- "Nashville" - "I Feel Sorry For Me" - Oct. 15. 2014
Rayna and Sadie go for a ride, Teddy and Jeff go golfing, Zoey goes ballistic, Deacon and the back up singer go toe to toe, and Juliette and Avery go nowhere, slowly and painfully.
First up is Rayna, who has set her sights on signing Sadie Stone to Highway 65. She gets Bucky to rearrange her schedule so she can take a meeting with her.
Said meeting takes place at the Ryman, where Sadie is rehearsing for a gig. Rayna gives her the hard sell about why she should sign with her and not eeeeevil Jeff Fordham. Sadie is scarcely listening because she can't believe she's talking to Rayna at all. When Rayna has to go for her wedding dress fitting she asks Sadie to come along. The dress is beautiful but the paparazzi outside are not. So since she can't get to her own car, she and Sadie slip out the back into Sadie's red Mustang and lead the paparazzi on a wild chase that lands them on the front page.
But even after all of Rayna's talk and their wild ride, Glenn tells Rayna that Sadie is going to Edgehill. So Rayna goes for a hail mary, showing up at Sadie's gig and trying to impress upon her that all Jeff is trying to do is please shareholders who know the label has an image problem with women and that once she's signed Jeff won't support her. She tells her to ask Layla Grant, the label's lone female signee, just how it's going. Sadie says she wants to be Rayna and that Edgehill can make that happen for her. Rayna reminds her that she actually made Edgehill not the other way around and notes how different the business is for women now and plays the girl power card, saying they are in this fight together for the good of all female artists and Rayna doesn't want Sadie to copy her but be her own original self and she, Rayna Jaymes will make that happen. Sadie heads out onstage, where Teddy and the girls are in the audience and Jeff is in the wings, and announces that not only has she signed to Highway 65 but Rayna is here to celebrate and they sing the sassy song that was playing on the radio during their wild ride, "Gasoline and Matches."
Meanwhile, while Rayna was giving Sadie the hard sell, Jeff was doing the same to Teddy. After showing up out of the blue at a fundraiser at Daphne and Maddie's school and donating $25,000 to build a recording studio, Jeff bid on and won a round of golf with the mayor. Once on the links he talks about wanting to do that at every school. Teddy says Jeff must have a serious image problem if that's his play. Jeff says he does he also notes that he was an amateur musician during his undergrad days but he didn't have the talent to make it so he went to business school instead. He really wants, he claims, to get back to the music. They play golf and Teddy seems sold on his ideas for the school system. Jeff invites him and the girls-- whom he saw play at the school fundraiser-- to the Sadie Stone show to celebrate their new partnership. He says he's signing her.
Of course, when he shows up, Sadie drops the bombshell onstage and he is furious. He confronts Rayna after the show. She reminds him that he's a thief-- he stole Will Lexington-- and a whore-- she knows about Juliette-- and basically gloats that she won. He basically says this now means war. As Rayna leaves and embraces the girls and greets Teddy he calls his execs and says he wants to look into the legality of signing a kid act-- Daphne and Maddie-- with only one parent's consent.
Deacon sneaks out of the back up singer's room while she is in the shower. She runs into him at a tour AA meeting where he is sharing. After he apologizes for sneaking out on her and he reiterates he's in love with someone else and he's sorry for bringing her into his angst. She says it was fun and wonders if he remembers what that is. She is going full press on the "cool girl' thing.
Later, after the show, when he sees her doing shots with the band he is angry she came into the meeting. She says she didn't realize what it was until she walked in. He says those meetings are sacred. She apologizes for making a bad Triple A/AA joke but says he rejected her this morning and that sucked and she wanted to hurt him back a little bit and says she should've targeted his endless supply of denim shirts.
Later she shows up on his bus, she rides a different one on the tour, and he wonders if she's stalking him. She says she was invited over to play poker. She and the other band members ask him to sit in and he passes.
Later still, he is working on a song when she comes back and insinuates herself into it, forcing it to be a duet. It's a brokenhearted love song and she chimes in as a female voice saying it's time to stop being so forlorn and go fishing for the others in the sea. (It's supposed to be charming and an epiphany for his song but it just feels really rude). He is clearly jazzed by it and writes down the lyrics they improvised. She excuses herself for bed.
