Thoughtfully empty to put the visual focus on the things even if it hasn't too much beyond the concept
Homing is a documentary in the sense that it is not a work of fiction. Part of the New Zealand documentary shorts series called Loading Docs, this film starts in a garden and in one shot moves through the various homes in the empty house. As it goes we do not see anyone (apart from one reflection of the cameraman unfortunately) but we do hear the sounds of life. It is an interesting thing as a visual poem, although it doesn't have a huge amount to say if you are not in the mood to be thoughtful on your own.
Personally I liked it because of how still it all was visually. The camera movement didn't seem to be a steadicam (but what do I know?) as it seemed a little more jittery than it needed to be, but the flow of the movement was still pretty smooth and fluid when you think of the spaces and surfaces the operator was moving across. The comment on a reflection is a minor thing, but it is a shame since it sort of broke the spell to see a person in the frame, albeit by accident. Otherwise though the sound of life around the home is nicely laid over; not so loud that it makes us forget that the rooms are empty but enough to make us reflect on their presence within these places. It has a good tone to it and I liked it for what it did although I would have liked more beyond the idea itself, since really it does the same thing for 3 minutes and doesn't have aspects or points that stand out as different. Worth seeing as a piece, but you probably will not come back to it for multiple viewings.
