These comments cover both parts of this two-part story As the final series of 'New Tricks' gets underway a body is found in a house that is being redeveloped. It turns out that it is the remains of DCI Martin Ackroyd, Gerry's former boss, who disappeared in the '80s. There was a lot of corruption back then with many policemen working for a local criminal including many in Ackroyd's unit although Gerry insists that he was clean. As UCOS begins their investigation it looks as though Gerry is holding some details from them and evidence at the scene suggests he may even have been involved in the murder
either that or somebody set him up as a potential fall guy all this years ago.
By the midway point in the story there is so much evidence against Gerry that he is arrested but not yet charged. He is released and starts his own unofficial investigation, joined by Danny who was 'feeling a little sick'. Their investigation starts to uncover the truth but that just puts Gerry in danger as the real killers want to protect themselves.
This episode was a real return to form which served to give character Gerry Standing a good send off. The case was interesting and at times it looked as Gerry may have been less than clean in his younger days when things were rather murkier. Dennis Waterman has done a fine job as Gerry for over a decade and his character will certainly be missed; he is after all the last of the original team. As well as an interesting case there are moments of excitement, some good dark humour I loved Danny intimidating suspects with a 'torture kit' that included a pair of secateurs which ends with him calmly stating 'They call me the gardener'! The ending, which I won't spoil, comes quite a shock but does contain a twist. Overall a really good episode; I'll be interested to see how the series copes without Gerry though.
