The team investigate the murder of a PI
Tweekums16 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
The UCOS team's latest case involves the murder of a private investigator. The case has been reopened after an anonymous person sent the dead man's note book to the police. The book details two of his cases; a man who ran off with thousands of pounds of his girlfriend's money and the theft from a man who is dying of cancer. It is the latter case that gives the episode its title; one of the items stolen is an incredibly rare Russian stamp known as 'The Russian Cousin'. This leads the team to the world of stamp dealing as they try to find the thief by identifying people he might have approached. It is assumed that the killer will be the target of one of the man's investigations but as the story progresses other possibilities arise. Away from the case Steve is hoping to make some money by letting his house to tourists visiting London; it doesn't start well when the two 'Italian' girls who rent it for the weekend turn out to be somewhat disreputable.

This episode proved to be a step up from the previous somewhat weak episode. The main case was interesting and provided a decent number of suspects. When the killer was finally revealed it was neither too obvious nor too unlikely. The regular cast did a solid job and guest star Dean Andrews did a particularly good job as Warnock, the dying man whose stamp was stolen. The side story involving Steve's house letting was amusing enough; I'm sure everybody will have guessed that the two 'Italians' were up to no good but exactly what they were doing to do wasn't quite so obvious. Overall this was a pretty good episode with a good mystery and some humorous moments.

Another o.k. episode

Nope, Roger the Dodger wasn't finally killed, this is a totally different one. Stamp collecting gets some attention this time, with legal and illegal trades going on. Vaguely similar setting to Objects of Desire, but the story plays out very differently.

This story is...fine. Has some twists, but for whatever reason just didn't catch me as much as others. Steve has some fun renting out his apartment on NotAirBnB, or maybe NotCraigslist.

Stamps and murder

Have always been a big fan of detective/mystery shows from a fairly young age, well since starting secondary school.

'Inspector Morse', 'A Touch of Frost', 'Midsomer Murders' (in its prime), 'Law and Order', 'Inspector George Gently', 'Criminal Minds', 'Murder She Wrote', you name them to name a few. 'New Tricks' has also been a favourite from the start (despite not being the same without the original cast in recent years). Although it can be corny at times (in an endearing sort of way) it has always been perfect for helping me relax in the evenings. Something that was needed during all the hard times endured in school.

While still not one of the best 'New Tricks' episodes, "The Russian Cousin" is among the better ones for Season 12. Wasn't bowled over by it, but it was very good on the whole.

Although not as interesting as any member of the original team, Ted is more settled and Larry Lamb plays him well. The team dynamic charms and amuses and feels more natural. Still think it doesn't sparkle anywhere as much as the original team dynamic and doesn't have its freshness.

The case very interesting and twisty, that avoids being too confusing while suitably challenging. The ending is surprising in the who and why factors, helped by that there are a sizeable number of suspects, if slightly on the rushed side. The two "Italians" stuff is quite predictable.

Moreover, there are some very funny lines and Steve's side story is handled well and doesn't distract.

Visually, "The Russian Cousin" is slick and stylish as ever. The music is a good fit and the theme song (sung with gusto by none other by Dennis Waterman himself) is one of the catchiest for any detective/mystery show and of any show in the past fifteen years or so.

Good performances from the whole cast.

Overall, very good episode and one of the better ones of Season 12. 8/10 Bethany Cox

Alright, just lacking any real sparkle.

The team investigate the death of a security guard, who was killed back in 2011, they also hunt for a missing stamp worth over £40k, the owner, a cancer survivor, had no idea of the value of his family heirloom.

I know you shouldn't compare episodes, but I watched this very recently after watching series one, and in comparison, it's just nowhere near the same quality, no issue with the acting or production, it's just lacking any real sparkle.

It's starting to feel like the approaching end of the show was the right thing, it had started to lose its way.

On the plus side, the story of Steve renting his flat out was quite amusing, and gave us something a little different. Ted's story, somehow just didn't matter.

A good supporting cast, with a strong performance from Dean Andrews, his character really did stand out from the crowd.

Sarah Crowden is always good value, with a career of zany ladies, here she plays a quirky dealer.

6/10.
