Sometimes the crew of the Calypso seem amazingly stupid....this episode clearly is one of those times!
I loved seeing this episode of "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau" because I was so familiar with almost all the species the Calypso crew encountered. I often see Porkfish, Stingrays, Barracuda, Parrotfish, Grouper as well as Loggerhead and Green turtles like I saw in the show. But what I hated about the show is that the divers OFTEN did things you were told NEVER to do while diving...and some of it was pretty stupid! Again and again, they stroked or grabbed fish and one rode on a turtle! What's a lot worse is what they did when they encountered sharks. They touched the sharks...which is NOT a good idea ever. What's worse is that in addition to doing this to Nurse Sharks, they began touching a Bull Shark--one of the most dangerous (if not the most dangerous) creatures you could possibly find in the Caribbean!! These fish are nasty and are the most dangerous of the sharks...and these knuckle- heads are trying to grab or stroke them!!! I felt as if they should have posted a huge warning "Kids: Don't Try This At Home!!" at the beginning of the show!!
Apart from featuring some really dumb behaviors of the crew, the show is well worth seeing simply because these waters along the Yucatan are among the most beautiful you could ever see. Seeing the drivers going through a thick school of Grunts is pretty amazing and the fish are lovely.
By the way, if you do watch, you'll notice that Philippe Cousteau and his PBY seaplane are prominently featured in the show. Only four years later, Philippe would be killed in a crash with this same plane...and knowing this made me a bit sad as I watched.
