Although Constable Crabtree is said to have pleaded nolo contendere, this is not a recognized plea in Canadian jurisprudence.
The plea of "nolo contendere" (lit. "I will not contest it"), is an answer of "no contest" by a defendant who does not admit guilt. While such a plea subjects him or her to conviction, it does not preclude him or her from denying the charge in a later action.
This episode takes place in 1903.
