Pretty decent sci-fi thriller
awfulketchup10 May 2018
The human psyche under isolation and stress can lead to a volatile state of mind. I really enjoyed the settings and use of colors in this flick.

Theres quite some psychological horror in here which kept me at the edge of my seat at times, however the acting felt underwhelming.

I wasn't really a fan of the ending either but what we have here is a decent flick to watch, it sorta reminded me of ''Moon'' which has the same settings and mystery.

You'll probably like it for what it is, but i wish there were more.

Like many of the GENUINE reviews here, I agree that the 1st 3/4 of the film was honestly done well. But, the last 20+ minutes truly could have been done better...
lathe-of-heaven22 March 2020
Okay, I can see right off that almost all of the reviews and the subsequent rating of these reviews are EXTREMELY slanted and strikes me as not being balanced and genuinely indicative of whether the film is good or worth watching.

Like ALL of the 'positive' reviews (come on... THAT many '10's..., really?) are heavily voted as 'helpful' and almost ALL of the negative reviews are voted as 'not helpful'

So, since I just finished watching the movie AND I see what I feel are all these not only disingenuous '10' reviews ("Just like Kubrick!" "Just like Ridley Scott!" Please...) and even more so, the way they were all voted up/down so extremely, I just had to at least drop my sincere thoughts about the film and just leave it at that.

I DO indeed agree with many here who stated that they did like the first 3/4 of the movie quite a bit. So did I... And, I fully agree with these ones who also state that the ending was indeed too long and overwrought. Like some of the review sites stated about this movie, it is not the ambiguity of the ending that is disappointing. Ambiguous endings WHEN DONE WELL can be great! However, to me after so carefully and painstakingly putting all the parts and angles and shots together so well, especially when working with such a static and simple setting and one person, I really feel that it just seems like a shame that the filmmakers did kind of a sloppy job on the last 20+ minutes or so. To me personally, they really should have cut out at least about 10 minutes of the ending, tightening it up. Because, just how long can you drag the audience through and sustain this emotional thing this guy is going through. And, also, in my lowly and wretched opinion, if they could have somehow just sharpened the ending somewhat, just to give it a lot more impact. So, just like many of the 'HONEST' reviewers here stated, I really did like the first 3/4 of the film and I truly felt the filmmakers put a HELL of a lot of time and work into it to make it as effective as they did. However, the dragged out, overwrought ending, to me anyway, really took a lot of the carefully and artfully built up tension and squandered it...

So, like many of the other reviewers here who apparently got the same impressions that I did from the movie, I also gave it a '5' But, I feel that with a much better constructed and shorter and sharper ending, it could very easily have been a few notches higher.

Let me get this straight..
rickt-1117 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Supposedly, a refuge for mankind's best & brightest, should the crap hit the fan. And, once said crap, hits the fan, the person who, supposedly knows how to keep the place running, has orders to go, "Topside", and die. Is he not good enough to mingle with the, best & brightest? From the title, I'm assuming it's the year 2024. The technology looks straight out of the 80's. The computer can only communicate with him through text?! It's 2019. Many people have better vocal communication with their houses, than this guy does with, this, "state-of-the-art", survival complex. From about half way through the movie, I knew how it was going to end. I just kept watching, in the hope that I was wrong.. I wasn't.

Was decent, but the ending?
wecameasromans-2392228 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Was a good movie til the end. Left you with disappointment. After the end I realized this just seemed like it was a try-hard film to get you "thinking." Too much contradiction to what the end implied. It seemed like they were trying for a "nothing is certain" kind of thought provocation, but considering the AI picked up physical anomalies then there could have been no way it was all in his mind. Could have been so much more. The AI could have become aggravated that Roy didn't see it as an intelligent being, used the technology at its disposal to create itself as something not "just wires and programming." Then the transmission and "It lives" would have had an actual point to the story, but the ending made it entirely pointless. We know he wasn't crazy at these points because of the context. It would have been fantastic if it turned out to be a simulation to "grow" an AI for the bunker and its infections came from corrupted programming and its insanity came from the idea it wasn't real. So much more could have been done.

Horrible Ending
twebb-307829 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The movie looks awesome, special effects are great, the story starts off solid, but then the ending ruins the whole movie. Nothing interesting, just another movie where loneliness drives someone insane and the whole time they are questioning their own sanity. First of all, that ending is so overdone its ridiculous. Second, it's not even realistic, crazy people don't question their own reality. Nice twist ending Shyamalan, lmao.

Awful
ufancat5 February 2017
I usually try to give films that are supposed to be scary a fair viewing - especially psychological thrillers like this one. However, I ended up having several problems with this:

1. He calls himself a scientist. Why? All we ever see him do is engineering / electrical work, not science - and since all he's supposed to be doing is preparing a bunker for habitation by the remnants of humanity, following nuclear holocaust - why would they send a scientist down there anyway, just to run maintenance?

2. This guy gets overwrought too early. Good acting would require a realistic meltdown - this guy flips too soon. And it just makes the whole film ridiculous.

3. Confusing rather than scary - I didn't understand half of what was going on, never mind the ending. Ambiguous is one thing - bonkers is quite another.

