It was true in the early '90s and it remains true now: Mario is the king of video games. To this day, there's arguably no mascot more recognizable for an industry worth billions and, by the end of the '80s, Hollywood was starting to realize this whole video game thing was here to stay. Naturally, that meant capitalizing on the popularity with a major motion picture. It also meant that Nintendo's "Super Mario Bros." was the white whale of IP that any studio could hope to get their hands on. In 1993, the result of producer Roland Joffe's unlikely bid to win those rights hit theaters and set the tone for video game movies for years to come --...

Five years after it first hit SoundCloud, Shamir’s album Hope has been reissued on vinyl for a deluxe version via Kill Rock Stars, featuring the never-before-heard songs “Breathe” and “Camouflage.”
Hope was the follow-up to Shamir’s debut album, 2015’s Ratchet, and came about in a miraculous way. Stunned by the attention and acclaim Ratchet garnered, but taken aback by the pressures of fame and the process of commodification, Shamir almost quit music entirely. But a single weekend recording session brought him back from the edge, and resulted in the creation of Hope.
“Hope came at a time in my life when I was desperately searching for it,” Shamir explained in a statement. “I found myself not wanting to do music anymore after a rough introduction into the music industry. I didn’t feel seen or heard as the artist I was, or at least wanted to be, and...

The Beatles started life as a glorified coves band, albeit a solid one. Their debut album, Please Please Me, contained precious few originals, but that method didn’t last long. Once the Fab Four began writing their own material, they changed their sound and the pop music landscape along with it. Some of the Beatles’ experimental songs retained their pop sensibilities while displaying how creative a short tune could be.

What seemed like a straightforward three-minute pop song B-side was really one of the most experimental Beatles songs.
First, you had Ringo Starr’s drumming. It hardly settled into a groove at any point in the song; his playing was closer to being one long fill. Ringo said ‘Rain’ is a weird track because he never played drums like that before or after.

Popular strategy board game Terra Mystica is set for a screen adaptation by Cobalt Knight, the production company co-founded by Christopher Kaminski and Christopher Knox.
Cobalt Knight nabbed the screen adaptation rights to the Terra Mystica universe, which includes a sequel, Gaia Project. Both board game titles were designed by Jens Drögemüller and Helge Ostertag and published by Capstone Games.
Cobalt Knight has signed with Rain Management Group for representation as it looks to adapt the empire-building board games. “When we were introduced to Cobalt Knight, I was in awe of their innovative approach of taking board games and other traditional titles into the film and television space,” Rain founding partner Jonathan Baruch said in a statement.

This article contains minor spoilers for The Suicide Squad. We have a spoiler free review here.
Surprise! The Suicide Squad has a soundtrack for the ages. Ok, look, it’s a James Gunn movie. You are not surprised.
But nevertheless, even by Gunn’s eclectic standards, The Suicide Squad soundtrack is just banger after banger. It’s more diverse than the ’70s Am radio-friendly (and Walkman-appropriate grooves) of his Guardians of the Galaxy “Awesome Mix” soundtracks, but serves the story just as well. Don’t forget, Gunn is known for writing the songs he hopes to use directly into his scripts.
During a chat with James Gunn, I asked him what the first two songs he knew he wanted to use in The Suicide Squad were. To be perfectly honest, I expected the answer to be The Jim Carroll Band’s classic “People Who Died” but Gunn surprised me with not one,...

Not only is Mj Rodriguez finally getting the recognition she deserves for her role as Blanca Evangelista on Pose - after years of Emmy Awards snubs - but her recent lead actress nomination is also a historic one. On July 13, Rodriguez became the first transgender woman in the history of the ceremony to be recognized in a lead acting category. With her nomination, she became the third openly transgender person to be nominated for an acting Emmy, joining Laverne Cox, who was the first transgender person to be nominated with a nomination for outstanding guest actress in a comedy series for her work on 2014's Orange Is the New Black, and Rain Valdez, who earned a nomination for outstanding actress in a short-form comedy or drama series for 2020's Razor Tongue. Pose earned a total of eight nominations for the 2021 award ceremony, including outstanding drama series and lead actor for Billy Porter.

As a Netflix VP and head of international original series, Erik Barmack shaped today’s fiction TV business. Now working out of his own label, L.A.-based Wild Sheep Content, which holds down a strategic label with The Mediapro Studio, Barmack has placed some 12 series with streaming platforms. Given that, why is the doyen of international series now driving into movie production?

Although his last feature “Zegen” was not quite the success production company Toei had hoped for, they, nevertheless, wanted to continue their collaboration with renowned director Shohei Imamura and gave him the opportunity to tell a story he had been thinking about for quite some time. Based on Masuji Ibuse’s novel of the same name, the project “Black Rain” was set in Japan in the aftermath of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It is a work which cinephiles, critics and film scholars alike often regard as an exception to Imamura’s work in the 1980s, as it bears more similarities to the features he directed in the 1960s given its radical imagery, tone and themes. At the same time, “Black Rain” follows Imamura’s concept of the period piece as a tale set in the past but which has a striking significance for the present, and even for the future,...

