Last week Rayna made a decision, Scarlett came home, Avery got drunk, Layla was sad, and Juliette got preggers.
This week:
Rayna is riding high at number one but everything is about to start coming down.
First up is a journalist who ignores her tour of her exciting new office space and instead wants the scoop on her engagement to Luke. Rayna says she doesn't share personal info period. But the requests keep coming and -- as Bucky and Tandy explain to her-- it's a whole new world of social media and the record business has changed and if she wants to stay on top she needs to share more and work harder, especially when she finds out that her stay at number one was short-lived: she got bumped to number two by Will Lexington.
To those ends she decides to extend her tour for a full year. She asks the girls about it and although they are sad, Maddie is especially aggrieved, they give her their begrudging blessing. So that's the work front. On the personal front, when she goes on "Good Morning America"-- and is surprised by Luke Bryan-- and is pressed about Luke Wheeler, she shares that when he whispered in her ear that night he was talking about his trick knee and she didn't realize what he meant until he got down on one knee she said "It felt like it was a dream I didn't even know I had coming true."
Personally speaking, she and Tandy go to Lamar's to start collecting things before the estate sale. Rayna complaining about Lamar says she just wants their mother's portrait and some of her jewelry. Tandy who, obivously, had a different relationship with him asks if she's sure.
Later, when going through things Rayna tries to explain the challenges of growing up with a father like Lamar to Luke who only sees the fancy house since he grew up poor. Rayna points out he was rich in love while she was poverty stricken in that sense. But when she goes in and Lamar's dressing room and sees that he has a copy of her first gold album on the wall, she has an epiphany. She inherited her ambition and competitive spirit from him and decides to be at peace with that. Than Tandy drops the bomb that, tired of being defined as Lamar Wyatt's daughter and Rayna Jaymes' sister, she's moving to San Francisco for a new job and to find her own way saying that the music business is Rayna's love and that she wants to do work she loves too. Rayna is sad but understands.
Meanwhile, Deacon is glad Scarlett came back but sad Rayna turned him down. He assumes that he will now be off Luke's tour but when he goes to collect his guitars Luke says a contract is a contract and Deacon is still his opening act.
This throws a wrench into his plans to spend more time with Maddie. After a disastrous bout of attitude from her while trying to shop for a dresser to keep at his place she finally blurts out that she wishes he was marrying Rayna. He, perhaps ill-advisedly, admits he proposed and Rayna turned him down. This makes her sadder but at least disspates some of her anger at him. But the anger returns when he informs her that he will be touring after all and seeing her less. She storms out complaining that everyone is leaving her.
Gunnar asks Zoey to move in, especially since she's going on tour and it's silly to play rent. But she's unsure. But after she has a disastrous rehearsal and then sees Gunnar and Scarlett vibing once again after they write a song together she says yes. Scarlett, for her part, is scared that she clearly felt something while she and Gunnar were writing. When he offers her a co-writing credit she freaks out and turns him down and says she can't be part of this. She later returns and apologizes and says she needs to figure things out on her own.
Juliette is freaking out about her callback for Patsy, going so far as to dress the part with costume and wig. It goes so well that the producers basically say she's a lock for the part and ask if there are any obstacles to shooting on her end that they should know about. She assures them there are not and decides to end the pregnancy. As she's leaving the audition, Jeff and Layla arrive and he takes a shot at Juliette saying she must really be method since she packed on a few pounds for the part. She goes to drop off Avery's stuff at his house, it makes her sad looking at it at hers, and they get in another fight. She again tries to apologize and he is again not having it. When she goes to get the abortion the doctor explains how far along she is and she realizes that the baby isn't Jeff's but Avery's. Right about that time, Avery is impulsively locking lips with a new waitress at the Bluebird.
In the continuing adventures of "The Gay Cowboy and His Naive Wife" Layla is struggling with putting on a fake grin for the cameras and is constantly in tears, especially when she is asked by producers to go to Will's rehearsal and announce that he hit number one, bumping Rayna. He tries to apologize again and even goes to Jeff to try and boost her career. He feels like he's got some leverage now that he's number one. So he forces Jeff Fordham to get her an audition for the Patsy movie. But at the audition he runs into another, older recording artist who he's a big fan of, and tries to woo her to Edgehill right in in front of Layla.
Jeff also has problems of his own as the corporate overlord embarrasses him at a board meeting saying he both has a woman problem and a bottom line problem and basically threatens to fire him and close the label if he doesn't right the ship.
Layla finally wises up and realizes that she has Will over a barrel basically. She tells him that she hates him, doesn't forgive him, and is essentially going to blackmail him into doing whatever she wants or she will out him. Gulp!
