In his 2019 breakout feature, And Then We Danced, Swedish writer-director Levan Akin examined gay self-discovery and defiant sexuality against the rigid gender codes of a traditional Georgian dance company. His warmly humanistic new film, Crossing, explores another story of queer identity in an unaccommodating environment, this time using an odd-couple journey to advocate for trans acceptance. Observed with granular detail and imbued with a pulsing sense of place, this novelistic drama takes time to connect its central triangle but does so with a suppleness and restraint that amplify the emotional rewards of its lovely open-ended conclusion.
That sense of place applies to two principal settings as well as the sprawling space in between. It opens in Batumi, on the rocky Black Sea coast of southwest Georgia, and then shifts to the teeming streets and crumbling apartment blocks of Istanbul’s high-density, low-income quarters, where the title expands beyond geographical borders...

Visiting Istanbul, you can’t help but notice all of the cats: The Turkish metropolis is swarming with strays, some gorgeous and friendly, others haggard and more stand-offish. Entire films have been made about the phenomenon (of which “Kedi” was an especially popular example). But what of the countless other souls — the human ones — who also live on the margins of this modern city? They too are invisible until noticed. But if you look closely, it becomes impossible to unsee the homeless children and street sellers, sex workers and immigrants, many of them struggling to survive.
With “Crossing,” writer-director Levan Akin wants to open our eyes to the easily overlooked. After earning international acclaim with Cannes-selected queer drama “And Then We Danced,” Akin makes a calculated choice to raise awareness of the trans community in Istanbul, but he does so through representation rather than manipulation. “Crossing” tells the engaging if...

Animated programming is having quite a moment right now, with more offerings than ever that encompass all genres and are for all types of audiences. The creatives behind five of the biggest contenders for Emmys in animation joined our recent Meet the Experts panel. They included shows about a class struggle based on a popular video game, a workplace spy-comedy, an anthology set in a world of manufactured superheroes, a musical set against a New York landmark and an exploration of what inspired people currently working as animators.
In our roundtable discussion, we hear what these showrunners and animators have to say about the works that inspired them, the biggest misconceptions about animation and the most recent animated work that left a deep impression on them. Gold Derby recently talked about this with Christian Linke (“Arcane”), Casey Willis (“Archer”), Simon Racioppa (“The Boys Presents: Diabolical”), Steven Davis (“Central Park”) and...

Drive-By Truckers recall their early days as a bar band — under the name of Adam’s House Cat — in the wryly nostalgic trip “Welcome 2 Club Xii.” It’s a song torn from the pages of their own experience, when Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley struggled to keep the attention of hair-metal fans during bad opening-slot gigs.
“Sidewinders in spandex/the parking lot is packed…meanwhile Adam’s House Cat is the opening act/with train songs and ‘People Who Died,’” Hood sings, nodding to the Jim Carroll Band song the band still covers today.

Warning: Spoilers for the “Upload” Season 2 Finale Follow Below
The second season of Amazon Prime Video’s sci-fi comedy series “Upload” ended on a massive cliffhanger, setting up a potentially even more exciting Season 3.
Season 2 of the show found Nathan (Robbie Amell) and Nora (Andy Allo) working together to stop a dastardly plan that would see lower-income people in swing states targeted for free uploading via Freeyond, which would subsequently disenfranchise poorer voters and swing those swing states towards the wealthy and powerful.
This plan was seemingly being coordinated by David Choak (William B. Davis), a wealthy man living in Lake View next to Nathan who’s still pulling strings despite being uploaded. In a last-ditch effort to stop the dastardly plan, Nathan and Nora hijack Nathan’s new body being grown in the real world by Ingrid (Allegra Edwards) and download him into this new body.

Not a nadir in recent horror cinema, but well below average — and sea level — “The Cellar” is a logy contraption whose basic elements seem all too obviously determined by international co-production requirements, rather than any internal logic. Toplining scream queen Elisha Cuthbert as a mother who unwittingly moves her family into a house of supernatural peril, this West Ireland-shot thriller, made in conjunction with Belgian interests, is technically polished. But writer-director Brendan Muldowney’s latest lacks the thick atmospherics that might have punched across a sketchy screenplay, which falls short in expanding the premise of his 2004 short “The Ten Steps.” Rlje Films is releasing this SXSW premiere to North American theaters on April 15, simultaneous with its streaming launch on Shudder.
Muldowney’s ten-minute short is basically recycled as a first act here, with a tad more setup. Married advertising professionals Keira (Cuthbert) and Brian (Eoin Macken) have moved to a...

