Fat Tony's name is revealed as Marion D'Amico. This is not a goof, seeing as Anthony "Fat Tony" D'Amico died earlier in the series. Marion took over for Anthony in the same episode or it could be he changed his first name from Anthony to Marion.
The title is a reference to the ESPN documentary series "30 for 30".
While fighting with Homer on the court, Bart says, "I'm taking my talents to Shelbyville". This is an homage to the 2010 statement of LeBron James when he moved from Cleveland to Miami: "I'm taking my talents to South Beach ..."
Homer plays Bart's coach in this episode. During the games Homer chews on a towel. This pokes fun at Jerry Tarkanian, a former coach at UNLV that famously chewed on towels during games.
As of 2022 "22 For 30" is the newest available episode in the series that can still be watched on dvd as its included as an extra on the season 18 dvd set. There have been no more dvd sets released after season 20 although that may change in the future.
