Santa Fe, N.M. — Joel Souza, the writer and director of “Rust,” told a jury on Friday about getting shot while filming a scene in an old Western church with Alec Baldwin in October 2021.
He said he heard a deafening bang, and that it “felt like somebody had taken a baseball bat to my shoulder.”
He stumbled backwards, dropped to his knees, and ended up lying on the floor, screaming in pain. He could see blood on the back of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who was mortally wounded. He also recalled Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the film’s armorer, coming into the church and apologizing.
“She looked distraught,” Souza said. “I remember her saying, ‘I’m sorry. I’m sorry, Joel.” And I remember somebody just screaming at her and they just ushered her out.”
Gutierrez Reed is on trial for involuntary manslaughter in Hutchins’ death, and is accused of negligently loading...

Three years after it was first announced and almost 18 months after the fatal shooting of its cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set, the Alec Baldwin-starring Western Rust has returned to the Cannes market.
The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Goodfellas — formerly Wild Bunch International — is selling the project, taking over from Highland Film Group who originally launched it in the virtual Marché in 2000.
Rust sees Baldwin an infamous outlaw who comes out of hiding to stop his 13-year-old grandson from being hanged for murder. Joel Souza, who teamed with Baldwin on Crown Vic, directs from a story they both conceived.
However, Rust is now better known for the incident on Oct. 21, 2021 in Bonanza Creek Ranch near Santa Fe, in which a revolver Baldwin was holding discharged, killing Hutchins and injuring Souza. The tragic incident saw the production shut down, a major legal battle erupt over who held responsibility for...

For Ashley Walters, life has had its ups and downs. Now, ahead of a new season of Top Boy – not to mention directing and musical projects – the pieces are finally falling into place. He talks to Tim Lewis about loyalty, prison – and his new life on the Kent coast
Ashley Walters has noticed that, much as day slides into night, his greatest career triumphs are followed, often at alarming speed, by his most humbling derailments. He arrived in the early 2000s as a rapper, Asher D, with the 30-strong London garage collective So Solid Crew. He was a lead vocalist on their No 1 hit 21 Seconds, and they won a Brit award in 2002, a prize perhaps overshadowed by the altercation they had with the Irish boyband Westlife’s table on the way up to collect it. A month later, aged 19, Walters was convicted of possession of a converted air pistol loaded...

A documentary chronicling the experiences of disgraced actor Noel Clarke is in the works at Channel 4, Variety has confirmed.
Sources indicate that a project in early development at the “It’s a Sin” broadcaster will look to explore the events surrounding Clarke in the last year, though it’s still unclear what the exact angle or treatment will be.
A spokesperson for Channel 4 told Variety: “Channel 4 has not commissioned the documentary. It is in the early stages of development and as part of this process, the production company has started approaching a number of potential participants.”

Like the one before it, 2021 was a year in which many of us saw more of our TVs than of our friends and loved ones. It was lucky then, that there was so bloody much of the stuff, despite the pandemic’s best efforts to shut it all down. They might have been delayed, they might have been curtailed, but they weren’t stopped. Returning British TV shows returned like spring lambs, gambolling over the horizon right into your living room.
There was comedy and drama, as well as crime thrillers by the lorryload, and sci-fi and fantasy coming by the… much smaller lorryload.

Based on Deborah Harkness’ All Souls trilogy about the forbidden love between a powerful witch and a centuries-old vampire, A Discovery Of Witches debuted on Sky in autumn 2018 (read our reviews here) and was renewed for series two and three almost straight away.

Comcast had announced plans this summer to launch Peacock as a free add-on for Sky’s satellite TV customers in Europe, representing a base of close to 20 million households. Sky TV customers and subscribers to the Now Entertainment package in the U.K. and Ireland will get “early access” to the new ad-supported Peacock destination, with original and library TV shows and movies from across NBCU although the content availability will differ from what’s available on Peacock in the U.

There’s a truly startling sequence beginning about a half hour into Todd Chandler’s unsettling, formally assured documentary on school violence, Bulletproof. Until this point Chandler, with cool, distanced precision, depicts the “capitalist spectacle” that has grown around the issue of violence in schools. Active shooter drills, teachers given firearms training, a first-generation immigrant starting a business producing Kevlar hoodies, and a Las Vegas trade show where high-tech surveillance equipment and classroom accessories like bulletproof whiteboards are hawked to school board purchasers — the parallels between this education/security industrial complex and our post 9/11 security state, where weaponry and advanced surveillance co-mingle, […]

“It’s war. You’re going to see the wounds of war.”
This grave warning comes from a gun-safety-training officer who, with a team of others, is in the business of training teachers to prepare for the likely possibility of an armed intruder to their classroom. It’s with a chilling, overtly masculine “ooh-rah” cadence that these muscle-ripped crisis-prevention officers attempt to prepare teachers (already terrified) to adopt a new mindset with out-of-context Bible verses and nonsense like “love is the opposite of fear” to discourage panic and encourage shooting to kill. It all fits with the rhetoric that this is somehow a natural fit with their job description, seemingly director Todd Chandler’s primary focus. His unmoving camera, no doubt echoing the tone of Gus Van Sant’s Elephant, shows how normalized all this has become without ever trying to tack on any extra sense of pomp or sensationalism.

