Have you ever noticed Optimus Prime in Michael Bay's "Transformers" films isn't really all that heroic? To be fair, he doesn't start that way in Bay's original 2007 "Transformers" film. There, he tries to keep the fights between the Autobots and Decepticons away from densely-populated areas and, when that's not possible, makes an active effort to minimize casualties. Optimus even implores Sam Witwicky (Shia Labeouf) to place the AllSpark (ie. the film's MacGuffin) in his chest during the climax, knowing it will kill him but will also prevent his arch-nemesis Megatron and the other Decepticons from wreaking havoc on the universe.
Of course, Sam sticks the AllSpark in Megatron's chest to kill him instead, and Optimus and the Autobots return in the 2009 sequel, "Revenge of the Fallen," now working with humanity to hunt down the remaining Decepticons. By this point, however, Optimus has basically morphed into Judge Dredd, anointing himself judge,...

Comic-Con International kicked off last week at the San Diego Convention Center with fewer actors and writers than anticipated.
As usual, the convention was filled with famous comic characters, including Optimus Prime from The Transformers and Optimus Primal from Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
Although the event continued its typical flow, it was missing many other characters and famous faces attendees would have had the opportunity to meet.
Last month, in abiding by the strikes by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild — American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), most media companies were reportedly bowing out of the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con (Sdcc). Those companies include Universal Pictures, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, Sony Pictures and Netflix.
Marvel Studios made an appearance, but not without noticeable absences. Instead of the usual presenters (who often are actors or writers), some of the usual panels, with some led by current and former editors-in-chief,...

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, directed by Steven Caple Jr, is about to hit home video. The film stars Anthony Ramos, Luna Lauren Velez, Dominique Fishback, and a hilarious voice performance from Pete Davidson as Mirage. And since Mirage usually appears as a Porsche, the publicity team had something special in store for its video release. In honor of the film, several journalists made their way to the Porsche Driving Experience in Carson, California. We drove the Porsche 911 and the 718 Cayman and spoke with the film’s director, Mr. Caple Jr, and second unit director, James Madigan. It was quite a rush, and that’s a massive understatement.
I’ve never driven a Porsche in my entire life. And the second we arrived, we had the fantastic opportunity to get behind the wheel of these two beauties. Firstly, taking off in a car and going zero to sixty is more than a little thrilling.

After five long years, the Transformers franchise is finally heading back to theaters with the release of "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" on June 9. The new movie, which marks the seventh film in the franchise, stars Anthony Ramos ("In the Heights") as an electronics expert and Dominique Fishback ("Swarm") as an artifact researcher who both get unexpectedly thrust into "a '90s globetrotting adventure" with the Autobots and Decepticons.
"Rise of the Beasts" will introduce not only a new set of human characters but new Transformers factions as well, known as the Maximals, the Predacons, and the Terrorcons. These aliens can turn into robotic animals, and while we've seen these types of Transformers in the '90s "Beast Wars" cartoon, we're just now getting to witness them in live-action form. "There are different breeds of Transformers," director Steven Caple Jr. told The Hollywood Reporter. "In our particular film, they are...

To paraphrase Dan Olson’s excellent Nft video essay Line Goes Up, we’re going to have to deal with a lot of vocabulary and a lot of complexity in this review. Some of it will fill some of you with a nostalgic glow and some of it will sound like white noise and make your head hurt. What you do need to know is that you don’t need to know or care about any of it. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is going to rock on regardless so you might as well enjoy the ride.
You wouldn’t like planet-munching big bad Unicron (Colman Domingo) when he’s hangry. He has a tendency to wipe out civilisations. Elon Musk welcomed Twitter’s new CEO into the fold as he held court at Tesla’s annual meeting in Austin today, sounding genuinely relieved to offload some of the burden of running the beleaguered social media company he reluctantly acquired last fall.
“I’m excited to have Linda Yaccarino. I think Linda is going to do a great job running Twitter,” he said of the former NBC Universal advertising chief who joined several days ago. He was responding to a question by a shareholder who asked, “Human to human, how are you?”
“Sometimes the work pain level is quite excruciating, and on top of that I get dumped on by the press, so it’s not exactly super,” Musk responded. “There was a short-term distraction because I had to do some major open-heart surgery on Twitter to save the patient. I think Twitter is in a stable place.”
He added,...

For the past few months, Pete Davidson and Chase Sui Wonders have stayed mum about their rumored romance - until now. In an interview with Nylon, published on May 9, Wonders not only confirmed that she's currently dating the comedian but, for the first time, also shared some insight into how their relationship grew romantic after playing a couple in 2022's "Bodies Bodies Bodies."
"[Pete and I] became fast friends on 'Bodies,' and it was just clear that we could work together super well. He's such a pro, and acting with him is my favorite thing," she said. Wonders also talked about the couple's supportive partnership, adding, "We talk about everything, and we are very open with each other about everything, and it feels like what's happening in our relationship is very sacred."
Fans noticed the undeniable chemistry between Davidson and Wonders once dating speculation started, but it's much more apparent in...

Ready to rollout? The action-packed trailer for Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts_, stepping into another franchise he loves and ready to make his own mark on it.
He caught up with Empire ahead of the trailer’s release to break down the machine-on-machine mayhem – teasing his bigger plans for Unicron, the relevance of the film’s ‘90s New York setting, the bonkers brew of influences that have come together to create fresh Autobot hero Mirage, and much more. Dive in.
Pure Maximalism
You could hardly accuse the Transformers movies of being lo-fi cinema – but Rise Of The Beasts looks set to be more Maximalist than ever. By which we mean, a new breed of ‘former is dropping in for this one called the Maximals – robots not exactly in disguise, but who can turn into animals. Leading them is the gorilla-shaped Optimus Primal, voiced (as he was in 2018 cartoon Power Of The Primes) by Ron Perlman.

"The Transformers: The Movie" exists in the shadow of "Star Wars." The young Autobot Hot Rod's ascension to Rodimus Prime parallels Luke Skywalker becoming a Jedi, Arcee's head is modeled after Leia's bun hairstyle, and the film's Orson Welles-voiced villain, Unicron, is a mechanical planet that eats other planets — it's like the Death Star, but if it were a Transformer.
"Star Wars" didn't become the media franchise of the world because of its box office haul, but largely because of merchandise sales. Toy companies made a killing on "Star Wars" action figures, among them Hasbro, owner of "Transformers." Partly thanks to "Star Wars," movies and TV shows began to be designed to include characters and vehicles that could be turned into toys. "The Transformers" and its sister show, "G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero," were the epitome of this -- they were literal toy commercials disguised as cartoons,...

"Transformers: EarthSpark" is a Paramount+ original animated series that follows the eponymous robots in disguise as they work together, Autobots and (some) Decepticons alike, on a post-war Earth to protect and educate a new breed of Transformer: the Terrans. These new robots are unlike the rest in that they were born on Earth. For the Terrans, it's the only home they've ever known, and Cybertron is a distant myth. Also, there are a bunch of humans tagging along because the audience demands a surrogate. The whole thing is very "Steven Universe."
Starring everyone from Zeno Robinson and Danny Puddi to Nolan North and Clancy Brown, "Transformers: EarthSpark" is up to its antennae in famous names. One of them in particular -- Alan Tudyk, who voices Optimus Prime, the leader of the Autobots -- comes with something of a funny story. Thing is, fans of Tudyk will know that he's typically cast as comedic characters.
