I am writing this on the first episode for you guys to know what your getting in to. It will contain spoilers!!
Here goes - Ryan Phillippe (Ben Crawford) is tremendous in this but also stupid! His character is literally doing stupid stuff on the daily which doesn't help his case. Detective Cornell is a vicious no rubbish taking kinda woman. You literally hate her to start with and just want her to look elsewhere for another suspect. But she is adamant. She reveals big secrets like truth bombs then sees how people react brilliant acting on her behalf well done Juliette Lewis. The ending makes me so mad. I look at it and think wtf why would you do that.
Anyways starts off with a family married Ben to Christy school sweethearts they have two young daughters 16 and 12 I believe. It started off with Ben on his normal morning run and he finds a 4 year old boy whom is his neighbours son called Tom. He runs back and calls the police desperately. Straight away Cornell is on his back like a dog on heat. She doesn't leave him alone. She believes he killed Tom. He goes in to every questioning without any hesitations he wants to help. He explains he tried to give the boy CPR etc but realised he was dead due to the blood at the back of his head. Then we meet Dave - Bens best friend from college he lives in their summer pool house in the garden. You also notice at this point bens been sleeping on the sofa we find out why later on. Ben tries to reach out to Toms mum seen as he found her son. But the cops stop him. You also find out tom spent a lot of time at the crawfords being taken care of by his eldest child. He also used to take tom fishing etc. Toms father was away in Iraq. A solider. However Cornell asks for bens DNA to eliminate him from the scene his lawyer advises against it. So he doesn't provide it straight away. He ends up getting a criminal lawyer who was extremely expensive Ben explained he can't afford him he said someone paid $25000 cashiers cheque (this was later on) Ben finds out his wife has been stashing money away her rich brother has been giving her. A little nest egg she says however Ben questions her as to whether it is to leave him and take his girls. We find out Tom is actually Bens kid he had no idea and neither did Toms mum. This is where you find out why he was on the sofa. The night Tom died Ben and Christy had a blazing row as she asked him if he is cheating on her he said no as he wasn't she then said toms mums name and he said it was 6 years ago and it was once. Cornell drops the DNA bomb on Ben but he keeps it to himself it's the day of the funeral every neighbour apart from toms mum and some English couple think Ben did it. He is constantly surrounded by reporters and hounding his house day and night. Cornell says sorry your DNA results got leaked you best be prepared as this happens his eldest daughter and wife are watching breaking news he was the father. He tries to explain his daughter storms off. His wife said you said you only slept with her once he said I did we didn't know and she said you didn't know and she didn't he said nope. He slowly goes from calling him Tom to referencing him as his son. He tells his youngest girl Tom was not just a friend he was your brother she was upset but she is always interested in people Talking and she is always listening. That's key here she is also always saying have they found toms killer yet. Nope Abby they haven't. Anyways it drags for abit where Ben suspects his whole neighbourhood because he knows he didn't do it well actually he can't remember as he was drugged by his friend Dave that night. Then we find out the night 6 years ago when he slept with toms mum Jess was because his wife Christy had taken a decision to abort her pregnancy without really consulting Ben. He was so upset and angry and they found out it would have been a boy. She and him argued so she took the girls to her brothers beach house for the weekend and he stayed home trying to be calm and ended up having sex with Jess. Anyways the night of toms murder he was flaunting a scan picture about saying my son my son so Cornell thought he knew about Tom but she got told the truth and she also realised the killer was a woman by the way Tom was eventually due to be killed the killer had dragged Tom towards the river so that he would be drowned she said this is a woman and they do forensic tests and realise something. However due to Ben finding the murder weapon in his car (his torch) he freaked and cleaned it and got rid. He thinks someone is framing him. He goes to the British neighbours the lady is over emotional he asks her why she explains she lost her son too. He then saw pics of a young boy covered in bruises and welfare checks to say he had been taken away. So he automatically thinks the worst he finds out the doc and his wife fled from