Being a huge 'Scooby Doo' fan for goodness knows how long, any new show, special or film would be watched with great anticipation. While 'Scooby Doo Where Are You' is still the jewel of the crown of the franchise, it was interesting to see 'Scooby Doo' rendered in Lego.
'Lego Scooby Doo', as said with the previous episodes, was something found quite by accident after watching the short special 'Knight Time Terror' and the two Lego-rendered 'Scooby Doo' films 'Haunted Hollywood' and 'Blowout Beach Bash'. After being pleasantly surprised by 'Knight Time Terror' and 'Blowout Beach Bash' (was mixed on 'Haunted Hollywood'), it made me interested to see more Lego 'Scooby Doo', having seen other films lately following the Lego animation trend and doing it remarkably well. They are very short episodes, but is quite an interesting little series even if different than expected, being more encounters with monsters with lots of fun and spooky atmosphere rather than a mystery with an unmasking.
"If You Build It, Pizza Will Come" is another winner from the series. Like all 'Lego Scooby Doo' episodes it does feel too short, and some may be disappointed at the lack of mystery or classic spooky elements with creepy monsters. The absence of Fred, Velma and Daphne didn't bother me because Shaggy and Scooby, the two most interesting characters in the franchise, are strong enough characters to carry the writing and stories on their own.
What "If You Build It, Pizza Will Come" has going for it especially are the inventions, they are just so cool and makes one wish that they could have the instructions to build and own them. Pizza making has never been more inventive, it sure is a less expensive way than paying just under £10 eating it at your local Italian restaurant or as a take-away and would be a good solution.
Shaggy and Scooby endear without having to say much, the most memorable quote is Shaggy quoting the title of the episode, and their friendship is really charming. There is some goofiness here but as ever it's amusing and endearing.
The animation again is very nicely done. It's very colourful, smooth and atmospheric, and the music is dynamic and whimsical with a nice haunted house vibe too with the main theme. Characterisation is on point as ever. Loved how the inventions were animated and how the camera was employed to effectively show them off.
Overall, for what it lacks in scares and mystery it more than makes up for it in fun and invention. 8/10 Bethany Cox
