Five years ago, when I started my research, almost nobody saw sugar as a problem. During this time I have been surprised again and again at how powerful sugar is and how destructive the effect of our overconsumption of this white sweet powder is on the human body. At first, I didn't have a clue about the strong connection between sugar and brain diseases (ADHD, Autism, Alzheimers), heart diseases, the epidemic of Metabolic syndrome and Diabetes type 2, and finally cancer. The film shows that connection.
But how could something that is in all of our food, an integral part of our society that we use to celebrate our birthdays, our weddings, our holidays, everything, be so dangerous? How can this be so toxic, how can this be hurting my children?
The strap line of our film is: One mother's fight against the global sugar mafia. Why? The more research and filming I did, the more I realised that sugar absolutely isn't only about health, it's about politics, about business, about serious money and power. I learned how the sugar business works. What the sugar mafia means and what the sugar bliss point is. Why all food products are becoming sweeter and sweeter with every generation and how sugar is in almost all even inconceivable items on shop shelves, and that includes Bio healthy shops.
I filmed in eight countries across three continents and it was a huge adventure. Everywhere offered something special, so I saw a lot of different faces of the problem and the film changed in style from a detective story to a scary thriller, and from an indepth investigation to a tragedy in Africa
The most significant sugar crime occurred in the 1970s and it still massively affects our society. If you want to know more about it, please come to the cinema.
