Stars: David Dastmalchian, Michael Ironside, Georgina Haig, Fayssal Bazzi, Ian Bliss, Rhys Auteri, Laura Gordon, Ingrid Torelli | Written and Directed by Cameron Cairnes, Colin Cairnes
Late Night With the Devil, the latest film from Cameron and Colin Cairnes, the team who made 100 Bloody Acres and Scare Campaign, opens with scenes of violence caught in the lens of the TV camera. As we watch, Michael Ironside tells us about America in the 1970s, and then segues into the career of radio man turned late night TV host Jack Delroy.
His show, the syndicated Night Owls, has run a close second to Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show, but never managed to catch up to it in the ratings wars. And since the death of Jack’s wife Madeline his life and his ratings, seem to be in free fall. With sweeps week kicking off on Halloween Eve and his career on the line,...

Almost certainly settling what’ll be the greatest animated feature to play theaters this year, Gkids will grant a new release to The End of Evangelion, Hideaki Anno’s feature-length continuation / rejigging / total destruction of his iconic anime. The history of this film is long, deep, and strange, nicely summarized in Eli Friedberg’s piece on the franchise: “a still-unparalleled feat of beautiful, nightmarish animation wherein Shinji’s momentary acceptance of suicide triggers a psychosexual Gnostic apocalypse somewhere between Childhood’s End and Cronenberg, scored to bitterly ironic J-pop and unlike any other spectacle ever put to cel.”
All that and more––an implication of the fanbase’s evil instincts among them––when Gkids hold nationwide screenings on March 17 and March 20, ahead of which is a brief, earth-shaking teaser. Friendly suggestion: if you’ve yet to take in Anno’s anime, prioritize it ahead of next month’s showings.

They made a legitimate claim to the classic rock throne in the 1970s, but Pink Floyd’s discography spanned decades. Many listeners misunderstood their biggest hit, and while the songs might be open to interpretation, the order of Pink Floyd’s albums is set and stone.
The five Pink Floyd members created 15 studio albums
Aside from a few early concerts, Pink Floyd only operated as a quartet. Still, the shadow of Syd Barrett loomed over the band for years, even after they moved on without him.
Barrett put Pink Floyd on the map as the singer, primary songwriter, and lead guitarist. He and bandmates Roger Waters (bass), Richard Wright (keyboards), and Nick Mason (drums) established themselves as the flagship band for psychedelic underground London in 1967. By the end of the year, Barrett was already on the path toward his post-Floyd life.

Pink Floyd had one of the most remarkable reinventions of any classic rock band. The psychedelic pioneers lost their creative leader when they parted ways with Syd Barrett in 1968. After searching for a way forward without him, they eventually found their path and became one of the biggest bands of the 1970s with the impactful The Dark Side of the Moon. That album was a cornerstone of their career, but several underrated Pink Floyd songs from the band’s catalog deserve recognition. (All songs presented in chronological order).
1. ‘The Nile Song’ Album: More
Pink Floyd’s first effort without any contribution from Barrett was their soundtrack to the 1969 movie More. Without their mercurial leader and with the freedom to create for someone else’s project instead of their own album, the band showed off a range of styles. “The Nile Song” proved to be the most unprecedented song on the tracklist.

Pink Floyd might have had one of the most dramatic transformations of any major classic rock band. Though drummer Nick Mason said the band’s groundbreaking early concerts were rubbish, Floyd became a psychedelic sensation. When the group moved on without founder and chief songwriter Syd Barrett, they emerged as a commercially successful prog rock powerhouse. But it didn’t happen overnight. One Pink Floyd song marked the breaking point between its psychedelic origins and legendary future.
The Pink Floyd song ‘Childhood’s End’ pointed toward ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ and beyond
Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page praised Barrett’s genius approach to music making. The innovation didn’t last. His erratic behavior led his bandmates to move on without him in 1968. Yet transforming into the prog-rock band that churned out commercially successful albums throughout the 1970s wasn’t seamless.
Pink Floyd held on to their psychedelic roots for several years after dismissing Barret.

In the old days, when dinosaurs roamed the earth and music was primarily heard through vinyl discs on a rotating machine with a needle, you’d go down to your local record shop and purchase an album. Then you’d go back home, slap the platter on your player and listen intently. More often than not, these albums would have a picture of the artist or group on the front, staring joyously or moodily back at you. These were the people making the sounds you heard. All very simple. Ask your grandparents about it.

