In the scene in which the Duke of Cumberland (Peter Firth) persuades Sir John Conroy (Paul Rhys) to join forces in an effort to bring about a regency, an overhead shot reveals a marble-tiled floor with a central motif of oak leaves. Oak leaves were a symbol of the Tory party - the party they strongly favored.
It is suggested in an early scene that if Victoria makes it known she supports abolition (the abolishment of slavery), then Parliament will assume it was Lord Melbourne's influence and not her own thoughts, implying that he is an abolitionist, which is later confirmed in the Parliament scene; the real life Lord Melbourne opposed abolition out of "concern" that it would upend the way of things.