Zoë Kravitz’s Saturday Night Live debut featured a quick appearance from her The Batman co-star Paul Dano.
In the latest Please Don’t Destroy segment, Ben Marshall, John Higgins and Martin Herlihy prepare to gift host Kravitz with a special token of their appreciation – a cat. It’s a proper gift for Kravitz, who stars as Catwoman in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, opposite Robert Pattinson.
More From Zoë Kravitz Hosting ‘Saturday Night Live’
But just as Kravitz enters the room, the feline runs out of sight, sending everyone in the room into a frenzy. They all turn the room upside down, tearing and wrecking everything in their path to find the cat. They do find a furry friend in a drawer, but slowly close it back up after seeing an adorable dachshund.
As they’re searching, Herlihy searches the underside of a couch where he says a man is hiding.

Kino Lorber continues its alliance with niche market video label Scorpion Releasing with a Blu-ray edition of the largely forgotten 1969 action/adventure flick "The Devil's 8". The film typifies the kind of movie that simply doesn't exist any more: a low-budget production designed for fast playoff and modest profits. Back in the day, studios depended on movies such as these to be important to their bottom line. It's in stark contrast to today's film industry where seemingly every release is intended to be a blockbuster with production costs so high that some flicks have to gross close to a billion dollars to be considered financially successful. "The Devil's 8" is pretty much what you might expect simply by examining the sleeve. Typical of these types of movies, it presents a cast of reputable character actors who get meatier roles than they usually did in more prestigious productions. The script...

When there’s casting news about an upcoming superhero movie, the hoped response is something along the lines of a fist pump and some level of, “Hey, awesome!” You’re always going to hit on a character somebody’s interested in. I mean, I for one was excited about Vin Diesel as Bloodshot until I actually watched the movie. There were certainly enough Jack Kirby fans psyched about Eternals. People were hyped about John Cena as Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad the moment he was announced.
But when news hit that Dakota Johnson is set to star in a movie about Madame Web? That’s the kind of news that has you pause for a moment before asking, “Really? Are you sure?” Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe somebody out there did a backflip over this news. The rest of us are just scratching our heads, because…what in the world?...

It’s the trailer that broke the internet. The first Spider-Man: No Way Home sizzle footage, which ended with the familiar sight of Alfred Molina strapped to four mechanical arms, was viewed more than 355 million times in its first 24 hours on the web, setting a Guinness world record. When Molina’s iconic Doctor Octopus (or Doc Ock) smiled, “Hello, Peter,” the whole world smiled right back.
Despite it being nearly 20 years since Molina last played Doc Ock in a movie—way back when Tobey Maguire was still Spider-Man and George W. Bush was only in his first term as President of the United States—the excitement audiences had at seeing the not-so-good doctor up to no damn good was palpable. Part of this, of course, is due to the fan theory that if Molina is coming back, then Maguire probably will too (although that isn’t confirmed). But even without Maguire,...

Carole Baskin is suing Netflix for using footage of her in the upcoming “Tiger King 2” series.
Baskin and her husband, Howard Baskin, filed suit in Tampa, Fla. on Monday against the streamer and production company Royal Goode Productions. According to the documents, obtained by Variety, Baskin alleges that Royal Goode Productions has breached contract by continuing to use footage of her and her husband in “Tiger King 2,” since they only signed appearance release forms for the first documentary. Netflix declined to comment on the matter.
“Understanding that the Appearance Releases limited Royal Goode Productions’ use of the footage of the Baskins and Big Cat Rescue to the single, initial documentary motion picture, the Baskins believed that any sequel – though odious – would not include any of their footage,” the document reads, also stating that the Baskins were surprised to see that footage of them was used in the trailer for “Tiger King 2.

Of all the locations one could possibly choose to stage modern relationship movies, cramped apartments surely rank as just about the least cinematic option. But that hasn’t stopped Swiss helmer Ramon Zürcher (“The Strange Little Cat”) from willingly embracing such boxy, where-to-place-the-camera confines yet again for his second feature, “The Girl and the Spider,” or from concocting clever ways to use such spaces to reveal the inner lives of his characters. Zürcher’s movies are like prisms, capturing the things people do when they think no one’s watching … and when they desperately wish they were.