England due to firstly their son dying (he had a problem with his blood clotting so while in foster care he was beaten and he died internal bleeding not them) however the doc was accused of sexual conduct. What was it?? Ben needed to know and since every customer he had (he owned a painting a decorating firm) had cancelled since he was suspect number 1 since day one. He had one customer who called him mid investigation he led Ben to believe he was a lawyer of some kind anyways when he said can I use your channels of research to the man he told him why he found out the man was a reporter!! He also found out the British couple were half brother and sister that's why he was dismissed due to sexual conduct. Anyways after this the ran. Ben knew he didn't do anything as when he was finally told he was drugged he realised for 100% he didn't harm Tom. A few other things happen his neighbour goes secret operative on his arse as he was a special ops guy so he tried to torture Ben to confess but he managed to get away and the cops arrived he and his wife finally realised they can't be together anymore. So she goes to her brothers and tried to stop him seeing his girls but her brother for the first time has sympathy and allows him to have the girls. But he just takes Abby to the fireworks he also ends up taking Jess to the fireworks as her car doesn't work. She thought her ex husband had killed tom the entire first few episodes but Ben did digging and they found out he didn't kill tom he was infact sleeping with Jess's sister. And he was AWOL from the military. He threatened Ben saying he was my son regardless Ben saw him and said if it makes any difference I know he was your son. Anyways back to firework night it's a fair and Abby's not happy Jess is there and gets jealous and breaks her new phone her mum bought for her. What we don't see is Cornell is there watching the entire thing. Ben found the leak in the crime lab due to her going to the reporters house he was decorating for and when he saw her doing a sweep for forensics he called her name and Cornell was seething as she had to retest all evidence however this is when she realised murderer was a woman and under 5ft tall.
Yeah you are right it's ABBY!! But the DA said we have no evidence we can't arrest her the crawfords don't know but just as they are about to be civil for new year Ben finds Abby's bloody trainers under the house when he puts his ladder away. He brings them in and confronts her everyone is aghast. Abby said she and Tom planned to run away and hide so his daddy would come back and find him and then they could be happy families again. She said he got upset and wanted to go home and said he was going to tell on her so she hit him with the torch and she said she tried to drag him but she couldn't so she left to find dad and she said he had already gone for his run. Ben gets upset and so does Christy they start to blame themselves while the eldest is like come on we have to tell the truth it's unfair to Lie you taught me to take responsibilities for my actions so come on. They are like but Abby's a baby. She can't go to prison so Ben rushes Christy and Abby to pack and puts them in the car the eldest said I can't be apart of this so they don't force her and Ben takes her to Christie's brothers house. Ben then goes into the police station and says I killed Tom. We know he didn't Andrea Cornell knows it and his best mate and daughter knows it. They all know Abby did it. He stands unwaivering saying he did it. Cornell asked him how many times did you strike Tom he said once she said no you struck him 6 times and hard. He was taken back but said who knows as he is being processed Andrea Cornell is furious and the DA said it's slam dunk he is confessing she said he is covering for his little girl but he said you can't prove that because of the compromise in the lab. As Ben is going off she said look Ben your not helping Abby here this murder was premeditated and she has a bad streak I was there that night of the fireworks when she saw you and Jess get close she threw her phone in tantrum not by accident and she hit that boy so hard etc. He said after thinking I did it. So he takes the blame his daughter is a mini psycho. She killed his son. She is in the car with her mum and she said says Jess should have just moved away like she was meant too when Tom died or something like that and that's when Christy realises Her daughter killed poor tom on purpose. It ends. Honestly so annoyed so had to come on here and share. Good luck with it. On season 2 now let's hope it's a better ending for the viewer. As that little Girl is a psycho and let her dad take the fall at every turn she injected her self into the investigation constantly asking if they caught his killer etc but still a Great programme and great acting overall!!
