In 1991, Delphine Software was an obscure French developer, known at that point for the ravishing but deeply flawed point ‘n’ click adventure Future Wars and the spy-‘em-up Operation Stealth. With Another World, in the hands of auteur programmer Eric Chahi, they took their visual talents and movie narrative impulses to alien climes.
A wonderful introduction sequence conjures a rich atmosphere from the very start. A young scientist works late and alone. A storm rages outside. As he powers up an experimental device, lightning strikes the facility, opening a portal that whisks him away to a different planet, possibly a different dimension.
At this point there is a classic transition: you the player aren’t aware that the game has begun and that you are in control. Failure to react means death. Suddenly, you really are in another world, and the presentation is out of this world.

Starring Rachel Nichols Laura Harring Directed by Miguel Ángel Vivas While the directing duo of the cringe-inducing and original 2007 French grand guignol thriller Inside have gone on to refurbishments of their own—Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo recently helmed a retread of Leatherface’s origin story—their flick now has an American stamp on it with the […]

Horror film remakes can be a dicey proposition, with genre fans often crying out in protest of what they see as desecrations of the originals. That subset is bound to be out in force with Miguel Angel Vivas' American redo of the Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo 2007 film that was part of the so-called "New French Extremity." Despite its tense storyline involving a pregnant, partially deaf woman desperately trying to escape from a female home invader intent on taking the unborn baby, Inside somehow manages to be remarkably devoid of suspense throughout its brief running time.

For roughly the first third of 2018’s Inside, I felt sympathetic towards a remake whose original “equal” is highly regarded amongst genre crowds. Yet as plot similarities fade, freedoms from comparative shackles prove themselves to be rather trivial and unaffecting. From the director of Kidnapped (a thriller I dig) and the co-writer of [Rec] (an outbreak nightmare I adore) comes a head-scratching tale of coincidental deaths on par with neither of their previously taught accolades. Points awarded for deviating from Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury’s brutalization so noticeably, but lordy, this is some serious “scream at the screen” kind of frustration at times.

When the original The Texas Chain Saw Massacre burst onto the screen in 1974, a new horror legend was born, in the form of a mumbling, bumbling, flesh-masked, chainsaw wielding maniac – Leatherface! The directors – masters of horror Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury – are a perfect fit for the material, having shocked audiences with their 2007 gory Gallic debut Inside, described by Twitch as ‘one of the harshest, most brutal and disturbing things to hit celluloid in recent years’. Here,...

It’s hard to believe that 2018 is officially upon us, but with a new year (and month) comes brand new horror and sci-fi films arriving on VOD and various digital platforms to get genre fans through the winter doldrums. On the 2nd, the year kicks off with a bang, as we have a handful of movies making their digital debuts, including Mickey Keating’s Psychopaths, No Solicitors, Bigfoot Country, Cannibal Farm, The Rizen, and Death Island: Paranormal Retribution.
Both Day of the Dead: Bloodline and Devil’s Gate are being released on the 5th, and for those who missed playing his game in theaters this October, Jigsaw makes its digital bow on January 9th. The Inside remake is coming our way on the 12th, Happy Death Day brings home some unique slasher-fied fun on January 16th, and both Mom and Dad as well as Delirium are being digitally released on the 19th.
