Sonia Kronlund’s engaging documentary focuses on the indomitable Salim Shaheen, who has made more than 100 films in war-torn Afghanistan
The show must go on, and movies must get made, and this holds true even or especially in troubled war zones. Film-maker Sonia Kronlund has made this funny and affectionate documentary portrait of veteran Afghan movie mogul Salim Shaheen: actor, producer, director and creator of more than 100 features. He is the prince of an industry he calls “Nothingwood” – a Hollywood that must make do with nothing at all.
The indomitable and bulky Shaheen, perennially giving his cast and public observers rousing pep talks and calling for a round of applause, resembles Diego Maradona. He admires the Bollywood style and the Bollywood work ethic and his work resembles those films, with a strong dash of the cheap’n’cheerful action shlock produced by Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus at Cannon Films in the 80s.

Jeffrey Tambor isn’t giving up on Transparent without a fight — or so it seems, according to a new report from The New York Times.
In the wake of multiple sexual harassment allegations, Tambor on Nov. 19 issued a statement criticizing the “politicalized atmosphere” on the set of the Amazon dramedy, saying, “I don’t see how I can return to Transparent” and signaling his own departure. Now, a representative for the actor tells the Times that Tambor has “no plans to quit,” leaving the series in a state of limbo as the streamer’s investigation into multiple harassment claims marches on.

David Robilliard was a poet and painter who lived from 1952 to 1988.
Eating Out You're like a potato. You'd go with anything.
"David Robilliard was the sweetest, kindest, most infuriating, artistic foul-mouthed, witty, charming, handsome, thoughtful, unhappy, loving and friendly person we ever met.
Over the nine years of our friendship David came closer to us than any other person. He will live forever in our hearts and minds." Gilbert and George wrote the above on July 7, 1990. "Starting with pockets filled with disorganised writings and sketches, he went on to produce highly original poetry, drawings and paintings. His truthfulness, sadness desperation and love of people gave his work a brilliance and beauty that stands out a mile."

It’s a wonder movie from the 1930s, a political fantasy that imagines a Utopia of peace and kindness hidden away in a distant mountain range — or in our daydreams. Sony’s new restoration is indeed impressive. Ronald Colman is seduced by a vision of a non-sectarian Heaven on Earth, while Savant indulges his anti-Frank Capra grumblings in his admiring but hesitant review essay.

The star of new comedy Quacks had his big break in 1981, but spent the period in ‘sheer panic’ watching friends die. He talks about fear, flops and coming back from the wilderness years
In one way, Quacks is a natural place to find Rupert Everett. The keenly British comedy has “something of the Carry On, Stanley Baxter era” about it, he says – a sharp, playful script; a generous, gracious ensemble cast also featuring Rory Kinnear and Mathew Baynton; very accurate historical detail, such as Everett’s thunderous physician trying to cure what sounds like cystitis with the topical application of a baked potato. Really, what could be more fitting? Who else would you cast?
Yet the legacy of his first, dazzling appearance into British culture, the stage and then film version of Another Country, means that if you were alive and at all conscious in the early 1980s, you can...

We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, we’re lobbing queries left and right about shows including Twin Peaks, Preacher, Casual and Arrow!
But first, some Qs coming out of San Diego Comic-Con:
1 | Does anyone not think that that Morgan saying “I don’t die” in The Walking Dead’s trailer dooms him?
2 | Kansas performing “Carry on Wayward Son” in Hall H: Peak Supernatural moment? Like, how do they even come close to topping that next year?
3 | Who would you award Miss/Mister Congeniality, of the many who passed through TVLine’s video suite?...

Drama surrounding the Winchester boys’ mom will be at the center of the upcoming Season 13 for “Supernatural.” The stars and producers of the long-running CW drama gathered for a San Diego Comic-Con panel on Saturday, which kicked off with the rock band Kansas performing a live version of “Carry on Wayward Son,” the show’s unofficial theme song. Co-showrunner Bob Singer teased the outcome of the Season 12 finale, which left Mary Winchester (Samantha Smith) trapped in a rift with Lucifer. Singer told the crowd that Mary is definitely not dead… but conflict arises between her sons, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean.

Starting with a clip of show stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles — as themselves — headed down to Comic-Con’s Hall H. Image Source: Getty / Christopher Polk Beyoncé has become a force to be reckoned with since strutting her way into the music scene back in 1997 with Destiny's Child. The Lemonade diva has more than earned her title as "Queen Bey" over the last two decades, but one thing that seems to keep some people up at night (yes, really!) is whether or not you pronounce her royal highness's name as "Queen Bee" or "Queen Bay." If you're part of the Beyhive, then you should already know the answer, so feel free to use this for future reference when someone dares to mispronounce the queen's title, but allow us finally put this - admittedly silly - debate to rest. The correct pronunciation of "Queen Bey" is Queen Bee. Like queen of the bees. Like the bees you embarrassingly run from in the Summer. Like bees who are unfortunately dying at an alarming rate.

Can lovely, innocent Blind Date really exist in the same tawdry world as Take Me Out?
Blind Date is coming back this weekend. So much has changed since the 1980s, both on TV and in society itself, that what returns to our screens may not be a straight-forward, fully-intact teleport of the format, but rather a mutant mish-mash: a half-fly Jeff Goldblum of a show just begging to be put out of its misery. The truth of this inevitable transformation can be seen in the steps already taken up the light-entertainment evolutionary ladder, most notably in the DNA of ITV's long-running post-Blind Date offering, Take Me Out.

