Great Indie Work
lukedepalatis4 December 2018
Since most of the reviews for this are about the DC film, I thought I might as well give this short an honest review. This film is a great example of the short film as an indie art form. It's a small, contained, heartwarming tale about a boy's first crush. Visually, the short film looks amazing. For something with a budget of under $300, I'm really impressed with how well this turned out. I'm not sure if it was shot on film (I doubt it, with the small budget), but the lighting looks very "filmish," with a soft, white glow around faces and hair. The story itself reminds me of Forest Gump; a throwback retrospective of life. It's not complex, but it packs a punch. Overall, I'm very impressed with how good this short is. Bittersweet and kind. It serves as an inspiration to any indie filmmaker.

Warning: Spoilers
Ignore the other two one-sentence reviews as this short film we got here has nothing to do with the new Marvel movie except the comic book character reference in the title. This one was written and directed by Kyle Misak and runs for minimally under 9 minutes. It is the story of a young boy and the girl he likes, seemingly his fiorst crush, even if there is nothing more than innocent friendship between them and what happens when he finds out that she has to move far away with her parents. And if you are curious how the character of Aquaman fits in there, then maybe go check this one out, it is for free on vimeo at this point. I thought it was a solid little movie, okay story for under 10 minutes, slightly sweetg and touching and innocent and I thought the soundtrack was pretty good too. The seemingly artistic and very relevant final shot with her receiving the bottle falls a bit flat though and did not feel as meaningful in a romantic way as it was intended to. Minor criticism only though. Overall, the film is certainly worth seeing. I give it a thumbs-up and it goes way too much under the radar, even if it may be getting some positive attention these days surprisingly with the Aquaman blockbuster being released.