The next day at a truck stop they are clearly feeling each other and all flirty-- she says she's going back on her bus, he tells her to get on his bus-- and end up getting it on in what looks like a laundry room at the truck stop. (So, yeah, um gross.) In doing so, and each other, they miss their bus. So they buy a motorcycle for sale at the truck stop and take off down the road.
That night at a diner, they chat and he says he always wanted a motorcycle but Rayna didn't think a drunk and a Harley went well together. Back up singer thinks the bike suits him. They get the call from the tour manager to get back on the bus and he doesn't want them to miss it twice in one day. Deacon says they'll catch up with them.
Zoey is losing her damn mind. About to head out on tour with Juliette and she is convinced that Scarlett and Gunnar are up to something behind her back. It turns out they are, it's just not what she thinks it is. She confronts Scarlett at the Bluebird-- about them singing together, the road trip, the recent phone calls (she snooped in his phone)-- who says nothing is going on and can't believe that Zoey would think she would do that to her. Zoey asks why Gunnar begged her to come back to Nashville. Scarlett asks Zoey why she didn't. Zoey stalks off, only to return to... the surprise going away party that Gunnar and Scarlett planned for her. D'oh! Outside Zoey apologizes, basically for being insecure and awful. Scarlett notes it seems like they've been apologizing to each other for over a year now. Zoey says she isn't herself in Nashville. Scarlett says she knows what she means. Zoey wants to chalk it all up to growing pains. Scarlett wonders if they are growing apart or together. Back inside Zoey thanks everyone for the party and pays tribute to her best friend who she remembers singing with as a little girl. She asks Scarlett to come up onstage and sing with her and Scarlett freezes as the crowd cheers for her. She runs to the store room. A confused Zoey asks what happened. She says this is the Bluebird and these are their friends. Scarlett says everything isn't about Zoey. She reassures them that they are okay as friends but asks her never to do that again. They are called out by yelling and glass smashing.
Out in the Bluebird, Avery is sloppily losing his damn mind in the middle of the party. He yells at Gunnar and accuses him of trying to play the saint. He yells at Zoey for reminding him that she will be going on tour with Juliette and that she'll be kissing her ass for two months. And he yells at Scarlett and says it's all her fault because if she hadn't been so needy then Juliette wouldn't have gotten jealous of her. Gunnar manages to get his keys away from him and he stumbles out. He is woken up by the police when he is discovered passed out in a stranger's car.
Juliette finally comes clean with Glenn and Emily that she is pregnant. She doesn't want to hear their opinions about it. She is going to give the baby up for adoption. Because the movie shoot is only six weeks long and working around her tour schedule and her tour is only a few weeks after that she thinks she can get away with no one noticing if she says she has bulked up to play Patsy, who was heavier than she is. Glenn and Emily obviously want to talk to her but Juliette isn't having it. She simply wants Emily to assist and Glenn to find her a discreet adoption agency. After the film and tour wrap she'll disappear, maybe into the recording studio, give up the baby and that's that.
But later, while looking at potential adoptive parents, Juliette starts to bleed and cramp and worries that she is miscarrying. She freaks out and calls Rayna who accompanies her to the doctor where an ultrasound proves that everything is a-okay. The baby has a strong heartbeat and she experienced normal cramping and spotting. Juliette tells Rayna she wants to give the baby up because she's not sure she knows how to love someone without screwing it up and she wants the child to have a good life. Rayna says she's already thinking like a mother. Later, Juliette goes to Glenn and finally lets her guard down and tearfully tells him she's scared. He says he knows and he hugs her. (He's also not wearing his toupeee and it's kind of awesome.)
Glenn goes to Avery-- before Zoey's Bluebird party-- and beseeches him to talk to Juliette. Avery says that Glenn knows better than anyone what Juliette is like. Glenn agrees but says she is like his kid and someday Avery will know that you never give up on your kid. Avery is unmoved.
Later, however, he is moved, by the cops into a jail cell. The only number he has memorized is Juliette's so he calls her to bail him out. She tries again to apologize but he doesn't want to hear it saying he feels like a jerk for not forgiving her. He says he both loves and hates her and fervently wishes that he could feel nothing at all. He reminds her that she once told him that he had the power to destroy her but he says it is she who destroys things and he wishes he never met her and stumbles off. Juliette cries.