Starting its Season 12 Knockout Rounds Monday, The Voice threw a curveball at its contestants, allowing the pairs who’d be competing with one another to keep their spots to watch each other rehearse. Mind you, I’m not sure how big a curveball that really was since they’d all certainly gotten to see what their opponent-of-the-week was up to/capable of during the Battle Rounds. And could it possibly have been any more awkward than sitting on stage and idly observing as your rival sang their ass off in hopes of sending you packing? Anyway, the twist did manage to rattle a coupla vocalists.

Seven decades after independence, Indian cinema is still struggling to depict the Raj, leaving its screen depictions – from Gandhi to colonial racism – to be viewed almost solely through British eyes
In 1968, 20 years after Indian independence and partition, producer-director duo Peter Rogers and Gerald Thomas released Carry On Up the Khyber in British cinemas. It was a raunchy, imperialistic romp, set against the backdrop of the Raj – the British colonial rule in India that lasted till 1947.
Looking back, the Carry On humour hasn’t dated well. Not only is the sexist slap-and-tickle at odds with modern sensibilities but the film is awash with casual racism. Bernard Bresslaw and Kenneth Williams “brown-up” to play the not-so-hilariously named Bungdit Din and the Khasi of Khalabar, while Sidney James yak-yak-yaks away with his lustful eyes fixed on buxom Brits dressed in saris.

Penélope Cruz rescues this frequently silly comedy, set on a 1950s film set in Franco’s Spain, as a larger-than-life actor in an entertaining, at times exasperating story
There’s a kind of excitable silliness in this disposable, film-within-a-film comedy from Fernando Trueba, starring Penélope Cruz – to whom Trueba gave her big break in his 1992 film Belle Epoque. In fact, it’s maybe the nearest thing that this year’s Berlin film festival has to a Carry On. There are one or two groans and finger-drumming moments of impatience, due to its sentimentality, perverse nostalgia and knowingly retro sexual politics. But it also has a kind of puppyish excitability, one or two laughs, and a lovely song, when Cruz sings Granada on a movie set. In fact, Cruz saves the film. The cinephilia and movie-studio fetishism are picturesque, though Almodóvar has given us the same thing with more intensity and feeling.

Round The Horne is touring around the UK. We went. We laughed. A lot.
New Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham
2017 sees another run of the Round The Horne 50th anniversary tour by the Apollo Theatre Company, where the classic Radio 4 show is brought to life by a brilliantly authentic cast of voice actors.
If you've never heard Round The Horne, you're missing a staple of British comedy. The show ran from 1965-1968, and pushed the boundaries of acceptable humour with its blend of double entendres, camp comedy and general silliness.
The staple cast included Kenneth Horne, Betty Marsden, Hugh Paddick, Kenneth Williams, and announcer Douglas Smith. Smith's involvement is made funnier in contrast to his other well known role as a Radio 4 announcer. The original show featured musical accompaniment by Edwin Braden and the Hornblowers, and later The Max Harris Group. For the anniversary show, musical and sound effect...

Like any film with an extended period of time between the original and sequel(s), T2: Trainspotting (2017) is required to form an immediate connection with its audience. Twenty years have passed, yet we must feel accustomed to this world. For every element of change, something else must remain the same. We take comfort in what we know; it allows us to enjoy the new without fear of the unknown. If T2 had been released a couple of years after Trainspotting (1996), it could potentially have been set in Benidorm. Transplanting our anti-heroes from Scotland to Spain is fine when they are fresh in our conscious mind, but twenty years later we need a way back. In T2 this is achieved by location (still in Leith, Edinburgh), music and costume. Not much has changed in this respect, and what has we probably expected to.

As we’ve learned over the last few years, licensing is a constant issue in the digital age of gaming. Music masters Harmonix certainly know this, as countless tracks have been pulled from the Rock Band Marketplace due to expired rights. This has been particularly unfortunate for those who came into the franchise with Rock Band Rivals, but the Boston-based studio has now come up with a solution.
With 2017 marking the 10 year anniversary of the franchise, Harmonix will be bringing back classic tracks throughout the year. Beginning this month, wanna-be rock stars will be able to grab three songs that previously appeared in past Rock Band titles. Coming from three different, but equally excellent, games, the returning tunes are:

In Jovian Wade, Dee Kartier and Percelle Ascott’s scampish feature debut, three London friends foolishly spend £100,000 of accidentally gotten gains
If Adam Deacon’s Anuvahood was the Carry On of Brit urban comedy, then perhaps The Weekend is the On the Buses: likable, freewheeling, a bit ropey. Jovian Wade, Dee Kartier and Percelle Ascott have already shown tag-team charisma on their Mandem on the Wall YouTube channel and E4’s Youngers, and they easily carry it over to their feature debut as a trio of London friends who accidentally lay their hands on £100,000 of gangster readies and foolishly decide to spend it. As well as scampishly running rings around the grim fatalism of Noel Clarke’s ’hood trilogy, The Weekend atypically makes Wade’s lead a nice middle-class boy. Directed by fellow debutant Sheridan De Myers, the caper takes too long to get going and is thinly sustained...