Exclusive: Production has just concluded on Jeff Lipsky’s latest feature, Goldilocks and the Two Bears. This is the eighth film directed by the veteran indie executive and filmmaker, and the seventh he’s written.
Billed as a “sexy, dark saga,” it centers on three unique strangers who encounter one another in an unoccupied condominium, seven miles from the Las Vegas Strip. In the ensuing eight days they discover how much they actually have in common, and begin to wonder whether they might be each other’s salvation. By the shocking conclusion Ingrid, Ian and Ivy will prove to be a trio of unforgettable characters.
Newcomers Claire Milligan, Bryan Mittelstadt and Serra Naiman anchor the ensemble cast.
The entire feature was shot in and around Vegas. Lipsky recalls, “I filmed some of my first film, Childhood’s End, at the once-legendary Stardust so it’s a little bit like coming full circle for me.

Universal continues developing “2001: A Space Odyssey" author Arthur C. Clarke's "Childhood's End" as a live-action miniseries:
"Childhood's End", written in 1953 "...follows the peaceful alien invasion of Earth by the mysterious 'Overlords', whose arrival ends all war, helps to form a world government and turns the planet into a near-utopia.
"Many questions are asked about the origins and mission of the aliens."
"But they avoid answering, preferring to remain in their spacecraft, governing through indirect rule.

When Denis Villeneuve developed “Dune” he turned to Eric Roth to adapt Frank Herbert’s sprawling 1965 saga. Roth had already scored five Oscar nominations for adapting books for the screen, including one win for Robert Zemeckis’ Best Picture-winner “Forrest Gump.” Roth’s other Oscar adaptations include collaborations with directors David Fincher (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”), Michael Mann (“The Insider”), Bradley Cooper (“A Star is Born”), and Steven Spielberg (“Munich”).
Roth was not a sci-fi aficionado who adored the Herbert novel, but he saw what Villeneuve could do with it. In a wide-ranging Zoom conversation, Roth and I talked about the agony of being rewritten and his misreading of the power of Netflix when Fincher made his groundbreaking series “House of Cards.”
We also discussed his joyous collaboration with another septuagenarian, Martin Scorsese, turning David Grann’s 2017 non-fiction book “Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI,...

Skipped this one because it’s by Spielberg? The 9/11- inflected take on H.G. Wells’ classic reproduces thrills from the book not captured in George Pal’s 1953 atom-age update. For this reviewer it was a big surprise — a Tom Cruise movie in which he plays an appropriately terrified character instead of his annoying big star persona. Nervous audiences loved this in 2005… it actually generates some good scares. Seen on a good Ultra-hd setup, those scares translate well to home video.

From Battlestar Galactica to Star Trek, the cast and creatives behind Avenue 5 talk sci-fi influences.
With Armundo Iannucci's new series Avenue 5 blasting the British comedian's unique sense of humor into space, we thought it was a great time to ask the cast and creator what science fiction influenced them. During the recent press junket we sat down with the people behind the show and got an eclectic set of answers from classic sci-fi films to brilliant books and even some contemporary additions to the canon that have shaped the minds, careers, and lives of the cast and crew of Avenue 5.
Unsurprisingly, the man who created the show is a huge fan of the genre, and the fact that it was absolutely nothing like what he'd done before helped. "I've always been a sci-fi fan. Yeah, I love reading sci fi—Asimov and Hg Wells—but also...

More cast members have joined leads Jared Harris and Lee Pace on the Apple TV+ adaptation of Isaac Asimov's Foundation.
Well, they're trying to adapt Isaac Asimov's Foundation series for TV again. Foundation was headed for HBO back in 2014 with Jonathan Nolan at the helm, but that version vanished into space. But now David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight) and Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles) are tackling the extraordinarily dense and cerebral series for Skydance Television. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Marcy Ross, and Robyn Asimov will serve as executive producers.
Asimov's core three Foundation novels, Foundation, Foundation and Empire, and Second Foundation are all worth your time. There's a secondary group of sequels, too, but really, these are the big three you should be concerned with.
Any one of these books contains enough character and world building to fill multiple seasons of TV, so hopefully,...