Avoid.

Did he just stop writing? Warning: Spoilers
Cut the last 25 minutes. Replace it with an ending better than "it was all a dream...OR WAS IT??" Because that's as close to a resolution as you'll get here.

As a long time fan of science fiction I enjoy speculating which trope will turn out to explain the story, and how the filmmaker will add something to the trope to make it a little original.

Absolute failure to do that here. There is no reliable narrator. Is he nuts? Is it an alien? Is he part of the computer? Is it a simulation gone wrong? Or gone right? Who knows? Who cares? Not the filmmakers, apparently.

Red herrings abound. The door? The lizard-alien glimpsed from behind? The power failure? Who cares? None of it points to resolution.

Bad science fiction. Decent thriller, if you don't need a story to go with your thrills.

Eh.
an-4733223 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
First half was great, then the dude gets a bloody mouth and it starts to go bad from there. Could have done more with the computer buddy, felt like it was leading into something crazy with the conversations they were having but just ended up run of the mill sort of drug out finale that didn't really explain anything, stupid end scene... and by the way any time someone is crawling through air duct in a movie, it's an automatic fail.

Starts off good, then you just want credits to roll
nate-552-40849227 October 2019
It started off pretty good, you know the drill; the world is gonna end, this guy is part of the Uber prepper caliphate thing, or whatever, getting ready for the end of the world in a bunker. There is a sentient computer, because of course there is, and there is a back and forth between the two. It's a solo performance and pretty good acting by Andrew, but it seems to have lost the plot after a while.

Towards the 3/4 mark it starts to turn into a cheesy haunted house ride at the state fair we all enjoyed so much when we were 8 years old. Flashing lights, fake blood, broken mirrors, you know, terror. At this point I started to get pretty bored, but I'm invested now so I've got to finish it. That last 20 or so minutes was the real torture. It seemed to drag on and on...

In short, it's what The Shining would have been if Stanley Kubrick had ADHD and refused to take his Adderall halfway through the filming of the movie.

BRILLIANT Acting and Thought Provoking Film!
sonyavar22 August 2018
There is no way you can watch this film and not think about it afterwards. It is suspenseful and keeps you guessing over and over. Andrew Kinsler's performance as Roy is fantastic and entirely convincing. He manages to go from blasé to almost hysterical and expresses each emotion in such a raw and natural manner which so many actors never quite achieve. After all, it is a one man show and takes incredible talent to keep us engaged and on edge from beginning to end.

You should watch it
MidnightCat2321 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Only reason I'm writing a review is frustration. It starts good. Colors...well a bit dull for my taste but didn't let it influence with the story. Then...gaps. Empty stares and generally no action or sense. Shots moving from one room to another, talking to AI. I may or may have not dosed off a little. But ok, maybe we are arriving at the point. Then the crazy starts. And it goes on and on and on and on. Without a break. I believe the director could have described agony without making the audience go through it. Last 30 min just watching at the clock. When will it end. As the end approaches I realize that it was shown already somewhere in the middle. But still, I think to myself, maybe I don't get it. Give it a chance to prove you wrong. And then it's the most obvious ending. What the...? Why?? All that trouble to write, act, shoot, direct, edit! And for what? It's not about interpreting the end, I would be super fine with open ending, it just seems like the easy way out. Out of like an hour of full on insanity. And where is the elevator they mention at the start? And why he couldn't open the door? And...oh it doesn't matter.

Chilling and beautifully made!
matthewbainbridge13 June 2018
Perfect blend of suspense, psychological intrigue and solid acting! This film used minimal staff to create a film worth of the big screen and big production value. The acting is fantastic and sells they story perfectly and sucks you into the intensity of the film! Highly recommended! Get this film on Netflix pronto and watch it turn into a cult classic very quickly!

Decent
paradiddle161 April 2020
It's a decent thriller maybe a little botched with some over-acting and some parts that drag a bit. I'm sure they would get back to the editing and just fix the pacing cuz it seems unequal to me. Still for something with a small budget like that, it's good work but just needs refining. Good job!

The most stupid film ever
mjjordanova6 August 2019
I cannot believe I have spend almost two hours watching this stupidity. I am trying to see anything positive but no...even I cannot say it is a horror movie. There is no sense in it, no logic, nothing worthy to understand.

Tense Psychological Thriller
JasonL8423 February 2018
An extraordinary British independent film, with unique visual style, immersive sound and disturbing music. Twenty Twenty-Four could have easily been a below average attempt at low budget sci-fi, with shiny surfaces and ambitious CGI, but it's far from it. It offers something more like Alien, with tension building scene by scene and mystery lurking around every corner. It becomes more tense as events become more strange... it's a film that makes you psychology feel isolated and trapped. I thought the acting performance was incredible - one man in a vast bunker complex with only a computer/AI console for company (Arthur). A must watch for indie film fans.

Mesmerising, Masterful and Misunderstood
elliebaker-4756910 November 2018
Let's start with the obvious. This isn't going to be a film for everyone. But for anyone who wants to be challenged by a genuinely gripping film look no further. I was recommended this by a friend who knows I like films with a psychological edge. And boy does this film have a psychological edge! In a way the premise is the least interesting thing about the film. Though I expect that may have been the point. Because this film is really about atmosphere and how it slowly cranks up the tension.

