Good, Clean Mystery
athompsonblue2 March 2021
It's Hallmark, so it's clean of profanity, sex, and excessive blood. But it's still a murder mystery with buried secrets. Sayre is estranged from her family, but don't expect this to be a movie about family reconciliation. It's about bringing wicked men to justice. The climax had a clever plot twist that I did NOT see coming.

Based on the book, this was a little darker than the usual Hallmark mystery fare.

The accents are inauthentic and distracting...and it is clear that this is not filmed on location in Louisiana, let alone anywhere near New Orleans...but if you can get past all of that the mystery itself is decent.

An interior designer's brother passes away from what initially is ruled a self-inflicted gun shot wound. She returns home to the family she fled years ago, for her brother's service. While there she starts to piece together that things just don't add up..and when she starts asking questions threats are made on her life telling her she is definitely on the right track.

The romantic leads are easy on the eyes and the mystery is decent leaving me on the fence about recommending this to anyone but hardcore Hallmark mystery fans.

Maine location

So funny...this movie was filmed in Camden Maine (at least the street scenes where you can clearly see the Laughing Cow, a gift shop in Camden). Small palm-like bushes are inserted to make it look like it's in the South, and also a brief view of an alligator! I'd love to know where the Coyle home is...gorgeous!

I quite enjoyed this movie, it definitely held my interest throughout. The twists in the plot kept me guessing and character development was very good.

Book was better

The book was much better. I can understand changing some things for TV, but too much was changed. Took the oomph out of the ending.

Inauthentic, Melodramatic Drivel

Warning: Spoilers
This is supposedly a gripping murder mystery, but it's just another cheesy Hallmark family drama (aka soap opera movie-of-the-week with the usual suspects taking the usual roles). The plot, allegedly set in Louisiana's bayou country, could've been set anywhere; there's certainly nothing authentically "Cajun" about any of it, other than a few verbal cultural references that any tourist would know, having spent a couple of days in the state. The accents are nothing you'll hear in Louisiana. And since they couldn't be bothered to even film it in the state, this "Louisiana" based movie is just another attempt to perpetuate stereotypes about the state.