When it comes to Netflix’s Top 10 most-watched list, there are a few things that you can usually find there no matter when you take a look at the chart. The first is obviously anything involving Adam Sandler in any capacity, the second is whatever high-profile original project has been recently released by the streamer, and for some reason, the third is wholly mediocre B-tier action movies.
For instance, Bruce Willis’ recent output has brought us one stinker after another, but his films typically perform well on the streaming service when they arrive. Marauders was in the Top 10 for a while, and although viewers probably instantly regretted their decision to check out Hard Kill, it still managed to attract a lot of eyeballs on Netflix. Meanwhile, Dwayne Johnson’s Skyscraper has been another big hit recently, but there’s also another actioner that’s dominating the charts right now and...

It’s been a weird and often devastating year, and our social media has reflected that. Tumblr has just released its top fandoms of 2020 and it’s fascinating to see how a year of pandemic and quarantine has affected transformative fandom and broader cultural trends. In a year when almost everyone spent a lot more time at home, Animal Crossing: New Horizons was the most blogged about topic on the social media platform, followed by animated dramedy Steven Universe, Belgian Skam adaptation WtFOCK, K-pop supergroup BTS, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. We talked to Tumblr’s Trend Expert Amanda Brennan about how she interpreted the biggest trends of the year, how this was a big year for animation and international media, and why 2020 was the year everyone stopped worrying about what was cool and just embraced what they love. But, first, some 2020 Tumblr statistics:

Bill Callahan and Bonnie “Prince” Billy have continued their cover series with Steely Dan’s “Deacon Blues,” with Bill MacKay lending a hand.
Directed by Michael Tully, the clip features a woman finding change on the ground, guzzling Gatorade, and eventually watching projections of Callahan and Billy on a house. They perform the Aja track across acoustic guitar: “Learn to work the saxophone/I play just what I feel/Drink Scotch whiskey all night long/And die behind the wheel.”
“Party got busted,” Billy said of the cover. “All clear.

Sony Pictures is reportedly in talks with director J.C. Chandor to helm a movie based around the Marvel Comics villain Kraven the Hunter, according to Deadline. If this goes forward, it would make Kraven the third Spider-Man villain to make the jump to a solo movie after Venom and next year’s Morbius.
Chandor is a name that should be familiar to a certain type of movie fan. His previous films include his debut, Margin Call, as well as the highly acclaimed All is Lost with Robert Redford and the outstanding A Most Violent Year, the latter being an A24 release that starred Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain. His most recent effort, Triple Frontier, debuted on Netflix last year with a cast that included Isaac, Ben Affleck, Charlie Hunnam and Pedro Pascal.

This Penny Dreadful: City of Angels review contains spoilers.
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Episode 9
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels episode 9, “Sing, Sing, Sing,” is, for the most part, a celebration, but not because of any anti-fascist resistance or solved crime. Last week’s cat and mouse game didn’t catch itself a canary. Tonight’s episode opens where last week’s left off. Detectives Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) and Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane) are licking their wounds after a machine gun ambush sidetracked their takedown. Michener is most pissed about the loss of his classic V-12 car and he’s running on all pistons.
The standoff between Michener and Richard Goss (Thomas Kretschmann) is a joy to behold. There are so many layers to it, beyond the enormously satisfying dialogue. Michener’s a Jew in a restricted club, which has to be fun for Lane to play going in.

Hong Kong film releases are classified into three main categories: Category I, II (which is further divided into two) and III. Category III (usually called by its abridged name Cat III) is the equivalent of something like Nc-17 in America, where people under 18 are strictly not allowed due to the depiction of nudity, sex or extreme violence. Of the many, many Cat III works released, probably the most infamous is Herman Yau’s “The Untold Story” from 1993. Despite its restrictive rating, it went on to be a hit at the box office and earned lead actor Anthony Wong a Best Actor nomination and his first win at the Hong Kong Film Awards, before going on its way to become a notorious cult classic.
The story opens in Hong Kong, 1978, as we see an argument between two gamblers over a debt, with one violently killing the other by...