We chat to screenwriter Matthew Graham about Syfy miniseries Childhood's End, Us TV and why he's not doing any more Doctor Who...
Matthew Graham was the co-creator and co-executive producer of hit shows Life On Mars and Ashes To Ashes, and he’s just brought Childhood’s End to the screen in the Us.
Here's the second of two interviews we've done with Matthew. The first took us behind the scenes on the development of the seemingly abandoned live-action Star Wars TV show he was hand-picked by George Lucas to work on, while this one looks at Childhood's End, as well as what he's up to now...
How have you found Syfy? They’ve gone through a big transition in recent years, and really seem to be behind science fiction television again.

Matthew Graham was the co-creator and co-executive producer of hit shows Life On Mars and Ashes To Ashes, and he’s just brought Childhood’s End to the screen in the Us. But off the back of the success of Life On Mars, he was picked by George Lucas to be one of the chosen few to work on the seemingly-abandoned live action Star Wars television show. And whilst he couldn’t share story details from the show – it’s all owned by Disney now – he was able to take us behind the scenes.
Here, then, is the first of two interviews we've done with Matthew. The second, coming to the site shortly, will look at his recent Syfy TV show, Childhood's End, as well as what he's up to now.

It seems that every few years somebody announces science fiction is dead. In 2007 it was the turn of Ridley Scott, who then went on to make The Martian, so perhaps these claims should always be taken with a pinch of salt, particularly when we look back over the history of Sf writing over the years and find that it is a genre that is as much defined by current events than by any singular vision of the future.
For that reason, British science fiction in the 1950s was incredible stuff. Anxiety over the powers scientists had unleashed after the dropping the atomic bomb at the end of World War II obsessed many novelists, but so did a sense of despondency at poverty and suffering within a community...

Writer Matthew Graham, having grown up a fan of science fiction, fell in love with Arthur C. Clarke's classic novel "Childhood's End" when he was 14 years old, but it took more than a few years before he found himself in a position to adapt it for the screen. That opportunity came courtesy of Syfy, which this week brought the novel to life in an epic three-part miniseries. With a cast including Mike Vogel and Charles Dance as Kalellen, who represents the Overlord aliens who have brought a new level of prosperity to the planet Earth (while failing to mention that utopia has its own sort of consequences), "Childhood's End" represented for Syfy a major recommitment to science fiction. They descend from the skies, these huge motherships hovering over the big cities and major metropolitan hot spots of our planet. The aliens piloting these massive UFOs — call them Overlords — initially prefer to remain unseen; eventually, a representative named Karellen will make his presence known. They promise to help humanity achieve a new step in our evolution. Only their platitudes of peace and intergalactic prosperity doesn't jibe with something we've seen earlier: A flash-forward of a lone figure sitting on a couch in the middle of a desolate wasteland, remembering...

There wasn't a lot Mike Vogel, Daisy Betts and Yael Stone could say about "Childhood's End" at the TCA Summer Press Tour, spoiler-wise, but thanks to the source material the ambitious Syfy miniseries is based on, there was still plenty to discuss. Even if you're not a fan of classic sci-fi, you might be a little bit familiar with Arthur C. Clarke's novel, if only because it's known as the book that even Stanley Kubrick couldn't figure out how to adapt as a film. The story tracks a major turning point for humanity after the arrival of an alien presence, featuring a wide cast of characters and an epic scope. Extraterrestrials have been visiting our planet for decades. Whether it's "Twilight Zone" aliens inviting us onto their ship for a meal or big black monoliths helping ape-men evolve in "2001," visitors from beyond the stars have always struck humankind with an uneasy cocktail of rapturous wonder and absolute dread. What most of these science-fiction tales can agree on is that aliens may be scary, but nice aliens are even scarier. Read More: Into 'The Expanse': What Syfy's New Sci-Fi Gamble Learned From 'True Detective' "Childhood's End" is in this vein: A three-night miniseries based off the 1953 novel of the same name by Arthur C. Clarke, the original book is a seminal work in science-fiction and has left a highly visible mark on the genre. Which may be why the story is, at first, familiar. Titanic alien spacecraft appear over Earth's major cities, drawn to national capitals like moths to a flame.
