- Quotes
Alice Harvey: So this person painted over the work of a well-known artist?
Doctor Lucien Blake: Yes.
Alice Harvey: Why would they do that?
Doctor Lucien Blake: Why indeed? I can tell you, however, that the culprit was my mother.
Alice Harvey: Perhaps she did it to try and annoy someone.
Doctor Lucien Blake: Are you suggesting that's a family trait?
Alice Harvey: I didn't say anything.

Revealing More About the Eponymous Doctor's Past
For some viewers, who perhaps have not yet seen the first series of THE DOCTOR BLAKE MYSTERIES, the past of the eponymous hero (Craig McLachlan) might seem somewhat obscure. We know that he was involved in World War II, that he has a family; but there are other aspects that seem to transform him into a melancholy figure that seem to be veiled. This episode serves to tell us more: we learn that his mother was an artist of little repute, but her legacy is so affecting that Blake keeps her old studio just as it is when she died - and moreover keeps the door locked as well.
McLachlan gives a convincing characterization of someone trying his best to go about his business, but haunted by the ghosts of the past. Not perhaps the most expressive of actors, he nonetheless uses his eyes to register different emotions - a sideways look here, a slight look of concern there, an open-mouthed look of wonder and/or concern on other occasions. Director Declan Eames has a fine sense of what it must be like to be regarded as a pillar of the community - even though Lawson (Joel Tobeck) doesn't always get on with the doctor - yet have skeletons lurking in the cupboard. Blake tries his best to conceal them, but sometimes - as in this episode - they keep coming back to haunt him.