Amazon Prime’s new releases in June 2020 is fairly lacking in original material. That’s to be expected for a streaming service that focuses on quality over quantity to begin with now going through a pandemic content crunch.
Standup special Gina Brillon: The Floor Is Lava, Joseph Gordon-Levitt film 7500, and Pete the Cat season 2 are the only originals arriving this month. And that’s fine as Amazon is about to be home to one of 2019’s most fun films. That’s right – Knives Out makes its debut on June 12. It might be awhile before we get to see the next Benoit Blanc mystery so hopefully this will tide us over.
June 1 also sees the arrival of Dirty Dancing, Kingpin, and the tragically underrated Sex Drive. It’s not the most impressive month Amazon has ever had, but at least you still get free shipping.

Call it what you will – Hollywood hubris, avant-garde self-reflexivity, or even meme culture – but cinema just loves talking about itself. Movie theaters shower their carpets with images of film reels and popcorn. Film festivals bless each premiere with the buzz of anticipation. Auteurs – from Francois Truffaut to Charlie Kaufman, Guru Dutt to Sion Sono – have shown, time and time again, that filmmakers are just like writers. They shine at what they know best.

SXSW and Amazon are moving full steam ahead with a virtual festival that is set to launch April 27.
Officially titled Prime Video presents the SXSW 2020 Film Festival Collection.
The slate includes 39 films, composed of narrative and documentary features, short films, and episodic titles.
Filmmakers in the official 2020 SXSW Film Festival lineup were invited to opt in to take part in this online film festival, which is set to play exclusively on Prime Video in the U.S. from April 27 to May 6.
The one-time event will be available in front of the Prime Video paywall, free to all U.S. audiences with or without an Amazon Prime membership — all that is needed is a free Amazon account.
“SXSW has always championed creators forging their own paths to success, often with just the right mix of passion, vision, and radical experimentation to make their dreams happen,” said Janet Pierson, Director of Film at SXSW.

The 2020 SXSW Film Film Festival has set its virtual selection and screening dates on Amazon, garnering almost 40 shorts, features and episodic programs to participate in the digital workaround to coronavirus shutdowns.
The virtual festival will stream from April 27 through May 6, in front of the Amazon Prime paywall, meaning any user with an Amazon account can access the content.
“SXSW has always championed creators forging their own paths to success, often with just the right mix of passion, vision and radical experimentation to make their dreams happen,” said Janet Pierson, SXSW director of film. “There is no one-size-fits-all, especially in these uncertain times, and we knew this opportunity would be of interest to those filmmakers who wanted to be in front of a large audience now. ”

From Broadway in New York City to the Hollywood studios of Los Angeles, families are self-quarantining in an attempt to halt the spread of coronavirus. That means mommies and daddies all across America are looking to their television sets and the web for unique ways to keep their kids busy — especially the little ones who have no virtual school and a limited capacity to self-entertain.
Over here, the Maglios are getting desperate for ways to keep our 3-year-old daughter busy. All of this extra screen time has meant lots of Disney+, but how many “Doc McStuffins” episodes can one kid watch, and how often do we need to replay “The Little Mermaid”? (The realistic answer to both questions is “a lot.”)

There are people who like cats and then there are cat people. The crowd-funded, Brooklyn-set documentary “The Cat Rescuers” by Rob Fruchtman and Steven Lawrence deals with the latter category. It focuses on four cat lovers/animal rescue activists who help to save the lives of feral felines and to find new homes for abandoned pets. Those hoping for a domestic take on “Kedi,” the popular documentary about Istanbul street cats, should note that “The Cat Rescuers” concentrates solely on the stories of its human characters. After well-received screenings at the Hamptons and DocNYC festivals last year, the film is gradually rolling out to select venues nationwide through Balcony Releasing.
The directors posit that as many cats live on New York City’s streets as are kept in apartments and homes. That statistic means at least 500,000 abandoned and feral cats. Tens of thousands of them make Brooklyn their home. Since...

Michael Moore’s latest political documentary “Fahrenheit 11/9” (Briarcliff) opened to a little over $3 million this weekend in 1,719 theaters. That comes to about 200 people per theater, or roughly 350,000 ticket buyers. No one expected Moore’s latest effort to replicate the staggering performance of “Fahrenheit 9/11” (tickets sold estimated at over 19 million). Still, his documentary history suggested a wide opening should generate $5 million-$8 million.
Even in the best of scenarios, it’s hard to see this gross much more than $10 million domestic. Despite substantial media attention and a Toronto Film Festival premiere, it will likely end well behind “Won’t You Be My Neighbor,” “Rbg,” and “Three Identical Strangers.” Here’s why.
Michael Moore’s Films Have Declined in Appeal

