Feels Like Genuine DnD
I figured it would be neat to review the episodes as I go as a first time watcher. I have DMed Tabletop RPGs for a decade now, but I've never really consumed DnD podcasts or recorded games. I have however played the excellent video games like the Baldur's Gate series and Planescape, and read the Drizzt books. I have been aware of Critical Role since its inception (since it came about pretty soon after I started DMing), but I've never given it a shot. I always worried it would be too long of something to commit to and that the magic of playing would not be present in watching... But I was wrong.
This gives the feeling of being over at a close-knit group of friends session, listening in but not playing. The energy is palpable and charming. Everyone seems excited and in love with Tabletop RPGs and just having a good time. There are some growing pains, a little bit of awkwardness at being filmed, but the fact this started as a genuine campaign for many sessions before it was a podcast is actually a boon. I can see how some could be disappointed by this being in the middle of a campaign, but it allowed for this group to be confident and comfortable with each other and makes unforgettable dynamics. Everyone at the table is likeable, both in person, and in character... With one exception...
Orion from this episode is very clearly the problem player, I recognized it immediately and was unsurprised to see that he left the show partway through. I had flashbacks of my own problem players I've DMed.
Overall this is a great introduction though. Warning: There are some audio issues, twice where the audio becomes genuinely loud and frayed, but they last for no more than a couple of minutes, and there is a little bit of trouble hearing when everyone is speaking at once (though there are handmade subtitles on YouTube which also list the speaker's name, highly recommend using them!). But in general, this episode is fun. It feels like genuine DnD. The voice-acting is amazing, the DM is amazing and spirited, the descriptions lively and vivid. Just all around great. I do recommend it, though start with the, "Story of Vox Machina Fansub", on YouTube for a bit of a starter on the backstory.
