- When Chief Boden takes parental leave to take care of his baby-born and arrange his father's affairs, he is replaced by Pat Pridgen. Interim Chief Pridgen is completely different from Chief Boden. He talks to Severide in private and would like him to work for him and spy on the other members of the squad but Severide refuses as he considers 51 a family and does not accept any compromise. The squad resents Pridgen's jokes that are usually offensive, especially for Otis. Pridgen has nicknamed him Gutterball and brings him a tee-shirt with the nickname embroidered on it, intending to force Otis to wear it. Otis is humiliated and tension becomes higher in the precinct. Pridgen continues his bullying until his ex-wife Beth arrives for him to sign the final documents of their divorce. Beth came on purpose to meet Casey with whom she had an occasional encounter some nights before. Unaware of her relationship with their interim Chief, once Casey discovers the truth he becomes more cautious. He is preoccupied this could lead to serious problems and decides to interrupt any relationship with Beth who, on the contrary, is very keen on him. She tries to kiss him when he is on his fire brigade truck and the scene is observed by Tommy Welch, an unwelcome new member of the squad who is momentarily replacing Newhaven, away with his daughter in San Diego. Brett has made friends with Celia, a girl she saved some days before. She has bought her a new guitar but the girl's mother rudely rejects Brett's friendship so Celia visits Brett at the precinct to play the guitar whenever she wants. Cruz appreciates Brett and their relationship becomes stronger. An emergency call forces all the squad to run to a dangerous situation in a block of flats. Pridgen changes the order of the squads to put the teams to the test. Dawson, Hermann, and Otis save all the people, but Otis makes a mistake when he tries to put out the fire as a door locks behind him, and his colleagues have to intervene in order to save him. After Pridgen bullies Otis again, Casey snaps at him and voices his discontent with his management. As a result, both Casey and Severide are punished and have to clean the windows outside while the temperature is dropping at ten below zero with freezing winds blowing. While they are cleaning the windows they see Welch talking to Dawson and Casey understands he told her about his relationship with Beth. Dawson is taken by surprise and runs away in shock.