Educational distributor Kanopy has struck a deal with Paramount Pictures, adding 100 classic films from the studio’s library to the on-demand streaming service. Twenty-five of those titles – including “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure,” “Harold and Maude,” “Sunset Boulevard,” and “Saturday Night Fever” — are available to stream now. The other 75 titles will be added in the coming weeks and months. (The full list is at the bottom of this article.)
Kanopy has been a pioneer in the educational market, first in its move away from physical media and toward a streaming app that is available on Roku, Chromecast, Apple TV, Amazon Fire Tablet, and iOS and Android devices. Last year, they also expanded beyond universities and institutions and started to aggressively strike deals with public libraries making Kanopy available to a far wider percentage of the population. When Amazon Studios won “The Big Sick” with a $12 million bid, it was no surprise: it came to the festival very aware of the film and what it could offer, and were ready to pay. Netflix plopped down $12.5 million on “Mudbound” just to lay claim to the festival’s biggest buy; no one else was in the running.
This year brings a different set of expectations. Top dog Fox Searchlight lost its $9.5 million investment in “Patti Cake$,” which barely scaled $1 million worldwide. Weinstein Co. and Broad Green are gone, and Amazon is under management duress, having lost leader Roy Price to a sex scandal. It will look for the right buys with an Oscar predigree — but may not be willing to take huge risks.
Of course, others are here to fill the gaps. These include Annapurna’s new distribution company, which has an exclusive output streaming deal with Hulu, as...

A year ago, it seemed like a great time for documentaries. “I Am Not Your Negro,” Raoul Peck’s eviscerating look at race in America, was a cultural touchstone, reaching over 300 theaters across the country and earning over $7.4 million at the box office. At Sundance, buyers paid big money for nonfiction films like “Long Strange Trip” (Amazon, $6 million), “Icarus” (Netflix, $5 million), and “Step” (Fox Searchlight, $4 million), among others.
And then, one by one, big-ticket docs failed to live up to box-office expectations. “Step” earned just over $1.1 million; Sundance Grand Jury Prize doc winner “Dina” grossed only $90,503 after seven weeks in release; Oscar-nominated filmmaker Matthew Heineman’s highly acclaimed Syrian activist doc, “City of Ghosts,” made only $128,015; while other highly topical and critically lauded films, such as “Whose Streets?,” “The Force,” “Trophy,” and “Risk” failed to draw a significant audience.
Theatrical ticket sales don’t tell the whole story; many docs find audiences on streaming services.

I've got a wonderful video here for you to watch from No Film School, which highlights the best cinematography that we've seen in film throughout the course of 2017. There were some seriously beautiful looking films this year. A couple of my favorites that were featured in this video supercut include Blade Runner 2049 and Dunkirk. The other films listed include Chasing Coral, Casting JonBenét, Kedi, Mudbound, Wonder Wheel, Good Time, The Florida Project, and Columbus. Some of the other best Cinematography from this past year includes Wonderstruck, The Shape of Water, Darkest Hour, War For The Planet of the Apes, Goodbye Christopher Robin, and more that weren't included in the video. Are there any other films that you think should be added to the list?...

With the year coming to an end, it's time to look back at the movies that defined the year in cinema. One of our favorite websites, No Film School, has put together a superb video to highlight & discuss their picks for the Best Cinematography of 2017. Not only is the video mesmerizing to watch with all of this lovely cinematography, but they completely nailed the selection - picking out, really, all the best cinematography, including from excellent documentaries like Chasing Coral (one of my favorites), Casting JonBenét, and Kedi. (The only big film missing, to me, is Call Me By Your Name...) Of course they feature Blade Runner 2049 (go, Roger Deakins, go!) and Dunkirk, along with Mudbound, Wonder Wheel, Good Time, The Florida Project, and Columbus. Yep, all the best films right there. This year end movie recap video is a must watch. Description direct from YouTube: "To compile...

At a time when the world is changing at an unquantifiable pace, when menacing world powers threaten everything we hold dear, we often look to the movies to bring the chaos into focus. In 2017, even the best escapism came with a dose of harsh truths about struggles facing civilization today, and the best movies went to places woefully ignored by the culture at large. When the mood of the moment is #resist and the future often looks more like a fake-news frenzy than the audacity of hope, the resilience of this art form is in sync with the zeitgeist.