I'm not surprised this film seems to be polarising people. It takes way too many risks to be a crowdpleaser. But that's also what I admire about it. It's confident enough to take those risks regardless. This film is brilliantly directed because it uses sleight of hand to blend together several different layers all at the same time. It's intense!

And it has one of the most ambiguous endings I've ever seen. I've read a lot of people say they hate the ending because it doesn't give you answers. But for me it didn't matter. I think it's up to the viewer to fill in the blank and come to your own conclusion on what you've just watched. In fact the ending was so jaw-dropping I was thinking about it well into the next day. The experience really stayed with me. And when there's so many uninspired films on a production line these days, isn't that enough? Give it a couple of years and this will be a cult film.

Got the makings of a cult classic
tomprosser14 March 2018
I'm not usually one for these types of films, independent, low budget and only one actor. Luckily for me the viewer it doesn't come across like this at all.

The main (only) actor Andrew Kinsler is an relatively unknown but he does a great job showing the progression of the character and the break down in emotion. The journey you witness with this futuristic character is relatable and believable.

The story also holds up, sure there are questions throughout and sometimes answered aren't supplied. I imagine it to almost be a pre-quel to the video game Fallout where people are sent into vaults in order to survive but answers come later and a good thriller is rare in modern cinema.

The visual affects are strong considering the budget they must of had and the only frustration is the interactive computer that types rather than speaks. It would flow much better if the AI had a voice.

Overall though a strong film which will probably pick up traction over the next few years

Visually Stunning
tannerwadsworth25 May 2016
Twenty Twenty-Four may be the best independent film I've seen this year. The screenplay riffs ingeniously on dystopian material made famous by pioneers like Stanley Kubrick and Ridley Scott. Andrew Kinsler is remarkably relatable in his role as the scientist, especially considering that the only sidekicks he gets to play off are a talking computer and his own thoughts.

Above all, the cinematography is jaw-droppingly gorgeous. Dark, moody and stylized, every scene is a parade of deliciously creative shots. Unlike most other indie films, Twenty Twenty-Four is tightly cut together and moves along well.

The dialogue feels a bit stilted at times and the slow-burn suspense may wear out some viewers, but Twenty-Twenty Four is an unusually strong indie. I recommend it.

Impressive, immersive & unsettling
mcdowelllouise29 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Twenty Twenty-Four was an impressive blend of beauty and unease. While the editing and cinematography made every shot like a piece of art, the music score and sound left me on the edge of my seat. It was a completely immersive film - as though I had spent the past hour-and-a-half inside the bunker itself. I felt anxious from start to finish.

The overall quality was unbelievable for a low-budget independent film, from the impressive one-man acting performance of Andrew Kinsler, to the flawless cinematography. Richard Mundy's writing, directing and vision is something to be marvelled, and I have no doubt we will be seeing a lot more of his ideas in the future. Someone who can convey a complicated scene with nothing but a black screen and clever sound design, is someone to watch.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of having a crawl at the start of a film - it throws a lot of information out there straight away and most of the time it flies straight over my head. Thankfully, I grasped the film perfectly fine despite the information I might have missed.

I have always liked a story with a solid ending, so any film that ends with ambiguity leaves me somewhat frustrated. Yet Twenty Twenty-Four left me intrigued, and I wanted to sit and watch from the start again straight away to test my theories. Although, because of the unease and anxiety I felt throughout, I'm not sure I could've handled it!

TOUR-DE-FORCE all the way!
Enrique-Sanchez-566 July 2018
I can't say enough about this movie, primarily, of course, the tour-de-force performance by ANDREW KINSLER! All throughout the movie, it keeps me guessing what is going on. I was dearly hoping the ending would not be prosaic. And it met my standards for a modern movie to a "T". This is one outstanding thriller of the mind... It couldn't be more perfect. I congratulate Richard Mundy for truly horrifying experience. There's more that I could write, but it's enough to say you hunger for psychological horror, this is IT.

Awesome Performance
gwade-2152613 August 2019
Twenty-Twenty-Four gives a masterful performance by Andrew Kinsler encapsulating a great range of emotions with his one man performance.

The cinematography was moody and realistic with its style and definitely sets its self apart from other sci-fi indie films

I recommend it!

With space cake it's even better.
deloudelouvain4 June 2020
This is one of those movies my wife and I disagree about. I liked it a lot more than she did. Maybe the fact I had some of the finest edibles before made me enjoy the cinematography more. To me it was sometimes visually stunning, much better than I was expecting. But not only the cinematography was a delight to watch, also the acting of the only actor Andrew Kinsler. I never heard of him but he did a very convincing job playing his character. The story itself starts slow, with some intriguing elements, but the more the story advances the more you want to know what will happen. There is some suspense, beautifully amplified by an excellent soundtrack. A psychological sci-fi thriller I can only recommend. To me it was one of the better indies I watched lately, strangely not to my wife.
