- In the 1900s maverick Howard Carter is driven in his excavation of the Egyptian Valley of the Kings and, at the suggestion of American career archaeologist Maggie Lewis, approaches enthusiastic amateur Lord Carnarvon to be his sponsor. The discovery of a drinking cup and a conversation with the eccentric Flinders Petrie leads Carter to believe he is close to locating the tomb of boy king Tutankhamun and shifts the focus of his operation. However the outbreak of war sees Maggie being recalled by her patron, the American Metropolitan Museum, and Carter and Carnarvon being seconded to the British Army, thus halting their dig.—don @ minifie-1
- *Maverick English archaeologist Howard Carter's career as Egyptologist seems at a dead-end after a brutal encounter with a French duke sees his colonial authority permit withdrawn. Having spotted a doubtlessly grave-robbed statuette mentioning little-known boy pharaoh Tutankhamun at the Cairo flee market, he organizes minor digs in the Valley of the Kings. British Lord Carnarvon, an earl bored on health journey in Egypt, started blind digs without success, sees the professional and hires him, with better results. Alas, both men must join the Army due to the Great War.—KGF Vissers
