Although director Deepa Mehta has denied this claim, many Canadian viewers have noticed the similarities between the fictional Jeet Johar to Bindy Johal, the late real-life Indo-Canadian gangster.
Randeep Hooda's character was based on notorious IndoCanadian gangster Bindy Johal. Bindy Johal had a brother in law named Paul Gill. Paul Gill was also a known Indo Canadian gang member in Vancouver. Paul Gill became infamous for becoming romantically involved with a jury member (Gillian Guess) during his trial. The story became a headline sensation and later got made into a TV movie. Thr movies name was "The Love Crimes of Gillian Guess".
Randeep hopped on a flight to Vancouver, Canada on his own initiative to spend a few days with a real life gangster whom he shadowed for a couple of days in order to bring authenticity to his character of Jeet.
Actor Gulshan Grover wanted the role so badly that he hid a recent shoulder injury from the cast and crew until the end of the shoot. Dedication, Beeba style.
