Experimental cinema or reality TV? !!
madhukar3017 September 2020
Autohead is a fine movie when we look at it in a experimental cinema point of view, but the problem with the movie is when director Rohit Mittal projects the film as a "reality tv" sequence with some rather confusing scenes & dialogues in between. It is absurd on the directors part to sell this feature as reality tv. I consider "Autohead" purely as an experimental parallel cinema with the director too playing a character in the cinema "who believes he is shooting a reality tv".

Cinematography & sound is as good as any parallel cinema around. Screenplay laced with profanity, vulgarity & violence rules the roost. Acting and dialogues by non regular actors adds to the film's authenticity. I wish the director was more clear in his work to present this film through the story. On the other hand I also strongly believe that the director deliberately adds the confusion and he too is just a part of the story. If that's the case hats off to you sir.

Overall, a confusing and a bizarre fest made strictly for parallel cinema audiences. If one views "Autohead" as a pure experimental cinema, it's a decent one time watch for its sound recording and the plight of migrant labourers in our Metros. The regular lengthy scenes without cuts are a threat to every movie lover.

Genre defining
Milind0410 February 2017
Out of my search for some independent cinema i stumbled upon this gem and i had no idea what i am going to get but it surely was one hell of a ride in the auto.plot wise its a master class in film making and gives you a feel of a found footage but it has a lot of layers and depth that you hardly see these days.It comes with a straight face and the problems of a developing society to name a few the sexism, regionalism and the common interest in violence and above all the idiosynchronicity. The main lead stands so tall that everything else falls short.Without giving too much i just want to say watch it because if you not you are missing something worth your time.

Documenting
kosmasp5 August 2017
It starts off weird and wrong, but they try to keep the rules of faux documentaries. So the fact someone is in the car filming becomes a side note. But it's important, especially when stuff happens and the people keep filming instead of reacting and doing something about it. Not to mention character moments that will make you cringe very audible while you shake your head in disbelief.

The whole thing feels more fake than a reality TV show. And while there was a time when people actually thought Reality TV was real, that time has past. And the "characters" do tend to act in strange ways. You just don't do those things and it gets annoying to watch. While the sentiment is clear and I do applaud people trying stuff out, overall the result is not satisfying

Well done Indian mockumentary thriller

Warning: Spoilers
Warning; possible spoilers below!

I saw this on Netflix. I am so glad that nowadays there is a chance to see these new and unexpected kinds of Indian films. This is nothing like "typical Bollywood" with their cheesy stories and massive musical numbers. Well...there IS a little drunken dance number, but it is realistic, sad, grotesque and foreboding.

All actors are good, and the technical aspects (sound, editing, picture etc) support the pseudo-documentary storytelling well. I will definitely try to find writer-director Rohit Mittal's other films. This film was like a mix of any actual documentary of honest poor working people of Mumbai, Scorsese's "Taxi Driver"(1976), John McNaughton's "Henry; Portrait of a Serial Killer"(1986), a little bit of the sentiment of Oliver Stone's "Natural Born Killers"(1994) and some better kind of psychological "found footage" horror film.

In the story a small film crew is documenting the everyday life and work of Auto Rickshaw driver Narayan (excellent Deepak Sampat). At first it looks like any earnest documentary of the simple life of a Mumbai working man who is struggling to make the ends meet. Slowly more and more worrying details about him creep in in small ways leading to the disturbing last half of the film.

Deepak Sampat makes the frustration, humiliation and derangement hiding just behind rickshaw driver Narayan's smiling face and what follows believable with subtle acting. Ronjini Chakroborty plays convincingly Roopa, the pretty and self-confident prostitute and indifferent object of Narayan's desire. Jhanvi Dwivedi is natural as Narayan's demanding village mother visiting her son. Even the bit parts are well acted and realistic.

Recommended for everybody who like "found footage" films as well as those who are not that into Bollywood-style but want to give a chance for new, modern Indian filmmakers. 9/10, mostly for acting.

Khan Review
zkzuber27 November 2021
User giving positive reviews seems to be crew members or their friends and family. I fast forwarded the movie after twenty minutes. In the climax the character kills the documentary makers I hope the same does not happen in real some one does the same after watching this thrash.

Surreal Mockumentary
yatinsurpur8 April 2017
For those who don't know about this new genre, a mockumentary is a good mix of scripted/fiction based content and documentary format. I saw AUTOHEAD at MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2016, when I saw this film I was blown away with this experience as before this film I had not seen any mockumentary film I had seen a mockumentary as a web-series on YouTube but not as a film. As the screening that I attended was a premier and so on the Director & Actor were present for the Q&A session post the film, so when the film got over and I saw the lead actor Deepak Sampat in front of me I could not believe that he is the same person who played Narayan as the experience of watching this mockumentary was so surreal that I somehow forgot that it was a scripted content. As this is one of the indie films I must say that the Director, camera & sound team was so in sync with each other that they somehow convinced me that it is a documentary and everything that I saw see is real for me that whole experience is just so Surreal that I think AUTOHEAD was one of the best experiments of last year's indie films. While writing this review I made sure that I don't mention any spoilers, cause I want people to just experience this film as it is.

Courageous film.
adityakripalani12 July 2019
The film inspired me with my own shot taking. The way the director chooses to take his shots is really something. The performance of the lead actor Deepak Sampat is Mindblowing. You can't believe that he's an actor. When the film wishes to disturb it does it so well. The locations are also lovely. Real. Effective. And the murder scene is directed beautifully. One of my favourite indies from our country.

Well worth the time, even 4 years after it's release
flyinghighsingh16 August 2020
The lead is phenomenal, movie is shot very realistically. Being from UP it was refreshing to see an accurate depiction of our language. The bhojpuri is spoken with such ease that it doesnt come across as caricaturih at all. Overall, an extremely novel, slightly disturbing concept we learn from and take forward. Mainstream bollywood, learn something!!

Not the typical awful Bollywood tripe
vmalast1 July 2019
This film is very realistic, reminiscent of Henry Portrait of A serial Killer. If you enjoyed Henry, you'll enjoy this. Its gritty, dark and dirty. No ridiculous song and dance numbers when someone dies, is happy, depressed and so on. A truly uncomfortable film. Kudos to the actors, writers and director for breaking out of the Bollywood box. I rarely ever give a 10 for a film. This honestly deserves it for breaking the confines of Indian film making
