as ever. Toss in the addition of the retro-futuristic Zombies in Spaceland mode and you have all the necessary hallmarks for a bankable hit.
