This is a good episode in the sense that it begins a new arc while also tying up the drama between the brothers and their mother, its a bit weaker in terms of it being a bit melodramatic and repeating certain things we know already, the plot twist was okay though we all knew that juilian would still be around longer.

So Mary-Louise can unlink them by herself, why didn't they just get Julian's blood to Valerie and have her do the unlinking? How was ML able to unlink without Lily's blood? Why did Damon have to be watching the trapped Julian when there are four witches (not counting Bonnie) who could've trapped him to the chair magically, and they could've vervained him unconscious until the unlinking was complete (cause they didn't know ML did it already)? Why couldn't any of those witches have magicked the splinters out of her heart? If the splinters didn't kill her instantly then they had time to do that. And why oh why would you show Lily at the beginning of the episode three years later and then have her die and then have the Lily from three years revealed to be a hallucination? I personally thought Damon was just vervained and didn't even think of werewolf venom and hallucinations. It just made Lily's death scene and Damon's last words to her less poignant. I hate these tiny plot holes. They just scream lazy writing in a series that started out phenomenally. But I guess this is CW's MO.
