In the first of his FrightFest interview series, host Stuart Wright talks to actor-turned-director Dominic Brunt about his latest film Attack of the Adult Babies, which has its world premiere at the festival on Saturday 26th August.
From Dominic Brunt, director of Before Dawn and Bait, a satirical and sexy shocker unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. A home invasion forces two teenagers to break into a remote country manor and steal Top Secret documents. Little do they know the stately pile is also the venue where a group of high-powered middle-aged men go to take refuge from the stresses of daily life by dressing in nappies and indulging their every perverse nursery whim. Or that this grotesque assembly intends to refuel the world’s economy by very sinister, sick and monstrous means. Time for a change…

Adult Babies gets an exclusive reveal at Horror Channel FrightFest Glasgow 2017, in anticipation of the event, actress / producer Joanne Mitchell – star of Before Dawn and Bait; and creator of Adult Babies – answers 10 scary questions…
When did your fascination for horror films begin?
I’ve been interested in horror since being a young kid. I liked to be frightened, whether it be reading a scary book, or watching one of the Hammer House of Horrors. But it wasn’t until my 30’s that I really became fascinated with the whole genre after making ‘Before Dawn’ and watching back to back movies at FrightFest!! The fans are so loyal and open minded and really know their stuff.
What was the first horror film you saw?
I’m pretty sure it was ‘The Thing’. If I remember rightly my brother and his mates had managed to get a copy and I snuck in!

★☆☆☆☆ Of all its numerous misdemeanours, the most heinous that Dominic Brunt's vile Bait (2014) commits is its attempt to convince you that it isn't the grim, misogynistic horror that it ultimately turns out to be. Its two female protagonists, Bex (Victoria Smurfit) and Dawn (Joanne Mitchell), begin the film as feisty, independently-minded individuals, running their own market stall selling organic tea and cakes and attempting to secure a loan to expand into a shop. They're well-drawn and smartly acted at first, with realistic lives and realistic aspirations that don't involve men and it initially feels refreshing to see a home-grown genre flick that seems rooted in the lives of women.
Sadly, the idea that they might be resourceful and capable enough to handle whatever a horror film might throw at them soon dissipates when they meet Jeremy (Jonathan Slinger), a sneering loan shark who begins extorting them, threatening them with...

A woman in her bra covered in blood? Tick. But director Dominic Brunt’s vicious thriller is more convincing than you’d expect, with characters of genuine depth
This impressively vicious thriller directed by Dominic Brunt (who played Paddy Kirk in Emmerdale for years) looks at first like straight-up exploitation nonsense with its opening shots of a bra-clad Joanne Mitchell covered in blood screaming in a bathroom as Victoria Smurfit (also gore-smeared and in her undies) climbs the stairs with a knife. But as the narrative rolls back to show how we got to this place, Bait reveals itself to be smarter and subtler than the usual genre workout. The two women, it turns out, are best friends who run a cake stall in a market and get suckered into making a deal with Jonathan Slinger’s exquisitely evil loan shark. You know he has to be vile early on...

A tense female revenge saga and frightening true-life crime thriller graced by a scalpel-sharp screenplay and extraordinary performances. Two women who dream of opening their own café in a work-depressed northern town go to the wrong person for a loan in this chilling allegory of the economic brutality independent businesses face within the austerity-led banking system. Unable to meet the outrageous payment demands, the hardened duo must find it within themselves to take pitiless, bloody retribution on their malicious aggressor.