Exclusive: Popcornflix, the streaming service owned by Crackle parent Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, has acquired its first original documentary feature, Hollywood Bulldogs: The Rise and Falls of the Great British Stuntman.
The colorful portrait (watch the trailer above), explores major 1970s and 1980s franchises like James Bond, Indiana Jones, Superman, Star Wars, Rambo and more. Instead of the well-trod stories you may have heard, the accounts of the tight-knit group of British stuntmen who brought them to life take center stake. Ray Winstone, known for his performances in Sexy Beast and The Departed, narrates the film, which will begin streaming on the free, ad-supported Popcornflix next Monday. (Britbox debuted it in the UK last summer.)
Jon Spira, the film’s director, called it “a movie for people who love action movies and can’t get enough of them,” noting that it is “the first time many of these...

Bulletproof, a new documentary on US schools in the era of mass shootings, traces a horrific, absurd, and mundane status quo
Bulletproof, a sly, sharp-eyed documentary on US school safety in the era of mass shootings, traces a horrific and absurd status quo. A lockdown drill at an everywhere high school, students crouched under desks, in corners. A tracking badge system for a district in Texas City, Texas, which shows administrators every person’s exact location on campus; a first-grade teacher in Colorado learning to shoot a gun so she can protect her “kiddos”; a department head displaying his district’s 22 Ar-15s, since “being in the tactical field myself I understand the importance of superior firepower.” Cut to high-schoolboys playing basketball, a homecoming game, cheerleading practice, banter on the bleachers.

The silence about Noel Clarke’s alleged misdemeanors was part of a “cultural issue,” something which is being actively redressed, says Zai Bennett, MD of content, Sky U.K. and Ireland.
As revealed by Variety, “Bulletproof,” starring Clarke, was canceled at Sky after multiple sexual misconduct allegations emerged about him. Clarke has vehemently denied all allegations.
Speaking at an Edinburgh TV Festival discussion on Thursday, Bennett said, “We have a zero tolerance policy across all these areas as of course everyone does and should have. I think the thing that’s saddening and that we’ve been working on as an industry is that culturally there were absolutely procedures in place, and that people could complain. For quite a few years, we’ve had our Sky listeners number put on every call sheet on all of our scripted productions. But nobody caught it and nobody complained.”

I think it’s fair to say that when Frederick Wiseman directed High School in 1968 he wouldn’t have expected the modern version of education with its prevalence of technology and virtual teaching. Charles Guggenheim, too, who in 1984 also made a documentary titled High Schools, that time an Oscar nominee, surely could not have perceived of metal detectors and mass field trips for teachers dressed in chinos to shooting ranges where they learn how to shoot an armed gunman.
But 50 years after Wiseman captured debates over skirt length and observed awkward sexual education classes, Homeroom and Bulletproof both offer very contemporary looks at what it is like to be a student in 2021...

Noel Clarke is officially out from his production company, Unstoppable Film and TV, following multiple sexual misconduct and bullying allegations that emerged against the British actor this spring.
A spokesperson for “Fleabag” superindie All3Media, which backed Unstoppable in 2018, tells Variety: “Noel Clarke has left Unstoppable Film and TV. Jason Maza has also left the company.”
The Discovery and Liberty Global-owned All3Media began investigating Clarke immediately after an investigation by British newspaper The Guardian was published in late April. He was swiftly suspended from his company, alongside Maza, who ran the company with Clarke.
Clarke and Maza formed Unstoppable in 2007, and produced over 10 feature films, including “Brotherhood,” “10×10” and “The Fight.” The company also co-produced Sky’s buddy cop comedy “Bulletproof,” starring Clarke and Ashley Walters. The Comcast-backed broadcaster officially canceled the show in late May, as revealed by Variety.

Cannes We Dig It?
Yes, we can: It’s actually happening, Tom Grater reports. After an unprecedented 26-month gap, Cannes Film Festival returns next Tuesday, and it won’t look like any edition that has come before. Firstly, international travel remains a challenge. The U.S. is on France’s “green list,” which for vaccinated travelers should keep entry barriers to a minimum, though Deadline spoke to people this week who were still unclear how they would demonstrate their vaccinated status due to the lack of a Qr code on the U.S. vax card.

Exclusive: The BBC has halted work on an adaptation of Alex Wheatle’s book Crongton Knights after producer Noel Clarke was accused of sexual misconduct.
Deadline understands that Clarke’s Unstoppable Film & Television had the rights to the youth novel and was developing the project with the BBC.
The British broadcaster has now paused the adaptation after The Guardian published claims from more than 20 women about Clarke’s alleged inappropriate behavior. Clarke vehemently denies wrongdoing.
A BBC spokeswoman told Deadline: “We are not progressing any projects with Noel Clarke at this time.”
Crongton Knights centers on McKay, who has experienced the hardship of his mother’s death and his father working all hours to keep the bailiffs from the door.
Having strayed off his turf on a mission to help out a girl, McKay finds himself facing a friend’s crazy ex-boyfriend, a group of kids on a power trip,...

The “Bulletproof” Season 3 finale on The CW was full of holes — ratings-wise, at least. Up much higher in the Nielsen rankings, CBS won Monday with the tipoff of March Madness 2021’s Elite 8 round. As if “Bulletproof’s” 0.1 rating wasn’t rough enough, the show that followed it, “All American Stories,” had a 0.0 rating. NBC and ABC tied for second place in ratings in a battle of singing competitions, “The Voice” and “American Idol.” It was about as tight as it gets in the key demo, adults 18-49, but “The Voice” triumphed over “Idol” in terms of total viewers.
