British director Charlotte Wells has brought her first feature, Aftersun, to Cannes and has a big hit on her hands. Appearing in the sidebar Critics’ Week section, Aftersun has become one of the most talked about and beloved films of the festival. And rightly so.
Starring Paul Mescal as a young dad Calum and Francesca Corio making an extraordinary debut as his eleven-year-old daughter Sophie, the film is essentially a two-hander. The action takes place during a cheap package holiday in Turkey at some time in the 1990s, although there are also occasional trips to the present.
Calum and Sophie make a great team. There is constant joshing (‘Dad’s 130 and going to be 131 tomorrow’), but the two also watch out for each other, the after sun of the title being diligently applied every evening. There is so much love, too. After a phone call to Sophie’s mum – Calum...

“I wanted to be one of the best — that was my wish,” Nigerian drum legend Tony Allen said on the Trap Set podcast during a 2015 interview. “To be the best, it’s not when you are doing the same thing with others…. To be the best means I have to find a way to put something on the road, create something that wasn’t there, for other people to learn from.”
Few would dispute that Allen, who died Thursday at age 79, lived up to his objective. When he joined up...

Cape Town, South Africa native David S.F. Wilson makes his feature directorial debut with Bloodshot, the new Vin Diesel action/sci-fi thriller based on the superhero character created by Valiant Comics. After launching a visual effects company in his native country with Sharlto Copley (who has gone on to success as an actor in movies like District 9 and Maleficent), Wilson was recruited by future Deadpool and Terminator: Dark Fate director Tim Miller to come work at his Blur Studio effects and animation house in Venice, California.
After rising to Creative Director there, Wilson has now made the leap to the world of features with Bloodshot. Diesel stars as Ray Garrison, a soldier whose shattered body is resurrected and enhanced by “nanites,” microscopic intelligent machines invented by the head of the secretive Rising Spirit Technologies, Dr. Emil Harting (Guy Pearce). One of a number of humans shaped by Harting’s creation,...

Riddle me this: when is the last time we saw a just plain over-the-top villainous performance from a comedian at the top of his game? I made it pretty obvious, but my go-to answer for that schoolyard question would have to be Jim Carrey as the Riddler in 1995’s Batman Forever. He’s set to play a similar type of villain as Doctor Robotnik in the upcoming, beleaguered Sonic the Hedgehog next month though and he’s been feeling fondly towards these two characters as of late, indicating that they should one day team up.
The eccentric comedian sat down for an interview recently, undoubtedly there to plug the Blue Blur’s upcoming exploits. And when asked about any direct similarities between the Riddler and Robotnik, Carrey spouted quite wise, as he’s wan to do:
“Well, I think I think they’re both basically spinning. They’re both spinning in the tree of knowledge.

George Michael was a music icon to millions and a superstar across the globe, but to heartbroken ex-partner Kenny Goss, he was also just an ordinary guy who was happiest watching daytime TV and walking labradors Hippie, Mo Mo, Meg and Abby. Talking exclusively to The Sun in aid of the charitable Goss-Michael Foundation, the 58 year-old Texan lifted the lid on the extraordinary times he shared with Michael during their 13-year relationship, touching on such heart-wrenching issues as Michael’s drug abuse, multiple arrests and tragic Christmas Day death.
