Being a huge 'Scooby Doo' fan for goodness knows how long, any new show, special or film would be watched with great anticipation. While 'Scooby Doo Where Are You' is still the jewel of the crown of the franchise, it was interesting to see 'Scooby Doo' rendered in Lego.
'Lego Scooby Doo', as said with the previous episodes, was something found quite by accident after watching the short special 'Knight Time Terror' and the two Lego-rendered 'Scooby Doo' films 'Haunted Hollywood' and 'Blowout Beach Bash'. After being pleasantly surprised by 'Knight Time Terror' and 'Blowout Beach Bash' (was mixed on 'Haunted Hollywood'), it made me interested to see more Lego 'Scooby Doo', having seen other films lately following the Lego animation trend and doing it remarkably well. They are very short episodes, but is quite an interesting little series even if different than expected, being more encounters with monsters with lots of fun and spooky atmosphere rather than a mystery with an unmasking.
"Lighthouse Lunch Break" is a nice, entertaining episode, if not one of the best of the series. Like most 'Lego Scooby Doo' episodes, it is somewhat too short and it also feels rather rushed and slight. Aside from the swamp creature, who has a little creepiness but not particularly scary, "Lighthouse Lunch Break" lacks the spookiness of other 'Lego Scooby Doo' episodes.
However, the putting-smiles-on-faces-worthy presence of Shaggy and Scooby, their endearing goofiness and their charming friendship more than make up for these and the absence of Fred, Daphne and Velma (luckily Shaggy and Scooby are strong enough characters to make this not matter so much). The swamp creature is not that scary but is a fun foe.
It's an amusing episode especially with the hot-dogs, the funniest part being the swamp creature belching which was so unexpected in timing and behaviour. Shaggy's dialogue is similarly of an exceedingly likable good-nature.
The animation again is very nicely done. It's very colourful and atmospheric and the music is dynamic and whimsical with a nice haunted house vibe too with the main theme. Characterisation is on point as ever.
Overall, a fun lunch break but there's better in the series. 7/10 Bethany Cox
