Now available on Blu-ray and DVD from Anchor Bay Entertainment is Lost After Dark, a 1980s-set horror film that pays homage to that decade's slasher heyday while also instilling its own scares onscreen. For our latest Q&A feature, we caught up with Lost After Dark director/co-writer Ian Kessner, who discussed ’80s influences, a funny Robert Patrick anecdote, and his in-the-works remake of 1988's Waxwork.
Thanks for taking the time to converse with us today, Ian. Lost After Dark is a blood-splattered homage to ’80s horror films. What movies, TV shows, or other pop culture memories from that decade influenced your approach to Lost After Dark?
Ian Kessner: My pleasure, big fan of Daily Dead. The film that influenced my approach the most was the original Friday the 13th, but Halloween, Happy Birthday to Me and a bunch of others all found their way in there. I also...

Ian Kessner’s Lost After Dark isn’t content to homage the 80s subgenre many hold dear, its planting its feet in the decade as well. Set in ’84, the slasher sees a set of high schoolers encounter an urban legend. Will they survive? Probably not. Anchor Bay has announced a September 1st Blu-ray and DVD release…

In true 80’s nostalgia fashion, I’ve been hyped about seeing this film since I’ve seen the poster. Yes, a poster sold me on the movie – just the way I grew up watching movies in the late 80’s & 90’s. Anchor Bay just announced the release date for the 80’s slasher homage, Lost After Dark.
If you thought the 80s were dead — think again! On September 1st, Anchor Bay Entertainment goes full 80s retro with Lost After Dark, a loving but harrowing homage that takes audiences back to the decade when slashers ruled the silver screen. The exciting directing debut of writer/director Ian Kessner, Lost After Dark proudly features visceral, old-school prosthetic “kills,” and pop songs pulsing to an electronic beat. So thrown on a pair of acid wash jeans and go full-on tubular with Lost After Dark! Srp is $26.99 for the Blu-ray™ and $22.98 for the DVD, with pre-book on July 31st.

Cowritten by director Kessner and Bo Ransdell Lost After Dark eschews the Scream meta approach in its lovingly clever homage to the 1980s slasher film as it follows a group of teenagers out to party when the school bus theyve stolen breaks down. In true 80s form it isnt long before the randy adolescents discover a creepy farm house as well as the owner of it a cannibal killer known as Junior Joad. Kessners approach to this material is pitchperfect and he clearly knows the subgenre. Delivering familiar slasher tropes in the forms of a virgin (presented as the final girl) a slut a badboy a jock a nerd et al. as well as in narrative Lost After Darks retro approach...

The indie film scene continues to embrace the '80s with the latest horror film entry Lost After Dark. I say that because it appears, lately, we've been getting word on a variety of indie projects that claim to embrace the fun of '80s horror. This film, directed by Ian Kessner and featuring Robert Patrick, is actually set in the '80s (1984 to be precise) and we've got a look at the sales poster and trailer, courtesy of Raven Banner Entertainment. The sales outfit is looking for distribution at Cannes. I dig that Alone in the Dark-inspired poster.