High roller casinos are defined as those that allow players to make larger than usual bets. There is no specific definition of what constitutes a high roller, although typically casinos would class those that wager around £100 or more per hand as high rollers. There are various perks offered to high rollers by casinos to tempt them to return. People who regularly bet large sums of money in one particular casino can expect to receive a number of perks, which might include free luxury accommodation, transport to the casino by private jet and complimentary food and drink throughout the stay.
The higher the amounts being gambled, the better the perks are likely to be. People love to watch high rollers play – the thrill of watching someone risking thousands of dollars on a single have of cards cannot be beaten. Mortal Kombat 11‘s gigantic roster is due to expand even further in the near future, it would seem.
Following the release of several Dlc characters last year, developer NetherRealm seemingly tied up all remaining loose ends for the title back in April with Aftermath. The expansion, which added a handful of additional fighters, including Fujin, Sheeva and 80s movie icon RoboCop, also marked a first for the series by introducing all-new story content – an extended epilogue, of sorts, taking place directly after Kronika’s defeat in the base campaign.
Had director Ed Boon and his team decided to close shop, so to speak, and pursue other projects following the delivery of Aftermath, it’s unlikely any fans would have batted an eyelid, but it now looks as if the studio still has more love to give MK11 before considering its work to be done. Written by Wilborn, Generals Row revolves around a trailblazing female general who joins the military’s most exclusive club – the Joint Chiefs of Staff – and moves her family into a neighborhood rife with cutthroat politics, blind ambition, and where daily battles over duty, honor, and tradition are every bit as tough as those waged inside the Pentagon.

One of the most interesting sections of Cannes Film Festival each year is their Classics section, which is made up of new restorations and filmmaking-related documentaries. Bob Mould has has released a seething new song, “Forecast of Rain,” set to appear on his upcoming album, Blue Hearts, out September 25th via Merge Records.
The track is another expertly crafted bit of alt-rock that finds Mould delivering a sharp critique of religious institutions that seem to have shelved some of the ostensible tenets of their belief system to support President Donald Trump. Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande made a surprise appearance on The Weather Channel’s “Amhq” forecast this morning (May 27) to report that it is, indeed, raining.
The pop singers, who released their collaborative single “Rain on Me” on Friday (May 22), joined meteorologists Jim Cantore, Stephanie Abrams and Jen Carfagno to promote their new single with a hilarious video. In the clip, Gaga and Grande stand under umbrellas while not-so-natural “rain” falls on them.
Says Gaga at the top of the clip: “Today, it is pouring rain. We are soaking wet. And while some are complaining of the recent downpour, we would like to celebrate the rain.”
Delivering a forecast dripping in sarcasm fits perfectly with the central theme of “Rain on Me” — appreciating life and living it to the fullest, even through its darkest moments.

On “Healing,” a new single from U.K. singer Arlissa, orchestral strings introduce waves of pop production and R&b vocal stylings that crash together, resulting in an invigorating anthem. An unpretentious guitar part adds a human touch, and the programmed snaps feel like fresh rain on dry skin. “I thought I needed someone I could run to, but I needed healing,” Arlissa belts. Inadvertently or not, she’s reminding people to take a break and reconnect with their souls.

Two films released, another film shot, and Steven Soderbergh managed to still watch and read a decent amount in 2019. (Note to self: barely using his Twitter account probably helps.) So a favorite tradition continues with today’s release of his annual viewing and reading log on Extension 765, which has a surprise, oddity, or some-such at nearly every turn.
Favorites include: making it through all 181 hours of Nicolas Winding Refn’s Too Old to Die Young in seven days but taking nearly four months to finish Sergei Bondarchuk’s War and Peace; Chinatown and Richard Lester movies appearing on yet another list; he, too, watching Fleabag; seeing a version of his next movie, Let Them All Talk, just under a month after principal photography commenced. And so on and so forth.

Antonio Banderas has introduced Spain to “A Chorus Line.” A Spanish language adaptation of the classic American musical about struggling actors auditioning for a chorus line on Broadway was the opening production last month of the actor’s new Teatro del Soho CaixaBank in his native Málaga. It also marks the first production of “A Chorus Line” to be staged in Spain.
“There is something about me as an actor that many people don’t know, and is that I am an actor because of theater. Not because of movies,” Banderas says on this week’s “The Big Ticket,” Variety and iHeart’s movie podcast.
“Movies became an enormous accident in my career, an accident of over 112 movies, but the thing that I fell in love with in my profession is the theater, seeing actors on the stage, a group of people just telling stories to another group of people,...

Manora's Fantastic TaleA fluffy stick figure in Don Hertzfeldt’s introduction for The Animation Show (2003) plaintively asks, “What’s Animation?”—and what follows in this brilliant short is a staging of the magic and power of animation, its contrarian tendencies towards cuteness and violence, and its delightful defiance of accepted (realist) categories and definitions. While it may seem a bit obvious to ask this question, the problem of “what’s animation” continues to resonate deeply in contemporary film culture. This has been especially true this year with a controversial pick for the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard section, Lorenzo Mattotti’s The Bears Famous Invasion of Sicily. Was it too perverse, too demented, or too shoddy to be shown in the festival? No, it seemed too “childish,” provoking some critics to ask how it could be relevant for adults or appropriate for a “serious” film festival. Such rigorous...
